Hybrid surface plasma modes in circular metal-coated tapered fibers
1999
The theory of hybrid surface plasma modes in metal-coated dielectric cylinders has been developed in recent years. We demonstrate that tapered fibers with a uniform waist and a circular metal coating can be designed for an efficient excitation of the fundamental hybrid surface plasma mode. Our experimental results are in good agreement with the theory and give the basis for the development of a novel type of all-fiber polarization-independent refractive-index sensor and tunable broadband wavelength filter.
Gyrification from constrained cortical expansion
2014
The exterior of the mammalian brain - the cerebral cortex - has a conserved layered structure whose thickness varies little across species. However, selection pressures over evolutionary time scales have led to cortices that have a large surface area to volume ratio in some organisms, with the result that the brain is strongly convoluted into sulci and gyri. Here we show that the gyrification can arise as a nonlinear consequence of a simple mechanical instability driven by tangential expansion of the gray matter constrained by the white matter. A physical mimic of the process using a layered swelling gel captures the essence of the mechanism, and numerical simulations of the brain treated a…
Segment polarity and DV patterning gene expression reveals segmental organization of theDrosophilabrain
2003
The insect brain is traditionally subdivided into the trito-, deuto- and protocerebrum. However, both the neuromeric status and the course of the borders between these regions are unclear. The Drosophila embryonic brain develops from the procephalic neurogenic region of the ectoderm, which gives rise to a bilaterally symmetrical array of about 100 neuronal precursor cells, called neuroblasts. Based on a detailed description of the spatiotemporal development of the entire population of embryonic brain neuroblasts, we carried out a comprehensive analysis of the expression of segment polarity genes (engrailed, wingless, hedgehog, gooseberry distal, mirror) and DV patterning genes (muscle segmen…
Metallothionein Gene Family in the Sea Urchin Paracentrotus lividus: Gene Structure, Differential Expression and Phylogenetic Analysis
2017
Metallothioneins (MT) are small and cysteine-rich proteins that bind metal ions such as zinc, copper, cadmium, and nickel. In order to shed some light on MT gene structure and evolution, we cloned seven Paracentrotus lividus MT genes, comparing them to Echinodermata and Chordata genes. Moreover, we performed a phylogenetic analysis of 32 MTs from different classes of echinoderms and 13 MTs from the most ancient chordates, highlighting the relationships between them. Since MTs have multiple roles in the cells, we performed RT-qPCR and in situ hybridization experiments to understand better MT functions in sea urchin embryos. Results showed that the expression of MTs is regulated throughout de…
Il ruolo della memoria normanna nella cultura architettonica siciliana della prima età moderna
2021
The Norman domination in Sicily in the eleventh and twelfth centuries can be considered a pivotal point in the history of the island, regarding its influence in subsequent cultural, ideological and political memory. After centuries of the Muslim domination, the Hauteville (italianized Altavilla) dynasty took the role of the founding fathers of a Christian, monarchist, independent kingdom at the origin of the socio-economical structure of feudal-gentry-based Sicily. The intent of this paper is to shine a light on how the historical memory of the Normans influenced the affirmation of classical culture in Early Modern Sicily. Between the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the se…
Clinician-related factors behind the decision to extract an asymptomatic lower third molar. A cross-sectional study based on Spanish and Portuguese d…
2017
Background: Scientific literature estimates that around 18 to 40 % of asymptomatic third molars are extracted. The aims of the present study were to determine the indications for extraction of asymptomatic lower third molars in a sample of Spanish and Portuguese dentists, and to relate these indications to the clinicians’ training and professional experience. Material and Methods: A survey consisting of 15 cases of asymptomatic lower third molars was emailed to Portuguese and Spanish dentists. The clinicians were asked to assess the level of difficulty of the extractions and to make a reasoned recommendation based on the panoramic radiographs, gender and age of the patients. Results: 381 cl…
Micelles, Rods, Liposomes, and Other Supramolecular Surfactant Aggregates: Computational Approaches
2017
Surfactants are an interesting class of compounds characterized by the segregation of polar and apolar domains in the same molecule. This peculiarity makes possible a whole series of microscopic and macroscopic effects. Among their features, their ability to segregate particles (fluids or entire domains) and to reduce the surface/interfacial tension is the utmost important. The interest in the chemistry of surfactants never weakened; instead, waves of increasing interest have occurred every time a new field of application of these molecules has been discovered. All these special characteristics depend largely on the ability of surfactants to self-assemble and constitute supramolecular struc…
Catalan Morphology and Low-level Patterns in a Network Model
2005
The fact that more specific or low-level morphological patterns may coexist with the most general or abstract ones is a characteristic insight of Cognitive Morphology. According to the bottom-up approach of the model, it is even to be expected that low-level patterns may have a more relevant role than the most inclusive and abstract ones. On the basis of the analysis of an aspect of Catalan inflection (velar verbs of the second conjugation) and one aspect of Catalan word-formation (complex words with the prefixoid radio-), we will show the advantages of incorporating to the model salient low-level patterns and the local paradigmatic relations in which they are based. info:eu-repo/semantics/…

Optimal extraction of motif patterns in 2D
2009
The combinatorial explosion of motif patterns occurring in 1D and 2D arrays leads to the consideration of special classes of motifs growing linearly with the size of the input array. Such motifs, called irredundant motifs, are able to succinctly represent all of the other motifs occurring in the same array within reasonable time and space bounds. In previous work irredundant motifs were extracted from 2D arrays in O (N 2 log 2 n log log n) and O (N 3) time, where N is the size of the 2D input array and n is its largest dimension. In this paper, we present an algorithm to extract irredundant motifs from 2D arrays that is quadratic in the size of the input. The input is defined on a binary al…
