Molecular Determinants of the Response of Tumor Cells to Boswellic Acids

2011

Frankincense (Boswellia serrata, B. carterii) is used as traditional remedy to treat inflammatory diseases. The molecular effects of the active ingredients, the boswellic acids, on the immune system have previously been studied and verified in several clinical studies. Boswellic acids also inhibit cancer cell growth in vitro and in vivo. The molecular basis of the cytotoxicity of boswellic acids is, however, not fully understood as yet. By mRNA-based microarray, COMPARE, and hierarchical cluster analyses, we identified a panel of genes from diverse functional groups, which were significantly associated with sensitivity or resistance of a- or b-boswellic acids, such as transcription factors,…

Editorial: Emerging heterocycles as bioactive compounds

2023

Heterocycles represent a privileged scaffold due to their ability to interact with biological systems via heteroatoms. It is no coincidence that every year the Food and Drug Administration approves numerous new drugs that contain at least one heterocyclic system as active pharmacophoric part in their structure. Many heterocyclic compounds with therapeutic properties, including anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and so on, come from natural sources such as plants and animals, and medicinal chemists very often use them to study their chemical space and improve their biological activity. In fact, several efficient approaches for the formation of aromatic heterocyclic compounds and th…

Synthetic Approaches to the Lamellarins—A Comprehensive Review

2014

The present review discusses the known synthetic routes to the lamellarin alkaloids published until 2014. It begins with syntheses of the structurally simpler type-II lamellarins and then focuses on the larger class of the 5,6-saturated and -unsaturated type-I lamellarins. The syntheses are grouped by the strategy employed for the assembly of the central pyrrole ring.

Antinociceptive Effects of Turkish Endemic Eryngium kotschyi Boiss. Roots by Bioactivity Guided Fractionation

2010

Eryngium species (Apiaceae) are well known plants in ethnobotanical culture throughout world and also in Turkey. They are used as antitussive, diuretic as well as for analgesic and antiinflammatory purposes in traditional medicine. This study aimed to evaluate the antinociceptive activity of endemic Eryngium kotschyi Boiss. root extracts by bioguided fractionation. The antinociceptive activity of the extracts/fractions/compound was studied in mice using acetic acid induced writhing test and and hot plate test. The methanolic extract was sequentially partitioned with hexane, dichloromethane and water saturated n-butanol. Among the fractions, the n-BuOH fraction showed the most significant re…
