Structural and optical properties of TiO2–Al2O3nanolaminates produced by atomic layer deposition

2015

Structural and optical properties of Al2O3/TiO2 nanolaminates fabricated by atomic layer deposition (ALD) were investigated. We performed Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-Ray reflectivity (XRR), UV-Vis spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy to characterize the Al2O3/TiO2 nanolaminates. The main structural and optical parameters of Al2O3/TiO2 nanolaminates were calculated. It was established that with decreasing of the layer thickness, the value of band gap energy increases due to the quantum size effect related to the reduction of the nanograins size. It was also shown that there is an interdiffusion layer at the Al2O3/TiO2 interface which plays a…

Structural and chemical characterization of CdSe-ZnS core-shell quantum dots

2018

Abstract The structural and compositional properties of CdSe-ZnS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) with a sub-nm shell thickness are analyzed at the atomic scale using electron microscopy. QDs with both wurtzite and zinc blende crystal structures, as well as intermixing of the two structures and stacking faults, are observed. High-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy suggests the presence of a lower atomic number epitaxial shell of irregular thickness around a CdSe core. The presence of a shell is confirmed using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Despite the thickness irregularities, the optical properties of the particles, such as photoluminescence and quantum…

Synthesis and photoluminescence properties of hybrid 1D core–shell structured nanocomposites based on ZnO/polydopamine

2020

In the present work, we report on the modelling of processes at the zinc oxide and polydopamine (ZnO/ PDA) interface. The PDA layer was deposited onto ZnO nanorods (NRs) via chemical bath deposition. The defect concentrations in ZnO before and after PDA deposition were calculated and analysed. The ZnONRs/PDA core–shell nanostructures were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) measurements, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The TEM and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) measurements confirmed the conformal coating of PDA, while the PL emission from ZnO and ZnONRs/P…

The evolution of the fraction of Er ions sensitized by Si nanostructures in silicon-rich silicon oxide thin films

2009

Photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL experiments as a function of the elaboration process are performed on Er-doped silicon-rich silicon oxide (SRO:Er) thin films grown under NH(3) atmosphere. These PL measurements of the Er(3+) emission at 1.54 microm under non-resonant pumping with the Er f-f transitions are obtained for different Er(3+) concentrations, ranging from 0.05 to 1.4 at.%, and various post-growth annealing temperatures of the layers. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and energy-filtered TEM (EFTEM) analysis show a high density of Si nanostructures composed of amorphous and crystalline nanoclusters varying from 2.7 x 10(18) to 10(18) cm(-3) as a fun…

Optical characterization of Mg-doped GaN films grown by metalorganic chemical vapor phase deposition

2000

Scanning electron microscopy, micro-Raman, and photoluminescence (PL) measurements are reported for Mg-doped GaN films grown on (0001) sapphire substrates by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor phase deposition. The surface morphology, structural, and optical properties of GaN samples with Mg concentrations ranging from 1019 to 1021 cm−3 have been studied. In the scanning micrographs large triangular pyramids are observed, probably due to stacking fault formation and three-dimensional growth. The density and size of these structures increase with the amount of magnesium incorporated in the samples. In the photoluminescence spectra, intense lines were found at 3.36 and 3.31 eV on the tr…

Impact of kinetics on the growth of GaN on graphene by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy.

2019

International audience; The growth of GaN on graphene by molecular beam epitaxy was investigated. The most stable epitaxial relationship, i.e. [00.1]-oriented grains, is obtained at high temperature and N-rich conditions, which match those for nanowire growth. Alternatively, at moderate temperature and Ga-rich conditions, several metastable orientations are observed at the nucleation stage, which evolve preferentially towards [00.1]-oriented grains. The dependence of the nucleation regime on growth conditions was assigned to Ga adatom kinetics. This statement is consistent with the calculated graphene/GaN in-plane lattice coincidence and supported by a combination of transmission electron m…

Efficient Cementing of CH3NH3PbBr3Nanoparticles to Upconversion Nanoparticles Visualized by Confocal Microscopy

2016

Upconversion-perovskite nanohybrids are prepared by assembling CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite nanoparticles (PK) with naked NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+ nanoparticles (UCn) via an innovative strategy consisting of using cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) to anchor the perovskite nanoparticles firmly and closely to the upconversion nanoparticles, thus leading to UCn@PKCB nanohybrids. A commercial multiphoton laser scanning confocal microscope is used to demonstrate the successful assembly. This technique proves to be useful to evaluate luminescence lifetime in the range of several tens of μs and allows visualization of the extraordinarily efficient nontrivial resonance energy transfer from the upconversion nanoparticle to …

Characterisation of structured thin films made from complex materials by photoabsorption spectromicroscopy

1998

Al3 and YBa2Cu3O7/PrBa2Cu3O7. To investigate devices built from these complex materials we applied element-sensitive photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM). Information about the chemical composition of the imaged sample can be obtained by PEEM via tuning the photon energy to X-ray absorption edges. To apply spectromicroscopy we acquired microscopic images using photon energies near and at the edges. Such images give the lateral distribution of a specific element. Microspectroscopy is performed by recording the intensity of the true secondary electrons in selected spots during a sweep of the photon energy. The main aim of our work was to observe oxygen-related defects and changes in the c…

Infrared to visible upconversion luminescence properties in the system Ln2BaZnO5 (Ln=La, Gd)

2009

Abstract We have investigated the upconversion properties of the rare-earth doped systems La 2 BaZnO 5 ( I 4/ mcm ) and Gd 2 BaZnO 5 ( Pbnm ). The dependence of the luminescence properties on the identity and the concentration of the dopants, Er 3+ and Er 3+ co-doped with Yb 3+ , as well as on the synthetic route, was examined. Following coherent excitation at 975 nm, strong upconversion emission was observed in the visible region (525, 550 and 660 nm). Power dependence studies revealed a two photon process for these emissions. In the co-doped samples, a blue emission (410 nm) could also be observed. For this emission, the power dependence studies confirmed a three photon process.
