A modified ansatz for explicitly correlated coupled-cluster wave functions with a single correlation factor is set forward. It is based on the fixed amplitude ansatz of Ten-no [Chem. Phys. Lett. 398, 56 (2004)] to which an extra term is added that allows for the explicitly correlated description of singly excited configurations. The new approach has been implemented for coupled-cluster singles and doubles with the aid of automated techniques. Numerical results are presented for vertical excitation energies, and ground and excited state equilibrium distances and harmonic frequencies of diatomics. Aggregation of the amyloid A? peptide and its accumulation into insoluble deposits (plaques) are believed to be the main cause of neuronal dysfunction associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD); small molecules that can interfere with the A? amyloid fibril formation are therefore of interest for a potential therapeutic strategy. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique offers a robust label-free approach applicable in various investigations including binding affinity, specificity and kinetics of biological macromolecules (e.g., peptides, proteins and nucleotidase) and small molecules. SPR provides extremely important data on the kinetics and affinity of substances examined, through which bio-specific interaction(s) can be established by the analysis of adsorption of analyte onto the immobilized ligand(s) on a sensor-based analytical system. Due to SPR wide applications in biomedical laboratories, the aim of this editorial is to highlight the importance of SPR in affinity kinetics and ligand immobilization.

The successful integration of in vitro-generated tissues is dependent on adequate vascularization in vivo. Human outgrowth endothelial cells (OECs) isolated from the mononuclear cell fraction of peripheral blood represent a potent population of circulating endothelial progenitors that could provide a cell source for rapid anastomosis and scaffold vascularization. Ab initio quasi-relativistic calculations on angular momentum and magnetic couplings of molecular electronic states.

Abstract We formulate an ab initio method of quasirelativistic calculations on angular momentum and magnetic transition matrix elements between adiabatic electronic states of molecules. Our approach is based on the construction of a state-selective effective Hamiltonian and transition density matrices by means of the multireference many-body perturbation theory. Pilot applications to the evaluation of B 0 + u → B ″1 u predissociation matrix elements in I 2 and interactions in the B 0 + u ∼ B 1 u complex of Te 2 are reported.
N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalyzed Asymmetric Synthesis of Dihydropyranothiazoles via Azolium Enolate Intermediates

A highly diastereo- and enantiostereoselective synthesis of bicyclic dihydropyranothiazoles combining a thiazole and δ-lactone skeleton via NHC-catalyzed [4+2] annulation of 5-alkenylthiazolones and α-chloroaldehydes has been developed. The heterocyclic products are formed via azolium enolate intermediates in good yields with high diastereo- and enantistereoselectivities.

Abstract A potentially bio-mimetic Diels–Alder cyclization to construct the bicyclo[2.2.2] ring system common to the paraherquamides, marcfortines, sclerotamides, brevianamides, VM55599, and asperparaline is reported. Epi-deoxybrevianamide E (22) is converted into the corresponding lactim ether (23) and then oxidized with DDQ to provide an azadiene (24) which is tautomerized in the presence of base to azadiene 25 which, spontaneously cyclizes to give a 2:1 mixture of cycloadducts 26 and 27. These cycloadducts are each in turn, converted into d , l -C-19-epi-brevianamide A (20) and d , l -brevianamide B (6).
