An unusual case of sudden cardiac death during sexual intercourse
2018
The most common cause of sudden death during sexual intercourse in adults is heart disease, and it is usually the male, whereas the death of the woman is unusual. Generally, in these cases, death occurs as a result of cardiovascular disease. The authors report an unusual case of the sudden death of a young woman during sexual intercourse. The post-mortem investigations (autopsy, cardiac nuclear magnetic resonance and cardiac histology) demonstrated a previously undiagnosed arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. The terminal cause of death was a malignant arrhythmia from arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. This is the first report of a case in which sexual activity ca…
Difference in Mortality Risk in Elderly People with Bronchial Obstruction Diagnosed Using a Fixed Cutoff or the Lower Limit of Normal of the FEV1/FVC…
2017
Background: Whether a fixed cutoff or the lower limit of normal of the FEV1/FVC ratio should be used to diagnose bronchial obstruction is still a matter of debate. This issue is particularly important for elderly people. Objectives: We used equations applicable up to 90 years of age to evaluate the mortality of elderly people diagnosed with bronchial obstruction using either a fixed cutoff of 0.7 or the lower limit of normal (LLN). Methods: Participants in the SaRA (Salute Respiratoria nell'Anziano, Italian for "Respiratory Health in the Elderly") study were grouped as follows: FEV1/FVC ≥0.7 and ≥ LLN (n = 535: F-/L-), FEV1/FVC <0.7 but ≥ LLN (n = 118: F+/L-), and FEV1/FVC <0.7 and < LLN (n…
An Agent-Based Model of Extortion Racketeering
2016
Mafias can be considered as criminal organisations that are in the business of producing, promoting, and selling protection. Here, we describe the Palermo Scenario, an agent-based model of protection rackets aimed to deepen our understanding of protection rackets, and help policymakers to evaluate methods for destabilising them. Additionally, since the system is explicitly specified, we can use it to investigate the entire causal pathway from cause to effect: not only from actions to Mafia destabilisation, but also the intermediate actions along the path and actors' internal mental representations among the population.
L'utilisation de la musique comme support de nouveaux apprentissages dans le vieillisement normal et la maladie d'Alzheimer
2012
This thesis research aims to test the potential of music as a mnemonic support for new learning in normal elderly and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) participants. Several studies have highlighted the beneficial effects of music on cognition in aging and dementia. At the same time, in young adults, the idea that music could serve as a mnemonic support is highly debated. Yet, very few studies addressed this question in aging or dementia. In the present work, we conduct two studies in a cohort of 8 mild Alzheimer’s disease and 7 matched control participants. The first study concerns verbal memory, and compares learning and different retention delays of lyrics (unknown texts) that are either spoken o…
On Hurwitz spaces of coverings with one special fiber
2009
Let X X' Y be a covering of smooth, projective complex curves such that p is a degree 2 etale covering and f is a degree d covering, with monodromy group Sd, branched in n + 1 points one of which is a special point whose local monodromy has cycle type given by the partition e = (e1,...,er) of d. We study such coverings whose monodromy group is either W(Bd) or wN(W(Bd))(G1)w-1 for some w in W(Bd), where W(Bd) is the Weyl group of type Bd, G1 is the subgroup of W(Bd) generated by reflections with respect to the long roots ei - ej and N(W(Bd))(G1) is the normalizer of G1. We prove that in both cases the corresponding Hurwitz spaces are not connected and hence are not irreducible. In fact, we s…

Banach elements and spectrum in Banach quasi *-algebras
2006
A normal Banach quasi -algebra (X;A_0) has a distinguished Banach - algebra X_b consisting of bounded elements of X. The latter -algebra is shown to coincide with the set of elements of X having fi nite spectral radius. If the family P(X) of bounded invariant positive sesquilinear forms on X contains suffi ciently many elements then the Banach -algebra of bounded elements can be characterized via a C -seminorm defi ned by the elements of P(X).

On Combinatorial Generation of Prefix Normal Words
2014
A prefix normal word is a binary word with the property that no substring has more 1s than the prefix of the same length. This class of words is important in the context of binary jumbled pattern matching. In this paper we present an efficient algorithm for exhaustively listing the prefix normal words with a fixed length. The algorithm is based on the fact that the language of prefix normal words is a bubble language, a class of binary languages with the property that, for any word w in the language, exchanging the first occurrence of 01 by 10 in w results in another word in the language. We prove that each prefix normal word is produced in O(n) amortized time, and conjecture, based on expe…
Giudizio penale di seconda istanza e giusto processo - Seconda edizione
2008
IL LAVORO SI OCCUPA DELLO STUDIO DEL PROCESSO PENALE DI APPELLO ALLA LUCE DELLA RIFORMA COSTITUZIONALE CHE HA INTRODOOTO IL "GIUSTO PROCESSO" NELL''ART.111. LO STUDIO SI PREFIGGE DI VERIFICARE LA COMPATIBILITA'' DEL SECONDO GIUDIZIO CON IL PRINCIPIO DEL CONTRADDITTORIO E DEGLI ALTRI CANONI FORNDAMENTALI DEL PROCESSO A VOCAZIONE ACCUSATORIA, VISTO L''INNEGABILE FISIONOIMIA DI MECCANISMO DI CRITICA DEL PRIMO GIUDIZIO, COME TALE CARTOLARE E NON ORALE. SI PROPONGOO SOLUZIONI NORMATIVE PER SUPERARE GLI ASPETTI DI FRIZIONE CON IL MODELLO DEL PROCESSO ACCUSATORIO ACCREDITATO IN COSTITUZIONE ALL''ART. 111.
