Influence of the presence of surfactants and humic acid in waters on the indophenol-type reaction method for ammonium determination.
2005
Abstract This work has evaluated the influence of humic acid and/or surfactants in the quantification of ammonium in waters with the indophenol-type reaction method. Thymol has been employed with the colorimetric method for sample ammonium concentrations between 0.25 and 1 mg L −1 . In addition, SPE/diffuse reflectance method has been used for quantification of ammonium at low concentrations (between 0.025 and 0.25 mg L −1 ). Matrix effect owing to humic substances were observed with the colorimetric method when the concentration was equal or higher than 25 mg L −1 . Lower concentrations of humic compounds produced matrix effects with the more sensitive SPE/diffuse reflectance method. Gener…
Comparison of extraction methods for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon determination in sediments
1990
Different sample preparation methods for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in lake and river sediments were compared and evaluated. Freeze‐dried sediment materials were e...
Characterization of commercial synthetic resins by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry: application to modern art and conservation.
2009
To characterize a set of synthetic resins, a methodology by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) has been developed. The studied reference materials were commercial versions of a wide range of synthetic resins. For each polymer, the pyrolytic and chromatographic conditions were optimized to adequately resolve the fragment mixture in a short time. The proposed analytical method does not require previous treatment of the sample, and due to its high sensitivity, only a small sample quantity in the microgram range can be used. The pyrolysis temperature was found to have little effect on the obtained pyrograms. The summarized data set for the individual polymer materials, es…
A slow process in confined polymer melts: layer exchange dynamics at a polymer solid interface
2010
Employing Molecular Dynamics simulations of a chemically realistic model of 1,4-polybutadiene between graphite walls we show that the mass exchange between layers close to the walls is a slow process already in the melt state. For the glass transition of confined polymers this process competes with the slowing down due to packing effects and intramolecular rotation barriers.
Surface anchoring on liquid crystalline polymer brushes
2002
We present a Monte Carlo study of the surface anchoring of a nematic fluid on swollen layers of grafted liquid crystalline chain molecules. The liquid crystalline particles are modeled by soft repulsive ellipsoids, and the chains are made of the same particles. An appropriately modified version of the configurational bias Monte Carlo algorithm is introduced, which removes and redistributes chain bonds rather than whole monomers. With this algorithm, a wide range of grafting densities could be studied. The substrate is chosen such that it favors a planar orientation (parallel to the surface). Depending on the grafting density, we find three anchoring regimes: planar, tilted, and perpendicula…
Dynamics of confined polymer melts: Recent Monte Carlo simulation results
2000
The dynamic behavior of thin polymer films is studied by Monte Carlo simulations of a simplified lattice model. The film geometry is realized by two opposite hard walls whose distance is varied in the simulations. In the films the dynamics is accelerated with respect to the bulk, leading to a decrease of the extrapolated glass transition temperature with decreasing film thickness.
Polymer solutions confined in slit-like pores with attractive walls: An off-lattice Monte Carlo study of static properties and chain dynamics
1996
Using a bead spring model of flexible polymer chains, the density profiles and chain configurational properties of polymer solutions confined between parallel plates were studied. A wide range of density ϕ, chain length N, and strength e of a short-range attractive wall potential was investigated. Both a temperature T in the good solvent regime (T > θ, θ being the Theta temperature where a chain in unconfined bulk three-dimensional solution would behave ideally) and a temperature in the bad solvent regime (T θ) show a crossover from two-dimensional excluded volume behavior (Rg ∝ N2ν with ν = 3/4) to ideal random walk behavior (ν = 1/2), the relaxation times show effective exponents Zeff (τ …
Theoretical study of the OH addition to the β-pinene
2004
The initial step of the mechanism of the OH + β-pinene gas-phase reaction was investigated by means of ab initio calculations. Four different possibilities for the OH addition to the double bond are discussed, corresponding to the addition on each C atom of the double bond, and for each one, either the syn or anti OH attack to the two methyl groups on the (bi)cyclic molecule. Energy barriers calculated at the QCISD(T)/6-31G(d) level of theory on UMP2/6-31G(d) optimised structures, show that there are preferred orientations for the OH addition under atmospheric conditions of temperature and pressure.
Bonding in the heavy analogue of hydrogen cyanide: the curious case of bridged HPSi.
2010
The bonding of firstand second-row elements differ dramatically. The simplest unsaturated silicon hydrides Si2H2 and Si2H4 exhibit quite unusual geometries [1] compared to the analogous hydrocarbon molecules. For example, the most stable form of Si2H2 is nonplanar with C2v symmetry and two bridging H atoms, in sharp contrast to linear acetylene, HC! CH. Phosphorus and nitrogen share many of the same bonding characteristics, but P prefers single over multiple bonds. For these reasons, it may be difficult to predict the most stable isomeric arrangement, even for a small molecule with a single Por Si atom and especially when it contains both. Silicon–phosphorus bonds are important in materials…
1,2-Dipolar addition model for the cytoprotective activity of selected α,β-unsaturated compounds with CO functionality: an ab initio study
2001
Abstract The mechanism of the addition of a nucleophile (an alkylthiol group) to a double bond of α,β-unsaturated systems in the gas phase was explored. In this study, intermediates of the reaction were also investigated using ab initio calculations (RHF/6-31G ∗ and MP2/6-31+G ∗ ). Our results indicate that direct dipolar attack of the S–H group of an alkylthiol on the CC double bond is a reasonable reaction path. The present results represent, therefore, additional support for our hypothesis. This suggests that the mechanism of cytoprotection might be mediated, at least in part, by a reaction between the olefinic acceptor and the sulfhydryl-containing groups of the mucosa.
