Bone mineral content (BMC/W) and density (BMD) were studied in 70- to 81-yr-old active male endurance-trained (long-distance runners, cross-country skiers, N = 67), strength-trained (throwers, weight-lifters, N = 14), and speed-trained (sprinters, jumpers, N = 16) athletes. A population sample of similar age (N = 42) served as a control group. The measurements were performed at the calcaneus by single-energy photon absorption. The endurance-trained athletes had higher bone width and depth, and the strength and speed-trained athletes higher bone depth than the control subjects. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease are at increased risk of developing disorder in bone and mineral metabolism The study was aimed to determine if inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a risk factor for osteoporosis in 103 adult patients. We included 103 IBD patients, 67 patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) and 36 with ulcerative colitis (UC). Bone mineral density was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. We used T score to express bone loss (osteopenia: -2.5 SD 2 years) and active disease would be risk factors of bone mineral loss in IBD.

METHODS: We included in this retrospective study 199 men with osteoporosis or osteopenia and 167 men with normal BMD as controls, aged between 55-85 years old. Mg and MgCO3 are among the 20 EU critical raw materials. Interestingly, Mg can be found at very high concentration in brines generated as waste stream from salt works. Literature works have demonstrated the feasibility of Mg extraction from brines [1–3] by reactive precipitation, for the production of Mg(OH)2. Here we present an overview of the experimental campaigns carried out using exhausted brine from real salt works (Italy) to produce Mg(OH)2 with high purity and conversion.
