Development of a quadruplex PCR system for the genetic analysis of X-chromosomal STR loci

2003

Short tandem repeat systems on the X chromosome are the natural counterpart to the well-established Y-chromosomal STR loci. The X-linked systems are inherited as a single haplotype only in males, whereas in females, the X chromosomes recombine and exhibit the same characteristics as the autosomes. Nevertheless, X-linked systems may provide a useful tool in paternity cases with female offspring, in particular when the alleged father is not available for testing, or in forensic identification cases based on the comparison with firstor second-degree relatives. Only a small number of STR loci have been described on the X chromosome, and a number of these are not highly informative. Therefore, w…

The sf32 unique gene of Spodoptera frugiperda multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SfMNPV) is a non-essential gene that could be involved in nucleocapsid o…

2013

A recombinant virus lacking the sf32 gene (Sf32null), unique to the Spodoptera frugiperda multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SfMNPV), was generated by homologous recombination from a bacmid comprising the complete viral genome (Sfbac). Transcriptional analysis revealed that sf32 is an early gene. Occlusion bodies (OBs) of Sf32null contained 62% more genomic DNA than viruses containing the sf32 gene, Sfbac and Sf32null-repair, although Sf32null DNA was three-fold less infective when injected in vivo. Sf32null OBs were 18% larger in diameter and contained 17% more nucleocapsids within ODVs than those of Sfbac. No significant differences were detected in OB pathogenicity (50% lethal concentration)…

Cytotoxicity and chemosensitizing activity of amphiphilic poly(glycerol)-poly(alkylene oxide) block copolymers.

2014

All polymeric chemosensitizers proposed thus far have a linear poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrophilic block. To testify whether precisely this chemical structure and architecture of the hydrophilic block is a prerequisite for chemosensitization, we tested a series of novel block copolymers containing a hyperbranched polyglycerol segment as a hydrophilic block (PPO-NG copolymers) on multi-drug-resistant (MDR) tumor cells in culture. PPO-NG copolymers inhibited MDR of three cell lines, indicating that the linear PEG can be substituted for a hyperbranched polyglycerol block without loss of the polymers' chemosensitizing activity. The extent of MDR reversal increased with the polymers affinity…

Primary Plasma Cell Leukemia Associated with Adult Fanconi Syndrome

2006

Abstract Primary plasma cell leukemia (PCL) is a rare variant of multiple myeloma that occurs de novo in patients without a history of plasma cell disorder. We describe a case of λ PCL that showed a prolonged survival of 2 years and 6 months associated with a generalized dysfunction of the proximal renal tubule. On presentation, the patient had anemia (hemoglobin level, 11 g/dL), thrombocytopenia (platelet count, 102,000/μL), and renal insufficiency (creatinine level, 2.75 mg/dL; creatinine clearance, 19 mL per minute; urea, 71 mg/dL). In addition to the common clinical picture, our case showed proteinuria (30 mg/dL), glycosuria (150 mg/dL) with normal glycemia, low uric acid concentration …

2005

This paper examines the class formation procedures used in French elementary schools, specially when combination classes (with two grade levels) occur. Principals were interviewed about pupils' assignment criteria and at the same time, the class distributional properties of 70 classes were analysed. The results confirm that pupils are sorted into classrooms based on a combination of individual criteria, including gender and academic achievement, in an effort to keep to the initial mix of children. Moreover, principal and teachers assign more independent students to combination classes to ease the burden they place on teachers. These purposeful assignment procedures, which integrate academic…

Between the 7th and 10th centuries, the “Moulin Vaquet"site, near Honguemare-Guenouville (Eure) on the Roumois Plateau, was occupied by a village – a rural settlement built around a necropolis, likely dominated by a wooden church. The 8,600m2 excavation of the site run by MADE (the Eure archaeological mission) complements the INRAP excavations a few hundred …

Cardiovascular risk in patients without known cardiovascular disease.

2014

Understanding the risks of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) allows for better patient education and management. Multiple risk models have been validated in large patient populations and provide insights into the risks associated with CVD. When assessing such risks, we suggest using a model that predicts myocardial infarction, cardiovascular death, and/or cerebrovascular events. In this review, we analyze several risk models and stratify the risks associated with CVD. We suggest that appropriate profiling of patients at-risk of CVD will lead to better physician recognition and treatment of modifiable risk factors, appropriate application of ATP III treatment for hyperlipidemia, a…

Studies of malformation syndromes of man XIB: the cerebro-hepato-renal syndrome of zellweger: Comparative pathology

1976

A study of 11 autopsied cases of the cerebro-hepato-renal syndrome of Zellweger (ZS) is reported. All cases had severe, persistent congenital hypotonia, hepatic lobular disarray, renal cortical cysts and pulmonary hypoplasia. Many had cardiovascular malformations, hepatomegaly, cerebral cortical gyral maldevelopment and pancreatic islet hyperplasia. Additional, less frequent findings are delineated. Results of iron content studies of hepatic and renal tissues are related to age of survival and possible development of fibrosis.
