Multivariate Statistical Analysis for Water Demand Modeling

The actual level of water demand is the driving force behind the hydraulic dynamics in water distribution systems. Consequently, it is crucial to estimate it as accurately as possible in order to result in reliable simulation models. In this paper, a copula-based multivariate analysis has been proposed and used for demand prediction for given return period. The analysis is applied to water consumption data collected in the water distribution network of Palermo (Italy). The approach showed to produce consisted demand patterns and to be a powerful tool to be coupled with water distribution network models for design or analysis problems. A modified moiré technique for three-dimensional surface topography

In this paper we present an optical technique based on the shadow moire method which allows the measurement and digitization of three-dimensional surfaces. The technique was tested through experimental work and the results were compared with those obtained by a coordinate measuring machine. Moving from the conventional shadow moire method, new features were implemented enabling us to overcome the main shortcomings of the conventional moire method. These include the need to assign the fringe order, the incapability of discerning concavity or convexity, the poor resolution and the complexity in the signal processing. Models of mate sampling strategies predict that choosiness should decrease throughout the breeding season due to increasing costs of delaying mating. Therefore, individuals who start searching mates relatively late, should spend less time on sampling, and sample fewer candidates compared to early individuals. We observed mate searching behavior of female pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca) by radio-tracking in study areas with 6–12 unpaired males. Contrary to the prediction, the observed numbers of males sampled by the searching females increased with time, i.e. late arriving females visited more males than early arrivers. Scale detection via keypoint density maps in regular or near-regular textures

In this paper we propose a new method to detect the global scale of images with regular, near regular, or homogenous textures. We define texture ''scale'' as the size of the basic elements (texels or textons) that most frequently occur into the image. We study the distribution of the interest points into the image, at different scale, by using our Keypoint Density Maps (KDMs) tool. A ''mode'' vector is built computing the most frequent values (modes) of the KDMs, at different scales. We observed that the mode vector is quasi linear with the scale. A Mlp-Based Digit And Uppercase Characters Recognition System

A simple software solution for digit and uppercase handwritten characters recognition is presented. The proposed solution is based on a two-layer Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP) trained by a conjugate gradient descent (CGD) optimization algorithm. This neural network is embedded in a software tool for automatic processing of forms achieved using a scanner. The chosen solutions allow us to obtain good results both in terms of recognition rate and speed. In the paper are fully described design details and experimental results.
