Haven on Earth? Dynamic Connections between Gold and Stock Markets in Turbulent Times

2017

We find that exogenous structural shocks caused by terrorist attacks, wars, political turmoil and gold market specific events have a strong role to play in the analysis of dynamic relationships between gold and stock market returns. Our main finding is that the interaction between the gold market and stock market is much tighter than previously observed. Especially some of the gold market specific shocks have long lasting impacts also on the financial markets. Also some events, which may have been miss-interpreted as minor shocks previously, have in fact had significant impacts on both stock and gold markets. Furthermore, the dynamic correlations between all the analyzed financial sectors i…

A Growing Sector After the Impact of the Great Recession in Spain

2020

In Spain, fitness has developed into a sector that offers a series of services associated with an active and healthy lifestyle for the body transformation, recreation and physical exercise of its users. This chapter examines the evolution of fitness in Spain parallel to the changes in the population’s sports habits. The study examines the popularity of fitness and its position in the Spanish sports system and the organisational and economic characteristics of the sector (main operators, types of gyms, activities offered, infrastructures, employment, membership fees, revenues), as well as the sociodemographic profile of the practitioners. To do so, a large number of studies and reports carri…

Purchasing natural personal care products in the era of fake news? The moderation effect of brand trust

2021

Natural personal care products are gaining popularity due to their benefits in terms of health and well-being. However, consumers are wary of these products and are guided by the fake news circulating about them. Since natural product consumption offers several personal and environmental benefits, it would be worthwhile to understand consumers’ tendency to let fake news influence their consumption decisions. Accordingly, the current study examined the association of fake news and purchasing behaviour towards natural personal care products, utilising Stimulus-Organism-Behaviour-Consequence (SOBC) as the theoretical framework. The study proposed openness to change as the stimulus, perceived b…

What drives brand love and purchase intentions toward the local food distribution system? A study of social media-based REKO (fair consumption) groups

2021

Local food is gaining increasing popularity among consumers due to its association with sustainable consumption. However, for a product to be commercially successful, such growing popularity should translate into high purchase intentions and positive associations with the product post-consumption. Although this success has not yet been reflected for local food consumption, research in this area has remained limited. The present study addresses this gap by examining the antecedents of brand love for both the local food distribution system and the local food it distributes. The study thus employs the stimuli-organism-response (SOR) theory, which indicates that certain environmental stimuli in…

Individualized evaluation of health cost and health risks

2019

Abstract This paper presents an individualized evaluation of the health costs and health risks of haze pollution by conduction channels and conduction strengths. Ordinal probit model and quantile regression are used to analyze data on individuals in Hangzhou, an environmental friendly city in China. The analyses yield four findings. First, in Hangzhou, haze pollution increases citizens' health spending by >2.49 billion US dollars. Second, health costs are mainly driven by increased risks of respiratory infection. Third, the quantile analysis of health risks shows the conduction channels and corresponding strengths vary for different population groups by age and health status. Lastly, respon…

Effect of price increases on future intentions of sport consumers

2014

This work analyzes the relationships between perceived value, satisfaction and future intentions among users of a public sport service who experience a price increase in the service they receive. A self-administered survey provides data from two samples (before and after the service price increase). After confirming the reliability and validity of the measures, hierarchical multiple regression provides the means for analyzing the data. The results show that the increase in the service price worsens the perception of service performance. As expected, satisfaction, perceived value and future intentions decrease following an increase in the service price. Perceived value also serves as a more …

Endorser age and stereotypes: Consequences on brand age

2013

Abstract This paper links findings from research on different age types to branding literature, and adds insight into how to rejuvenate a brand through the use of endorsers in advertisements. The article addresses the yet under-represented value of demographic characteristics of endorsers in affecting brand perception, and introduces the importance of the existence and strength of individual mental images of typical brand users in the process of such association transfers. Based on theoretical perspectives from personality transfer, (social) categorization, imagery, and advertising literature, the study proposes and tests several conditions for which age association transfer from endorser t…

Energetically costly precopulatory mate guarding in the amphipod Gammarus pulex: causes and consequences

2003

Precopulatory mate guarding (PCMG) is thought to have evolved as a male mating strategy in species in which female receptivity is limited to a short time. It is common among crustaceans, and energetic costs associated with PCMG are thought to promote size-assortative pairing in such species, although direct evidence is lacking. Using both field surveys and laboratory experiments, we assessed the energetic costs of PCMG in Gammarus pulex and investigated their possible causes. Energetic costs were measured as differences in lipid and glycogen reserves. In field-collected samples, size-corrected lipid and glycogen reserves of paired males were both significantly higher than those of unpaired …

Photocatalytic degradation enhancement in pickering emulsions stabilized by solid particles of bare TiO 2

2019

Pickering emulsions provide a new way to enhance the efficiency of photocatalytic degradation of water-insoluble pollutants. Indeed, the semiconductor solid particles dually act as the photocatalyst and stabilizer of the emulsion droplets whose size dramatically affects the photocatalytic reaction. The present work aims at the validation of this concept by using bare TiO 2 without any surface modification. Nanostructured TiO 2 has been prepared by a simple sol-gel process and characterized by X-ray diffraction, specific surface area analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The emulsions were prepared by using 1-methylnaphthalene (1-MN) as a model organic…
