L2 English vocabulary breadth and knowledge of derivational morphology : One or two constructs?
2022
Derivational morphology (DM) and how it can be assessed have been investigated relatively rarely in language learning and testing research. The goal of this study is to add to the understanding of the nature of DM knowledge, exploring whether and how it is separable from vocabulary breadth. Eight L2 (second or foreign language) English DM knowledge measures and three measures of the size of the English vocabulary were administered to 120 learners. We conducted two confirmatory factor analyses, one with one underlying factor and the other treating vocabulary breadth and DM as separate. As neither model had a satisfactory fit without introducing a residual covariance to the two-factor model,…

A language socialisation perspective on Swedish immersion in Finland : Students, teachers, and parents as key actors
2022
Abstract This retrospective review applies a language socialisation perspective in examining the findings of a four-year research project on Swedish immersion in Finland. Findings from nine sub-studies within the project are reported with a point-of-view from three key actors’ (teachers, students, and parents) language socialisation processes. Results show that a special feature of immersion teacher socialisation is its continuous attention toward the additive multilingual nature of immersion education, which requires sustained attention to multilingual language use and development. Students in Swedish immersion are socialised into the use of multiple languages in school and act as socialis…
Minä sairaanhoitajana: tulevaisuuden minuudet motivaatiota muokkaamassa
2013
Ulkomaalaisen terveydenhoitoalan henkiloston ammatillinen kielitaito on herattanyt julkista keskustelua Suomessa, mutta alalle kouluttautuvat maahanmuuttajataustaiset opiskelijat kielitaitoineen ovat olleet vasta vain tieteellisen keskustelun kohteena. Tassa artikkelissa tarkastelen, mita odotuksia Suomessa englanninkielisessa koulutusohjelmassa sairaanhoitajiksi opiskelevilla maahanmuuttajilla on kielitaidostaan ja tulevaisuudestaan ja kuinka odotukset nakyvat motivoituneisuutena tyoharjoitteluissa. Motivaatiota lahestytaan kompleksisena, identiteettiin nivoutuvana ilmiona, jonka ytimessa on toimijuus. Tutkimus sijoittuu sosiokognitiiviseen viitekehykseen, jossa kieli ja motivaatio nahdaan…

Children show right-lateralized effects of spoken word-form learning
2017
It is commonly thought that phonological learning is different in young children compared to adults, possibly due to the speech processing system not yet having reached full native-language specialization. However, the neurocognitive mechanisms of phonological learning in children are poorly understood. We employed magnetoencephalography (MEG) to track cortical correlates of incidental learning of meaningless word forms over two days as 6±8-year-olds overtly repeated them. Native (Finnish) pseudowords were compared with words of foreign sound structure (Korean) to investigate whether the cortical learning effects would be more dependent on previous proficiency in the language rather than ma…
Understanding developmental language disorder-The Helsinki longitudinal SLI study (HelSLI): A study protocol
2018
Background Developmental language disorder (DLD, also called specific language impairment, SLI) is a common developmental disorder comprising the largest disability group in pre-school-aged children. Approximately 7% of the population is expected to have developmental language difficulties. However, the specific etiological factors leading to DLD are not yet known and even the typical linguistic features appear to vary by language. We present here a project that investigates DLD at multiple levels of analysis and aims to make the reliable prediction and early identification of the difficulties possible. Following the multiple deficit model of developmental disorders, we investigate the DLD …
Proactive and reactive dimensions of life-course agency: mapping student teachers’ language learning experiences
2014
Although the concept of agency has received a lot of interest in recent educational research, its significance in language learning biographies as well as contextual and relational aspects of learner agency are still little studied. This paper aims at a more thorough understanding of agency by studying student teachers’ previous language learning experiences. This paper is based on a dialogical analysis of 12 student teachers’ biographical essays describing their relationship with English as a foreign language. The participants are students in a Finnish class teacher and language teacher education programme that uses English as the primary medium of instruction. The study proposes a tripart…
Yhdessä opettaen ja oppien : mitä opettajat kokivat oppineensa yhteisopetuksen aikana?
2014
Tämä tutkimus käsittelee yhteisopetuksen opettajille tarjoamia oppimismahdollisuuksia. Tutkimuskysymyksemme on: Mitä opettajat kokivat oppineensa yhteisopetuksen aikana?
Factors promoting vocational students’ learning at work: study on student experiences
2012
In order to promote effective pedagogical practices for students’ work-based learning, we need to understand better how students’ learning at work can be supported. This paper examines the factors explaining students’ workplace learning (WPL) outcomes, addressing three aspects: (1) student-related individual factors, (2) social and structural features of workplace and (3) educational practices related to the organising of WPL periods. The data were collected from final-year vocational students (N = 3106, n = 1603) via an Internet questionnaire. The findings from regression analysis showed that students’ WPL outcomes cannot be seen merely as consequences of student-related individual factors…
