Improving the k-NCN classification rule through heuristic modifications

Abstract This paper presents an empirical investigation of the recently proposed k-Nearest Centroid Neighbours ( k -NCN) classification rule along with two heuristic modifications of it. These alternatives make use of both proximity and geometrical distribution of the prototypes in the training set in order to estimate the class label of a given sample. The experimental results show that both alternatives give significantly better classification rates than the k -Nearest Neighbours rule, basically due to the properties of the plain k -NCN technique.

Conceptual representations of actions for autonomous robots

An autonomous robot involved in long and complex missions should be able to generate, update and process its own plans of action. In this perspective, it is not plausible that the meaning of the representations used by the robot is given from outside the system itself. Rather, the meaning of internal symbols must be firmly anchored to the world through the perceptual abilities and the overall activities of the robot. According to these premises, in this paper we present an approach to action representation that is based on a "conceptual" level of representation, acting as an intermediate level between symbols and data coming from sensors. Anchoring symbols to conceptual spaces: the case of dynamic scenarios.

In recent years, there have been several proposals for the realization of models inspired to biological solutions for pattern recognition. In this work we propose a new approach, based on a hierarchical modular structure, to realize a system capable to learn by examples and recognize objects in digital images. The adopted techniques are based on multiresolution image analysis and neural networks. Performance on two different data sets and experimental timings on a single instruction multiple data (SIMD) machine are also reported.

Rural-cultural excursion conceptualization: A local tourism marketing management model based on tourist destination image measurement

Abstract Excursions to small, rural villages rich with historical heritage and architectural harmony are popular in Spain and other similar countries. This study presents a conceptualization and definition of this sort of tourism in rural-cultural destinations. In addition, it introduces a combination of variables that define the image of the destination, the characteristics of these types of trips, and characteristics of the rural-cultural tourist. Parallelization of Cellular Automata for Surface Reactions

We present a parallel implementation of cellular automata to simulate chemical reactions on surfaces. The scaling of the computer time with the number of processors for this parallel implementation is quite close to the ideal T/P, where T is the computer time used for one single processor and P the number of processors. Two examples are presented to test the algorithm, the simple A+B->0 model and a realistic model for CO oxidation on Pt(110). By using large parallel simulations, it is possible to derive scaling laws which allow us to extrapolate to even larger system sizes and faster diffusion coefficients allowing us to make direct comparisons with experiments.

Patterning and tuning of electrical and optical properties of graphene by laser induced two-photon oxidation

Graphene, being an ultrathin, durable, flexible, transparent material with superior conductivity and unusual optical properties, promises many novel applications in electronics, photonics and optoelectronics. For applications in electronics, patterning and modification of electrical properties is very desirable since pristine graphene has no band gap. Here we demonstrate a simple all-optical patterning method for graphene, based on laser induced two-photon oxidation. Statistical Reconstruction of Microstructures Using Entropic Descriptors

We report a multiscale approach of broad applicability to stochastic reconstruction of multiphase materials, including porous ones. The approach devised uses an optimization method, such as the simulated annealing (SA) and the so-called entropic descriptors (EDs). For a binary pattern, they quantify spatial inhomogeneity or statistical complexity at discrete length-scales. The EDs extract dissimilar structural information to that given by two-point correlation functions (CFs). Maxwell's equations approach to soliton excitations of surface plasmonic resonances

We demonstrate that soliton-plasmon bound states appear naturally as propagating eigenmodes of nonlinear Maxwell's equations for a metal/dielectric/Kerr interface. By means of a variational method, we give an explicit and simplified expression for the full-vector nonlinear operator of the system. Soliplasmon states (propagating surface soliton-plasmon modes) can be then analytically calculated as eigenmodes of this non-selfadjoint operator. Alignment of cone beam computed tomography data using intra-oral fiducial markers.

This article illustrates a new method to align and merge two partially overlapping volumes each of them generated by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The aggregate volume covers a larger area of investigation and is determined by localizing one fixed LEGO brick in both of the primal volumes. Based on the LEGO brick an approximate registration of the volumes is determined. Afterwards we improve the transformation by minimizing the difference in overlapping space. In this paper we present a method which automates these two steps and provides an aligned volume.
