Design, Building up and First Results of Three Monitored Green Coverings Over a University Department Building

2015

Abstract A viable solution to reducing the buildings’ energy demand is the implementation of green coverings that have been demonstrated to improve the envelope performance, especially in summer season. Anyway, to apply computer models analyzing the energy performance of buildings equipped with such components, the knowledge of specific parameters is needed. Among these, the fractional vegetation coverage and leaf area index are of great importance. By means of an experimental facility, first results of the evaluation of these foliage-related parameters for five types of vegetation are presented.

Risk Indicators and Road Accident Analysis for the Period 2012–2016

2017

Road accidents are a major societal issue for every country. The purpose of this paper is to assess the number of traffic and road accidents depending on a series of variables (collision mode, road configuration, conditions of occurrence, road category, type of vehicle involved, personal factors, and length of time of the driving license) in Romania from 2012–2016. The analysis of the road accident trend identifies the causes of accidents, road safety performance indicators, and risk indicators. Having these identified data, a framework is proposed for improving the road safety system and reducing accidents. The Romanian Police, the National Institute of Statistics (NIS) in Romania, and the…

Robust Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) selection in LTE systems using reinforcement learning

2014

Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) in LTE networks is commonly employed to improve system throughput by ensuring more reliable transmissions. Most of existing AMC methods select the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) using pre-computed mappings between MCS indexes and channel quality indicator (CQI) feedbacks that are periodically sent by the receivers. However, the effectiveness of this approach heavily depends on the assumed channel model. In addition CQI feedback delays may cause throughput losses. In this paper we design a new AMC scheme that exploits a reinforcement learning algorithm to adjust at run-time the MCS selection rules based on the knowledge of the effect of previous AMC d…

Decentralized Synchronization for Zigbee wireless sensor networks in Multi-Hop Topology

2010

Abstract The most effective solution for energy saving in low-rate wireless sensor networks is maintaining each node in a doze state as long as possible. In order to guarantee network connectivity, the intervals at which the network sensors are turned on and off have to be coordinated. We analyze the Zigbee MAC performance in sensor networks deployed in multi-hop topologies. For this networks, critical inefficiencies can arise due to transmissions performed by hidden nodes. We evaluate the impact of different synchronization schemes on the network performance, both in terms of network capacity and in terms of energy consumption. We show how the synchronization function can be opportunistica…

A CARBON CONSTRAINED SOCIETY: THE ECONOMICS OF CARBON CAPTURE, UTILIZATION AND STORAGE

Traditionally carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions has been viewed and treated as a “bad” rather than a “good”. This mental model is of little surprise due to a well-established consensus on carbon dioxide as a pollutant constraining the sustainability of economic and social development at a global scale. In the world where so many actors are preoccupied with shifting towards a low- carbon economy the very idea of carbon dioxide being a commodity (literally and not in the form of carbon caps or quotas trade, in which case a “commodity” is in fact the right to emit carbon, which is in its essence a very different concept) might be a big of a statement. However, this idea is not a mere perspective …

Women as Key Agents in Sustainable Entrepreneurship: A Gender Multigroup Analysis of the SEO-Performance Relationship

2020

Literature points out that the effect of sustainable entrepreneurship on firm performance may be contingent on internal factors, such as top manager characteristics. This paper proposes that the gender of a firm&rsquo

Digital Transformation of Centru Region – Romania. Needs Assessment

2020

Abstract Competitiveness represents a never-ending moving target for any institution/entity, no matter the level of analysis (micro - companies /public administrations, mezzo - industries / national regions, or macro - countries / world regions); but its determinants (or key success factors) are changing, as ages go by, asking for continuous watch and strategic flexibility. With digital technology nowadays disrupting (almost) every aspect of human life, while framing a new age - of digitalization being both a source of competitiveness (for the industry leaders - whatever the “industry” might be), and (just) a prerequisite for survival (or doing business) for almost everyone else, the Europe…

Exploring Environmental and Entrepreneurial Antecedents of Social Performance in Spanish Sports Clubs: A Symmetric and Asymmetric Approach

2020

The social function of non-profit sports clubs is undeniable, so analyzing the factors that influence their performance is vital. The aim of this study is to understand the influence of entrepreneurial factors (entrepreneurial orientation) and environmental factors (dynamism, hostility and complexity) on social performance using a symmetrical (Hierarchical regression model) and asymmetrical (qualitative comparative analysis) approach. The social performance of this particular type of organization is of great importance in an environment where sustainability from a social point of view is increasingly on the agenda of governments, organizations and society in general. A total of 209 Spanish …

The performance of entrepreneurial small‐ and medium‐sized enterprises

2012

Innovation is an important driver of economic growth for it leads to new products and services, enhanced quality, and lower prices. In an increasingly competitive global market, innovation turns out to be essential to secure a viable competitive position. Although there is no perfect correspondence between accounting intangible assets and innovation activities, the association between these two concepts is close enough to take investment in intangible assets as a proxy for entrepreneurship and innovation. To identify differences between innovative and non‐innovative small and medium enterprises in the service industry, both descriptive and statistical analyses are performed on financial dat…
