Conversion of peat and coal nitrogen through HCN and NH3 to nitrogen oxides at 800 °C

The conversion of fuel nitrogen through HCN and NH3 to nitrogen oxides (N2O, NO and NO2) was studied using an entrained-flow reactor at 800 °C with one coal and four peats at 5 and 1% O2. The ON ratios of the fuels were between 7 and 20. A clear dependence was found between the HCNNH3 ratio measured just after the vigorous pyrolysis step and the N2ONO ratio in the flue gas when these were plotted as a function of the initial ON ratio of the fuel.

Electronic and magnetic properties of VOCl/FeOCl antiferromagnetic heterobilayers

We study the electronic properties of the heterobilayer of vanadium and iron oxychlorides, VOCl and FeOCl, two layered air stable van der Waals insulating oxides with different types of antiferromagnetic order in bulk: VOCl monolayers are ferromagnetic (FM) whereas the FeOCl monolayers are antiferromagnetic (AF). We use density functional theory (DFT) calculations, with Hubbard correction that is found to be needed to describe correctly the insulating nature of these compounds. We compute the magnetic anisotropy and propose a spin model Hamiltonian. Low-cost materials for boron adsorption from water

[EN] Knowing the affinity of boron aqueous species for cis-diol organic groups, five different hybrid materials have been prepared by anchoring glucose groups onto the surface of silica matrices with a different surface topology: UVM-7 bimodal mesoporous silica, UVM-11 unimodal non-templated mesoporous silica, commercial silica fume and two silica xerogels with pores within the mesoporous range (13-50 nm). Improved Photocatalytic Activity of Polysiloxane TiO2 Composites by Thermally Induced Nanoparticle Bulk Clustering and Dye Adsorption

Fine control of nanoparticle clustering within polymeric matrices can be tuned to enhance the physicochemical properties of the resulting composites, which are governed by the interplay of nanoparticle surface segregation and bulk clustering. To this aim, out-of-equilibrium strategies can be leveraged to program the multiscale organization of such systems. Dinitrosyl-iron triggers apoptosis in Jurkat cells despite overexpression of Bcl-2

Cells expressing the cytokine-inducible NO synthase are known to trigger apoptosis in neighboring cells. Paramagnetic dinitrosyl nonheme iron complexes (DNIC) were found in tumor tissue about 40 years ago; however, the role of these NO(+)-bearing species is not completely understood. In the human Jurkat leukemia cell line, the application of the model complex DNIC-thiosulfate (50-200 microM) induced apoptosis (defined by phosphatidylserine externalization) in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. Nano-Oxides produced by ns laser ablation in liquids

2014

Laser ablation in liquids was successfully applied to produce nanosized oxides from Si, Ti and Zn targets. The obtained colloidal solutions of nanoparticles were investigated by complementary techniques: AFM, IR and Raman spectroscopies; optical absorption and time resolved photoluminescence. The results demonstrate the production of SiO2, TiO2 and ZnO. The absorption and emission properties of these material have been also investigated and appear to be promising for optical applications.

Abstract Dust emission and deposition in topsoil have negative effect on individual components of the ecosystem. In addition to routine geochemical analyses, magnetic measurements may provide useful complementary information related to the type, concentration and grain-size distribution of the technogenic magnetic particles (TMPs) and thus the degree of contamination of the environment.
