Covalent and Ionic Functionalization of HLN Layered Perovskite by Sonochemical Methods

2017

We describe the functionalization of the layered perovskite HLaNb2O7 with n-propanol, n-decanol, 3-mercaptopropyl-trimethoxysilane, imidazole, n-decylamine, and histamine. The use of sonication is found to significantly improve the reaction yield and to reduce the reaction time, compared to conventional thermal treatment under reflux. The obtained intercalates are thoroughly characterized through the use of several complementary experimental techniques (scanning electron microscopy, IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, magic-angle spinning NMR), clarifying their structure and chemical bonding. The implications for the design of inorganic–organic composite material…

A Straightforward Approach to Multifunctional Graphene

2019

Graphene has been covalently functionalized through a one-pot reductive pathway using graphite intercalation compounds (GICs), in particular KC8 , with three different orthogonally protected derivatives of 4-aminobenzylamine. This novel multifunctional platform exhibits excellent bulk functionalization homogeneity (Hbulk ) and degree of addition while preserving the chemical functionalities of the organic addends through different protecting groups, namely: tert-butyloxycarbonyl (Boc), benzyloxycarbonyl (Cbz) and phthalimide (Pht). We have employed (temperature-dependent) statistical Raman spectroscopy (SRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), magic angle spinning solid state 13 C NMR …

Carbon Nano-onions: Potassium Intercalation and Reductive Covalent Functionalization

2021

Herein we report the synthesis of covalently functionalized carbon nano-onions (CNOs) via a reductive approach using unprecedented alkali-metal CNO intercalation compounds. For the first time, an in situ Raman study of the controlled intercalation process with potassium has been carried out revealing a Fano resonance in highly doped CNOs. The intercalation was further confirmed by electron energy loss spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Moreover, the experimental results have been rationalized with DFT calculations. Covalently functionalized CNO derivatives were synthesized by using phenyl iodide and n-hexyl iodide as electrophiles in model nucleophilic substitution reactions. The functiona…

Surface modification of luminescent lanthanide phosphate nanorods with cationic "Quat-primer" polymers.

2011

"Quat-primer" polymers bearing cationic groups were investigated as a surface modifier for Tb-doped cerium phosphate green-emitting fluorescent nanorods (NRs). The NRs were synthesized by a microwave process without using any complex agents or ligands and were characterized with different analytical tools such as X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Poly(ethyleneimine) partially quarternized with glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride was synthesized separately and characterized in detail. (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopic studies revealed that the quaternary ammonium group was covalently attached to the polymer. UV-vis spectroscopy was used to exam…

Pharmaceutical properties of supramolecular assembly of co-loaded cardanol/triazole-halloysite systems

2015

Halloysite nanotubes were explored as drug carrier for cardanol, which is considered as a promising natural anticancer active species. To this aim, besides the pristine nanoclay, a chemical modification of the nanocarrier was performed by attaching triazolium salts with different hydrophobicity at the outer surface of the hollow nanotubes. The interaction between cardanol and nanotubes was highlighted in solution by HPLC. This method proved the loading of the drug into the nanotubes. The solid dried complexes formed by pristine and modified halloysite with the cardanol were characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis as well as water contact angle to evidence the structure,…

On the trade-off between processability and opto-electronic properties of single wall carbon nanotube derivatives in thin film heterojunctions

2015

A flow functionalization route has been employed to derivatize single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by thienylphenyl groups. The SWCNT derivatives in the most soluble fraction have been characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, DLS analysis, DFT calculations, and UV-vis-NIR, microRaman and IR spectroscopies to study the degree of functionalization, the concentration of SWCNTs in solution, the dimension of the aggregates in solutions, the density of defects, and the presence of the thienylphenyl groups. Thin-film heterojunctions made of SWCNT derivatives and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) have been prepared by various methods employing the Langmuir–Schaefer technique, spin-coating and the…

Fundamental Insights into the Covalent Silane Functionalization of NiFe Layered Double Hydroxides

2020

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a class of 2D anionic materials exhibiting wide chemical versatility and promising applications in different fields, ranging from catalysis to energy storage and conversion. However, the covalent chemistry of this kind of 2D materials is still barely explored. Herein, the covalent functionalization with silanes of a magnetic NiFe-LDH is reported. The synthetic route consists of a topochemical approach followed by anion exchange reaction with surfactant molecules prior to covalent functionalization with the (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) molecules. The functionalized NiFe-APTES was fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, e…

Water Absorption of Hemp Fibre Nonwovens Modified with Metal and Metal Oxide Nanoparticles

2015

In this paper changes of ability of hemp fibre nonwovens to absorb water after deposition of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles were investigated. Moisture content of samples after storage in different climatic conditions was determined using thermogravimetric method. The obtained results were compared with the results of previous research based on investigation of water absorption of metalized woven fabric of bast fibre. Analysis of measurements showed that nonwoven samples with surface treated in plasma attract water slightly better than sample with untreated surface; this was more pronounced in woven fabric samples. In turn, metal coatings reduced water sorption. Unlike woven fabric sam…

Insights into grafting of (3-Mercaptopropyl) trimethoxy silane on halloysite nanotubes surface

2020

Abstract Functionalization of halloysite nanotubes surface by using organosilanes is sensitive to the reaction conditions. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were modified using (3-Mercaptopropyl) trimethoxy silane (MPTMS). The experiments were performed under different reaction conditions including, various solvents [Toluene, Tetrahydrofuran (THF), Ethanol, n-Hexane, 1,4 Dioxane and Acetonitrile], water content in the reaction media, volume of solvent, number of moles of silane and catalysts (triethyl amine, ammonia solution and tetra-ethoxy titanium). The elemental analysis, FT-IR analysis were used to identify the samples, which attained the highest percent of functionalization. SEM image and t…

Interface Amorphization of Two‐Dimensional Black Phosphorus upon Treatment with Diazonium Salts

2021

Abstract Two‐dimensional (2D) black phosphorus (BP) represents one of the most appealing 2D materials due to its electronic, optical, and chemical properties. Many strategies have been pursued to face its environmental instability, covalent functionalization being one of the most promising. However, the extremely low functionalization degrees and the limitations in proving the nature of the covalent functionalization still represent challenges in many of these sheet architectures reported to date. Here we shine light on the structural evolution of 2D‐BP upon the addition of electrophilic diazonium salts. We demonstrated the absence of covalent functionalization in both the neutral and the r…
