Effects of nitroglycerin or pentaerithrityl tetranitrate treatment on the gene expression in rat hearts: evidence for cardiotoxic and cardioprotectiv…
2009
Nitroglycerin (NTG) and pentaerithrityl tetranitrate (PETN) are organic nitrates used in the treatment of angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and congestive heart failure. Recent data show marked differences in the effects of NTG and PETN on the generation of reactive oxygen species. These differences are attributed to different effects of NTG and PETN on the expression of antioxidative proteins like the heme oxygenase-I. To analyze the expressional effects of NTG and PETN in a more comprehensive manner we performed whole genome expression profiling experiments using cardiac total RNA from NTG- or PETN-treated rats and DNA microarrays containing oligonucleotides representing 27,044 rat…
Potential of interactive multiobjective optimization in supporting the design of a groundwater biodenitrification process
2019
The design of water treatment plants requires simultaneous analysis of technical, economic and environmental aspects, identified by multiple conflicting objectives. We demonstrated the advantages of an interactive multiobjective optimization (MOO) method over a posteriori methods in an unexplored field, namely the design of a biological treatment plant for drinking water production, that tackles the process drawbacks, contrarily to what happens in a traditional volumetric-load-driven design procedure. Specifically, we consider a groundwater denitrification biofilter, simulated by the Activated Sludge Model modified with two-stage denitrification kinetics. Three objectives were defined (nitr…
the role of mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrognase (ALDH-2) for bioactivation of organic nitrates: “Proof of concept” through investigations in ALDH-2 k…

Nitroglycerin Hits the Nerve
2008
Organic nitrates are still widely used for the treatment of acute and chronic angina and congestive heart failure. When given acutely, their effectiveness is indisputable; in contrast, their long-term efficacy is limited because of serious side effects such as the development of tolerance and
Über die polymerisation von acrylnitril mit silbernitrat
1963
The polymerization of acrylonitrile with AgNO3 in bulk and in solution was investigated. Informative kinetic experiments were carried out and it is suggested that a radical mechanism is operative; light acts as a catalyst. A number of inorganic salts and organic nitrates were check…
Do We Still Need Organic Nitrates?⁎⁎Editorials published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiologyreflect the views of the authors and do …
2007
Organic nitrates are still quite frequently used for the treatment of acute and chronic angina, and acute and chronic congestive heart failure. When given acutely, their effectiveness is undisputable; however, their long-term efficacy is substantially limited due to the development of tolerance ([1
