Empowering New Agents of Civil Society or Fostering Good Citizens? : Framing Youth Participation in Finnish Youth Organizations
2018
This article investigates how nationwide Finnish youth civil society organizations frame their approaches to youth participation. By analyzing data from interviews, websites, and annual reports, five frames are identified. The frames differ in how they define the purpose of participation, whom they see as the main actors, and what kind of member, volunteer, or other participant roles they provide to young people. Three frames are used as master frames that see young people as agents, learners, or targets of support; two subordinate frames expand the scopes of the organizations. Only some of the frames include any concept of integrating young people into the civil society. peerReviewed

International comparative assessments of learning outcomes in basic and tertiary education International assessments of learning outcomes have rapidly increased over the last two decades, especially as a consequence of PISA studies. There are now international comparative studies of learning outcomes ranging from basic to tertiary and adult education. The purpose of the present article is to describe the history and background of international comparative assessments with particular respect to two OECD assessments: PISA and AHELO. We argue that educational policy, pedagogical and scientific interests exert influence on international comparative assessments. These different interests promote…

Pro gradu -tutkielmassani tarkastelen suomalaisten ja intialaisten kehitysyhteistyöjärjestöjen yhteisen kehitysyhteistyöhankkeen ympärille muodostunutta yhteistyötä eli kumppanuutta. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on ymmärtää kumppanuuden muodostumiseen, ylläpitoon ja lopettamiseen vaikuttavia tekijöitä. Tutkimuksessa tuodaan esille suomalaisten vapaaehtoisten kertomuksia, kokemuksia ja havaintoja muun muassa uuden kumppanijärjestön valintakriteereistä, järjestöjen välisestä työnjaosta, hankesyklin eri vaiheissa kohdatuista haasteista sekä vastuuvelvollisuuden ja luotettavuuden merkityksestä kumppanuudessa. Tutkimuksen empiirinen aineisto koostuu kuuden informantin etnografisista puolistrukturoi…
Economic burden of low physical activity and high sedentary behaviour in Finland
2022
BackgroundLow physical activity and high sedentary behaviour are unquestionably relevant for public health while also increasing direct and indirect costs.MethodsThe authors examined the direct and indirect costs attributable to low physical activity and high sedentary behaviour in Finland in 2017. Costs related to major non-communicable diseases drawn from Finnish registries covered direct costs (outpatient visits, days of inpatient care, medication and institutional eldercare) and indirect costs (sickness-related absences, disability pensions, unemployment benefits, all-cause mortality and losses of income tax revenue). Prevalences of low physical activity and high sedentary behaviour (≥8…
Immunoaffinity purification and characterization of mitochondrial membrane-bound D-3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase from Jaculus orientalis.
2008
Abstract Background The interconversion of two important energy metabolites, 3-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate (the major ketone bodies), is catalyzed by D-3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (BDH1: EC 1.1.1.30), a NAD+-dependent enzyme. The eukaryotic enzyme is bound to the mitochondrial inner membrane and harbors a unique lecithin-dependent activity. Here, we report an advanced purification method of the mammalian BDH applied to the liver enzyme from jerboa (Jaculus orientalis), a hibernating rodent adapted to extreme diet and environmental conditions. Results Purifying BDH from jerboa liver overcomes its low specific activity in mitochondria for further biochemical characterization of the e…
The Role of Emotions and Motivations in Sport Organizations
2020
In sport organizations, a stance aimed at creating a positive emotional and social climate may be necessary. This study examines athletes' individual psychosocial factors that are linked to sports practice and sports performance. These factors include individual motivation, emotions, and beliefs. The main objective is to create a hierarchy of emotional and motivational factors that sport organizations can use to increase athletes' commitment. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to do so. This method enables analysis of priorities and criteria to support decision-making. The results show that motivation, defined here as the drive that leads individuals to develop plans to achieve th…
A focused ultrasound treatment system for moving targets (part I): generic system design and in-silico first-stage evaluation
2017
Abstract Background Focused ultrasound (FUS) is entering clinical routine as a treatment option. Currently, no clinically available FUS treatment system features automated respiratory motion compensation. The required quality standards make developing such a system challenging. Methods A novel FUS treatment system with motion compensation is described, developed with the goal of clinical use. The system comprises a clinically available MR device and FUS transducer system. The controller is very generic and could use any suitable MR or FUS device. MR image sequences (echo planar imaging) are acquired for both motion observation and thermometry. Based on anatomical feature tracking, motion pr…
Football clubs ownership and management. The fans perspective. [Propiedad y gestión de los clubes de fútbol. La perspectiva de los aficionados].

The changes that have taken place in the ownership and management of the clubs are examined from the point of view of the fans, as well as the consequences that these changes have had in their relation with the clubs. Following the presentation of the process that led to the transformation of the Spanish clubs of football in public limited sports companies, the main results of a qualitative research with 25 football fan…
Leadership as an enabler of professional agency and creativity : case studies from the Finnish information technology sector
2018
This paper summarizes and elaborates the findings of a research project on leadership as an enabler of professional agency and creativity in information technology organizations.
