Els verbs de percepció visual en català: classificació semàntica i distribució en gèneres escrits
2022
This work focuses on the study of the meanings conveyed by two visual perception verbs (mirar and veure) in Central Catalan within the theoretical framework of cognitive semantics. Our objective is twofold: (i) to analyze and describe them in order to establish metaphorical and metonymic semantic projections; and (ii) to determine the intralinguistic distribution of the non-prototypical meanings of these verbs. We have analyzed examples extracted from dictionaries (mostly DIEC2) and 1.750 forms picked out from the literary narrative and press texts of the Corpus textual informatitzat de la llengua catalana (CTILC). By analyzing these examples and the context in which they appear, we establi…
The Linguistic Landscape of the Valencian Community: A Comparative Analysis of Bilingual and Multilingual Signs in Three Different Areas
2019
During the last decades, the promotion of multilingualism has been key when designing linguistic policies in Europe. Previous research studies have focused on how languages are employed in fields such as education, media, and urban sites, among others. Bearing all this in mind, the aim of this paper is to analyse the linguistic landscapes of three municipalities located in a bilingual region in Spain, that of the Valencian Community. Thus, issues such as language contact, language dominance, and the languages used by a number of institutions on private and public signs were examined. As for the method, over 140 pictures of language signs were taken in order to examine language contact, lang…
Theory and Practice of Legislation Journal in Volume 2, Number 2, November 2014.
2014
This special issue of The Theory and Practice of Legislation presents one of the outcomes of the project launched at the Sir William Dale Centre by Prof. Helen Xanthaki and Dr. Giulia Adriana Pennisi in 2013 and entitled Legislative Drafting and Language. The projects investigates the crossroad between legislative drafting and language/linguistics with the aim to open a new agenda: the use of teachings from the discipline of linguistics in applications useful and relevant to legislative drafting. An example of the results gained thus far are the two workshops on “Legislative Drafting and Language” that took place at the IALS in June 2013 and June 2014 respectively, and witnessed the partici…
Video calls as a nexus of practice in multilingual translocal families
2023
This study explores how daily video calls were used by two multilingual family constellations to keep in contact with members located elsewhere. A three-stage data collection and analysis protocol was developed together with the two main participants, two single mothers each with a 4-year-old child. The results show that active collaboration among all members of the family was needed to get the activity going. The families employed a de facto family language policy where the focus was on successful communication and nurturing emotional bonds rather than developing language skills. At the same time, the regular video calls added a significant amount of time spent together and increased the a…
Tensions on Finnish Constitutional Bilingualism in Neo-nationalist Times : Constructions of Swedish in Monolingual and Bilingual Contexts
2020
This chapter analyses the tensions on the status of Finnish constitutional bilingualism from the perspective of higher education, more precisely from the position of Swedish in one monolingually Swedish university (Åbo Akademi University [ÅAU]) and one bilingual university (University of Helsinki [UH]). It contributes to an understanding of the position of minority languages in universities in times when the use of English has increased on one hand and neo-nationalist tendencies stressing the importance of national language(s) are on the rise on the other. Apparently, the new bilingual programmes at UH challenge the tradition of institutional separation of national languages. At ÅAU, in tur…

What’s in the family app? : Making sense of digitally mediated communication within multilingual families
2020
Communication within contemporary families is increasingly and to a significant extent mediated through technological devices and digital applications. Although the everyday reality of many multilingual families is permeated by technology, research on their digital and language practices has been scant. This article argues for the need for eclectic approaches that draw upon theories, practices, and findings from research on transnational families and migration, digitally mediated family communication, parental mediation, multilingualism online, and family multilingualism and language transmission. Two empirical case studies are presented on multilingual family constellations in Finland in w…
EU criminal justice and Italian law: investigating terminological gaps
2018
Legal translation entails a basic knowledge of the legal systems involved, familiarity with the relevant terminology and competency in the specific legal writing style of the target language. Apart from terminological lacunae and lexical gaps, the translator has to consider not only the textual conventions in the source language that are often culture-dependent and may not correspond to conventions in the target culture, but also the linguistic structures found in the source language that may have no equivalent structures in the target language. In this this regard, the EU carries this process to new heights for a number of reasons: it is a novel creation; law plays a central part in the ex…
Multimodal mediational means in assessment of processes : an argument for a hard-CLIL approach
2022
In Japan, CLIL instruction falls under a soft-CLIL approach, content serving as secondary to language instruction. Furthermore, assessment in classrooms in Japan is oftentimes limited to assessing the product summatively. In the paper, we argue for the value of focusing on content in CLIL activities and assessing the process with the goal to promote learning. The present small-scale study at a Japanese university explored how learners (n = 6) used multimodal mediational means to build their conceptual understanding of ‘Earth breathing’ in order to create a presentation on it for a general English course. The further goal was to explore how inferences made from assessing this process of lear…
