Markov Chains and Electrical Networks

2020

There is a natural connection between electrical networks and so called reversible Markov chains. An example for such a chain is the symmetric graph random walk which, in each step, jumps to a randomly chosen graph neighbor at equal probability. This connection is studied here in some detail. As an application, we prove the statement that if such a graph random walk is recurrent, then it is recurrent also on each subgraph. (Although this statement is rather plausible, it is hard to show by different means.) In particular, the graph random walk on a percolation cluster of the planar integer lattice is recurrent.

Compensation of the impact of low-cost manufacturing techniques in the design of E-plane multiport waveguide junctions

2016

In this work, a full-wave tool for the accurate analysis and design of compensated E-plane multiport junctions is proposed. The implemented tool is capable of evaluating the undesired effects related to the use of low-cost manufacturing techniques, which are mostly due to the introduction of rounded corners in the cross section of the rectangular waveguides of the device. The obtained results show that, although stringent mechanical effects are imposed, it is possible to compensate for the impact of the cited low-cost manufacturing techniques by redesigning the matching elements considered in the original device. Several new designs concerning a great variety of E-plane components (such as …

Rigorous Multimode Equivalent Network Representation of Multilayer Planar Circuits

2018

The objective of this paper is to extend the use of the Multimode Equivalent Network formulation, originally developed to analyze waveguide junctions, to the analysis of planar circuits that include arbitrary rectangular printed, zero thickness metallizations together with internal and external ports in the transverse plane. The theoretical derivations lead to an accurate and computationally efficient tool for the analysis of boxed, multilayer microwave printed circuits. In addition to theory, the tool developed is used here to analyze two practical examples: a dual-bandpass and a 4-pole bandpass boxed microstrip filters. Good agreement with respect to commercial software tools and measurem…

XPL the Extensible Presentation Language

2009

The last decade has witnessed a growing interest in the development of web interfaces enabling both multiple ways to access contents and, at the same time, fruition by multiple modalities of interaction (point-and-click, contents reading, voice commands, gestures, etc.). In this paper we describe a framework aimed at streamlining the design process of multi-channel, multimodal interfaces enabling full reuse of software components. This framework is called the eXtensible Presentation architecture and Language (XPL), a presentation language based on design pattern paradigm that keeps separated the presentation layer from the underlying programming logic. The language supplies a methodology to…

Searching for a Common Language

2010

Perhaps you remember Steven Spielberg’s movie released in 1977, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The memorable end of this movie shows how humans might communicate with extraterrestrials through the interchange of music, with the famous melody “D E C C G” that we all hummed.

Syntactic Variance and Priming Effects in Translation

2016

The present work investigates the relationship between syntactic variation and priming in translation. It is based on the claim that languages share a common cognitive network of neural activity. When the source and target languages are solicited in a translation context, this shared network can lead to facilitation effects, so-called priming effects. We suggest that priming is a default setting in translation, a special case of language use where source and target languages are constantly co-activated. Such priming effects are not restricted to lexical elements, but do also occur on the syntactic level. We tested these hypotheses with translation data from the TPR database, more specifical…

EP 34. Functional hierarchy within the neural network for optokinetic ‘look’ nystagmus

2016

Item does not contain fulltext Key nodes of neural networks for ocular motor control and visual motion processing have been localized using saccades, smooth pursuit, and optokinetic nystagmus (OKN). Within the context of an independent fMRI study using OKN, 9 bilateral network nodes were localized comprising cortical eye fields in frontal (FEF), supplementary motor (SEF), cingulate (CEF) and parietal cortex (PEF), visual motion centers MT+ and V6, the superior colliculus (SC), the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and the globus pallidus (GP). Here, we examined the network's functional hierarchy as present in the structural co-variation (SCoV) and resting-state (RS) fMRI, and the effect of R…

Algorithms for Graph and Network Analysis: Clustering and Search of Motifs in Graphs

2019

In this article we deal with problems that involve the analysis of topology in graphs modeling biological networks. In particular, we consider two important problems: (i) Network clustering, aiming at finding compact subgraphs inside the input graph in order to isolate molecular complexes, and (ii) searching for motifs, i.e., sub-structures repeated in the input network and presenting high significance (e.g., in terms of their frequency). We provide a compact overview of the main techniques proposed in the literature to solve these problems.

Mobile social networking in theory and practice

2008

Mobile social networks have gained the attention of the media, academy and mobile market. Despite of the robust tradition of network and community studies, mobile social networks are often addressed improperly. This paper presents a theoretical framework to study mobile social networking and examines the design implications of results of an exploratory study conducted with a group of 18 young adults in Finland. The findings of this study indicate that the quality of mobile applications offering social networking could be greatly increased by integrating the knowledge of two traditions that so far developed in parallel, namely the mathematical as well as social approaches to social networks.
