The Critical Potential of John Elliott’s Liberal Pedagogy
2016
This chapter will continue to explore the difficult balance that, as shown in the previous one, held together the content and process dimensions of social democracy’s and Freire’s pedagogical projects. The same balance will now be approached from the standpoint of the liberal tradition, which provides critical pedagogy with one of the poles of the relationship that this book identifies at the heart of its success. John Elliott’s work on pedagogy and educational action research has been chosen for this purpose. From the early 1970s, when he started writing, to the beginning of this new century, the world has undergone important material and ideological transformations that I believe can be p…
“Fake it ‘til you make it”: The designer playground for crafting prototypes, orchestrating frauds and pushing the ecological transition
2022
In the past thirty years, there has been a radical change in almost every business sector: companies nowadays offer increasingly complete packages or “bundles,” i.e-, combinations of goods, services, assistance, self-service and customer-focused knowledge. But it is services that have the lion’s share. In this context, those involved in the servitization process, such as designers, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists, seem to focus more and more on the customer experience than on enabling technology. This has led to the birth of many successful new companies as well as to financial scandals. The aim of this article is to understand how the “fake ’til you make it” approach in design and b…

Pedagogika katolicka – znaczenie i aktualność w kontekście chaosu wartości (perspektywa polska)
2017
Education cannot be reduced to information and should guarantee to the students and their parents the freedom of making axiological decisions and solutions. The above mentioned right is confimed by the right of parents to raise their children according to their own conceptions. In the contemporary chaos of values and principles of education the Catholic education remains a topical, interesting and important proposal for school.
Miłosierdzie jako istotna kategoria pedagogiki katolickiej
2017
Mercy - an important category of Catholic pedagogy God is the One who is present, close, holy, and merciful. An important task of every Christian is to recognise the merciful look of Jesus Christ. He is the only hope for sinful people. Mercy is the bridge that connects God and man, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness. Mercy is the fundamental idea of Catholic pedagogy: every Christian is called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to him. Pardoning offences becomes the clearest expression of merciful love, and for the Christians it is an imperative from which we cannot excuse oursełves. Jesus made mercy an ideał of life and a criterion fo…
Promoting Social and Political Change Through Pedagogy: Lorenzo Milani and the Barbiana School (Italy 1954–1967)
2015
This chapter describes the curriculum and pedagogy implemented at Barbiana, a small school in a remote and mountainous place in Italy. Still revered in Europe as one of the most interesting innovative teaching experiences, the school started in 1954 when Lorenzo Milani, a Catholic priest committed to work with the poor who had run an afterschool program in a working-class parish in an industrial city close to Florence, was sent to this location because of his leftist views. Milani believed that schools were class-based institutions that benefited bourgeois children and that excluded working-class and farmworker students. To reverse this situation, Milani contended that education for these s…
The Lecture-Performance: Implementing Performative Pedagogy in Literature Class
2020
In recent years the performative has gained importance within the pedagogical field and has opened new perspectives in educational research. Experience has shown that the integration of performative elements in the learning process allow teachers to involve learners emotionally and cognitively. The present paper deals with a learning experience performed with students in the course “German Literature (2nd language)” at the University of Valencia. From the perspective of Performative Pedagogy, students are asked to carry out a research project and then transfer the acquired knowledge to the theatrical format that must be didactic: a Lecture-Performance. This activity highlights the benefits …

Students supported the notion of “learning differently” and focused around prior learning and attitude to learning, learning about learning and impact of learning. Lecturers…
Learning paths on elementary university courses in Finnish as a second language
2015
Along with the growing degree of internationalisation, Finnish university education needs to address issues related to learning and teaching Finnish as a second language. From the perspective of teaching Finnish and related pedagogical development, it is essential to recognise when, where and for which purposes learners need Finnish at the various stages of the language acquisition process. This article focuses on the learning paths of three international students who studied Finnish on a one-term elementary course at the University of Jyvaskyla Language Centre. The article is based on a socio-cultural and ecological view on language learning and teaching. The data consist of learning diary…
