Regional Economics Tools applied to Sport: New Perspectives

2007

This article shows how some regional economics tools, which are not very well known, can be used in the field of sport. The first part consists of a short summary of the location analysis models. In a second part, we show on a case study, that computable location models can be used to determine the optimal location of sporting facilities in the context of intercommunity. To conclude, some extensions are suggested from a theoretical point of view as well as for empirical applications.

Sensitivity of Estimators for Measuring Information Amount in Web-Based Medical Documents

2018

Nowadays, communication between patient and doctor during an appointment has changed significantly owning to the opportunity that medical portals provide. Whether or not necessarily appreciated by the doctors, the patients became more aware of the first symptoms’ suggesting a particular disease and the medical procedures that apply as a standard. Estimating amount of reliable factual medical information in a document is carried out by parametrizing space of digital documents and dividing it into subsequent layers that represent distribution of the system responses computed as random variables to a query about medical information. Analyzed are the following attributes: dynamism of decrease o…

Constructing a Pareto front approximation for decision making

2011

An approach to constructing a Pareto front approximation to computationally expensive multiobjective optimization problems is developed. The approximation is constructed as a sub-complex of a Delaunay triangulation of a finite set of Pareto optimal outcomes to the problem. The approach is based on the concept of inherent nondominance. Rules for checking the inherent nondominance of complexes are developed and applying the rules is demonstrated with examples. The quality of the approximation is quantified with error estimates. Due to its properties, the Pareto front approximation works as a surrogate to the original problem for decision making with interactive methods. Qc 20120127

Chemically Fueled Block Copolymer Self‐Assembly into Transient Nanoreactors**

2021

In chemically fueled supramolecular materials, molecular self-assembly is coupled to a fuel-driven chemical reaction cycle. The fuel-dependence makes the material dynamic and endows it with exciting properties like adaptivity and autonomy. In contrast to the large work on the self-assembly of small molecules, we herein designed a diblock copolymer, which self assembles into transient micelles when coupled to a fuel-driven chemical reaction cycle. Moreover, we used these transient block copolymer micelles to locally increase the concentration of hydrophobic reagents and thereby function as a transient nanoreactor.

Mechanical and microstructural properties prediction by artificial neural networks in FSW processes of dual phase titanium alloys

2012

Abstract Friction Stir Welding (FSW), as a solid state welding process, seems to be one of the most promising techniques for joining titanium alloys avoiding a large number of difficulties arising from the use of traditional fusion welding processes. In order to pursue cost savings and a time efficient design, the development of numerical simulations of the process can represent a valid choice for engineers. In the paper an artificial neural network was properly trained and linked to an existing 3D FEM model for the FSW of Ti–6Al–4V titanium alloy, with the aim to predict both the microhardness values and the microstructure of the welded butt joints at the varying of the main process parame…

Thermal Characterization of the Chip-Tool Interface When Using Coated Turning Inserts

2000

Abstract This paper reports some results of extensive experimental investigations of the thermal interactions between the coating/substrate and the moving surface of the chip. Semi-orthogonal cutting when bar turning a medium carbon steel and an austenitic stainless steel was carried out. Both flat-faced and grooved inserts coated with TiC, TiC/TiN, and TiC/Al 2 O 3 /TiN were tested. A standard K-type thermocouple embedded in the workpiece was used to convert measured efm's to the interfacial temperatures. In addition, the chiprake contact length and the area of contact were determined by using computer processing of scanned contact images. The minimum steady-state temperature at the interf…

Phase evolution in hot forging of dual phase titanium alloys: Experiments and numerical analysis

2014

Abstract Modern aeronautical and aerospace industries must face the demanding challenge of reducing operational consumption and production costs coming from materials and labor. Current trend of engineering is oriented to meet both requirements increasing the use of materials characterized by high specific resistance as titanium alloys. Hot forging can be used to reduce the production costs of titanium components: forging in closed dies of billets or semi-finished forms, at different temperatures above or below the β-transus temperature, allows the production of complex shapes with limited amount of edge trim removal and machining rework after forging. Unfortunately, as far as Ti–6Al–4V tit…

Two birds with one stone: dual grain-boundary and interface passivation enables >22% efficient inverted methylammonium-free perovskite solar cells

2021

Advancing inverted (pin) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is key to further enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of flexible and perovskite-based tandem photovoltaics. Yet, the presence of defects at grain boundaries and in particular interfacial recombination at the perovskite/electron transporting layer interface induce severe non-radiative recombination losses, limiting the open-circuit voltage (VOC) and fill factor (FF) of PSCs in this architecture. In this work, we introduce a dual passivation strategy using the long chain alkylammonium salt phenethylammonium chloride (PEACl) both as an additive and for surface treatment to simultaneously passivate the grain b…

Advancing manufacturing processes research at NAMRC 46

2018

Research on manufacturing processes is further enriched and becomes stronger at the 46th North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NAMRC 46) at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, USA. Manufacturing processes are tightly connected to innovation. They have been the key areas that support and influence a nation’s competitiveness and economy since the eighteenth century. As the primary driving force behind economic growth, manufacturing processes enable and facilitate innovative products realisation, ranging from heavy-duty machinery to smart home electronics. In the past centuries, they have contributed significantly to modern civilisation and created the momentum that driv…
