An LSP Framework for Translation and Interpreting Pedagogy
2021
In this article, we present a pedagogical framework for foreign language teaching in undergraduate translation and interpreting programmes. Within Translation Studies, many scholars support the idea that TILLT (Translation- and Interpreting-oriented Language Learning and Teaching) should be framed within the teaching of Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP), as students will use language as a professional tool in their professional lives. Based on insights from LSP research and practice, the area of Translation Studies dedicated to the development of language competence and expertise research, we have selected and described the key aspects for the development of professional language use in…
Indirect Sexism in John Grisham’s Sycamore Row (2013): Unveiling Sexual Inequality Through a Gender-Committed Pedagogy in the Translation Classroom
2019
In the ongoing fight for sexual equality, discourse and translation are key mechanisms, that deserve careful scrutiny. This chapter describes a teaching experience within my Legal Translation (English–Spanish) module at the University of Valencia. Students were required to translate some passages from Sycamore Row (2013), a best-selling legal thriller by John Grisham. In class, we analyzed and discussed these passages and compared them with the students’ translations as well as with the 2014commercial Spanish version, entitled La herencia. Sexist and/or patronizing comments are common in this book, disguised under the veil of irony or humour. Thus, John Grisham manages—through humour and ir…

Competences needed for the university faculty in view of pedagogy students
2015
Diverse evaluation of the study process and the activities of all participants involved in it is a significant element in the context of introducing quality culture at the higher education institutions (HEI). It is a common practice in HEI to carry out students’ surveys in order to receive students’ evaluation on the quality of the study process as such, the study curriculum, the content and organization of particular subjects. On the basis of the performed analysis of the scientific and didactic literature, the article describes students’ survey and the possibilities of applying its results in assessing the quality of the university faculty’s professional activities. The survey of pedagogy…
Proactive and reactive dimensions of life-course agency: mapping student teachers’ language learning experiences
2014
Although the concept of agency has received a lot of interest in recent educational research, its significance in language learning biographies as well as contextual and relational aspects of learner agency are still little studied. This paper aims at a more thorough understanding of agency by studying student teachers’ previous language learning experiences. This paper is based on a dialogical analysis of 12 student teachers’ biographical essays describing their relationship with English as a foreign language. The participants are students in a Finnish class teacher and language teacher education programme that uses English as the primary medium of instruction. The study proposes a tripart…
Pētījumā izmantota Bar-On EI noteikšanas metode vienotībā ar pedagoģisko vērojumu. Veikts eksperimentālais longitudālais darbības pētījums, iesaistot kontrolgrupu. Konstatēts, ka starpdisciplinārā netiešas iedarbības integratīvā metode, kas paredz autentisko, sinhrono, skatu…
