Interrogation of genomes by molecular copy-number counting (MCC)

2006

Human cancers and some congenital traits are characterized by cytogenetic aberrations including translocations, amplifications, duplications or deletions that can involve gain or loss of genetic material. We have developed a simple method to precisely delineate such regions with known or cryptic genomic alterations. Molecular copy-number counting (MCC) uses PCR to interrogate miniscule amounts of genomic DNA and allows progressive delineation of DNA content to within a few hundred base pairs of a genomic alteration. As an example, we have located the junctions of a recurrent nonreciprocal translocation between chromosomes 3 and 5 in human renal cell carcinoma, facilitating cloning of the br…

MultiROMs and Online Applications Used for Teaching Phonetics in a Secondary School: A Critical Review

2012

The aim of the article is to evaluate the quality of the materials used to teach pronunciation in a Polish secondary school. Although the analysis covers all kinds of aids available for teachers, including a coursebook accompanied by a CD, the authors focus mainly on MultiROMs and online resources connected with a given book. The findings allow the authors to conclude which coursebook sets seem to be most effective in shaping students’ pronunciation and which exercises are most helpful, taking into consideration the level of students’ English. Additionally, the authors’ idea was to check whether these books take into consideration the aspects of pronunciation which prove to be especially di…

Direct observation of second-order atom tunnelling

2007

Tunnelling of material particles through a classically impenetrable barrier constitutes one of the hallmark effects of quantum physics. When interactions between the particles compete with their mobility through a tunnel junction, intriguing novel dynamical behaviour can arise where particles do not tunnel independently. In single-electron or Bloch transistors, for example, the tunnelling of an electron or Cooper pair can be enabled or suppressed by the presence of a second charge carrier due to Coulomb blockade. Here we report on the first direct and time-resolved observation of correlated tunnelling of two interacting atoms through a barrier in a double well potential. We show that for we…

The transient gravitational-wave sky

2013

Interferometric detectors will very soon give us an unprecedented view of the gravitational-wave sky, and in particular of the explosive and transient Universe. Now is the time to challenge our theoretical understanding of short-duration gravitational-wave signatures from cataclysmic events, their connection to more traditional electromagnetic and particle astrophysics, and the data analysis techniques that will make the observations a reality. This paper summarizes the state of the art, future science opportunities, and current challenges in understanding gravitational-wave transients.

COMMUNICATION. OBSERVATIONS ON THE 121-Sb MÖSSBAUER PARAMETERS OF ANTIMONY (III) COMPOUNDS FEATURING A PYRAMIDAL SbS3SKELETAL UNIT

1991

Abstract A linear correlation between the chemical isomer shift and the quadrupole coupling constant for a number of antimony tris-thiolates has been evidenced. This behaviour can be rationalized on considering a modulation of the s/p character of the lone pair of electrons from the influence of secondary bonds.

Synthesis, spectroscopic and conformational analysis of 1,4-dihydroisonicotinic acid derivatives

2014

Abstract Structural and conformational properties of 1,4-dihydroisonicotinic acid derivatives, characterized by ester, ketone or cyano functions at positions 3 and 5 in solid and liquid states have been investigated by X-ray analysis and nuclear magnetic resonance and supported by quantum chemical calculations. The dihydropyridine ring in each of the compounds exists in flattened boat-type conformation. The observed ring distortions around the C(4) and N(1) atoms are interrelated. The substituent at N(1) has great influence on nitrogen atom pyramidality. The 1H, 13C and 15N NMR chemical shifts and coupling constants are discussed in terms of their relationship to structural features such as…

MICRODISSECTION AND DOP-PCR-BASED REVERSE CHROMOSOME PAINTING AS A FAST AND RELIABLE STRATEGY IN THE ANALYSIS OF VARIOUS STRUCTURAL CHROMOSOME ABNORM…

1996

Reverse chromosome painting has become a powerful tool in clinical genetics for the characterization of cytogenetically unclassifiable aberrations. In this report, the application of a sensitive and rapid procedure for the complete and precise identification of four different de novo structural chromosome abnormalities is presented. These chromosome rearrangements include a marker derived from chromosome 3(cen-q11), an interstitial deletion of chromosome 13 [del(13)(q14q22)], an unbalanced translocation [46,XY, -4, +der(4)t(4;8)(p 15.2;p21.1)] leading to Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome, and a partial inverted duplication in conjunction with a partial deletion of chromosome 5p [46,XX, -5, +der(5)(:…

Infliximab and newly diagnosed neoplasia in CD:a multicenter matched pair study

2006

Background and aims: The widespread use of anti-tumour necrosis factor α antibody (Infliximab) in Crohn's disease (CD) raises concerns about a possible cancer risk in the long term. In a matched pair study, we assessed whether Infliximab is associated with an increased risk of neoplasia. Methods: In a multicentre matched pair study, 404 CD patients treated with Infliximab (CD-IFX) were matched with 404 CD patients who had never received Infliximab (CD-C). Cases and controls were matched for sex, age (±5 years), site of CD, age at diagnosis (±5 years), immunosuppressant use, and follow up. New diagnoses of neoplasia from April 1999 to October 2004 were recorded. Results: Among the 404 CD-IFX…

Kinetic control in the chiral recognition of three-bladed propellers

2010

The ion pair of the stereolabile C(3)-symmetric, i(+)o proton complex [1H](+) of diaza-macropentacycle 1 and the configurationally stable Delta-TRISPHAT ([Delta-3](-)) anion exists in the form of two diastereomers, namely, [Delta-(1.H)][Delta-3] and [Lambda-(1.H)][Delta-3], the ratio of which, in terms of diastereomeric excess (de) decreases in the order [D(8)]THF (28%)CD(2)Cl(2) (22%)CDCl(3) (20%)[D(8)]toluene (16%)C(6)D(6) (7%)[D(6)]acetone (0%) at thermodynamic equilibrium. Except in the case of [D(6)]acetone, the latter is reached after a period of time that increases from 1 h ([D(8)]THF) to 24 h (CDCl(3)). Moreover, the initial value of the de of [1.H][Delta-3] in CDCl(3), before the t…
