Uptake and bioavailability of persistant organic pollutants by plants grown in contaminated soil
2005
This paper assesses the uptake of persistent organic pollutants (POP's) into plants. In particular, uptake of alpha-endosulfan, beta-endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate from lettuce. The lettuce plants were grown on compost that had previously been contaminated at 10 and 50 microg g(-1) per POP. The soil was slurry spiked by adding the appropriate amount of POP in acetone in an approximate ratio of 1 ratio 2, w/v soil ratio solvent. The solvent was left to evaporate at ambient temperature for 24 hours. Lettuce plants were grown under artificial daylight for 12 hours a day. The influence of soil ageing on the recovery of POP's from spiked soil samples was also assessed. The average recovery of…

Rotor bar breakage data obtained from fatigue test
2019
The data hereby provided was acquired during a fatigue test developed at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Universitat Politècnica de València (Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Spain) in 2011 by PhD student Vicente Climente-Alarcon under supervision of Prof. Martin Riera-Guasp. The fatigue test involved subjecting a 1.5 kW, 1 pole pair induction motor to severe cycling until a bar breakage naturally developed. The cycling consisted of a Direct-on-line (DOL) startup followed by a stationary operation period of at least 10 seconds. A plug stopping was added at the later stages of the test. To maximize the possible damage to the rotor cage, a high load inertia caused heavy (long) s…
The predatory role of white shrimp (Litopenaeus setiferus) in seasonal declines of subtidal macrobenthos
2009
The overall purpose of this study was to develop a quantitative model to assess the influence of L. setiferus predation on subtidal macrobenthic abundance cycles in an estuarine creek system. Subtidal macrobenthic populations in temperate marine soft-bottom environments are known to undergo seasonal abundance cycles. Although the factors responsible for driving these seasonal shifts in abundance are difficult to identify, both environmental and biological factors have received credit. Juvenile white shrimp (Litopenaeus setiferus) are seasonally abundant epibenthic predators in the North Inlet estuary that have significant influence upon estuarine macrobenthic densities. Data generated from …
Application of the entropy model to high-curved turbulent flows
2018
The entropy-based approach allows the estimation of the mean flow velocity in open channel flow by using the maximum flow velocity. The entropy model allows to correlate the mean velocity, um, and the maximum velocity, umax by means of a linear relationship, um, = Φ (M) umax, which depends on the entropy parameter, M, characteristic of the fluvial section ([1]). The present work also focuses on high-curved channels where the secondary motion, which is also induced by the channel’s curvature, evolves along the bend. The study is motivated by the fact that meandering bends have radii of curvature continuously variable in stream-wise direction so that convective flow accelerations occur and th…
New Trends in Urban Drainage Modelling
2019
This book addresses the latest research advances, innovations, and applications in the field of urban drainage and water management as presented by leading researchers, scientists and practitioners from around the world at the 11th International Conference on Urban Drainage Modelling (UDM), held in Palermo, Italy from 23 to 26 September, 2018. The conference was promoted and organized by the University of Palermo, Italy and the International Working Group on Data and Models, with the support of four of the world’s leading organizations in the water sector: the International Water Association (IWA), International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR), Environmenta…
