Phenol profiling and nutraceutical potential of Lycium spp. Leaf extracts obtained with ultrasound and microwave assisted techniques

In recent years, agricultural and industrial residues have attracted a lot of interest in the recovery of phytochemicals used in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. In this paper, a study on the recovery of phenol compounds from Lycium spp. leaves is presented. Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) have been used with alcoholic and hydroalcoholic solvents. Methanolic UAE was the most successful technique for extracting phenols from Lycium leaves, and we used on leaves from L. barbarum and L. chinense cultivated in Italy. Alternariol-induced cytotoxicity in Caco-2 cells. Protective effect of the phenolic fraction from virgin olive oil.

The extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) has been associated to antioxidant effects. The mycotoxin alternariol (AOH) can contaminate olives. The aims of this work were to determine the cytotoxic effects and reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by AOH, tyrosol and oleuropein (two polyphenols of olive oil) and a real EVOO extract in Caco-2 cells. The MTT assay and the ROS production by the H2-DCFDA probe were used. Results demonstrated that AOH reduces cellular proliferation depending on concentration, whereas tyrosol and oleuropein did not (12.5-100 μM). The combination of AOH + oleuropein (50 μM) increased cell proliferation (24%) whereas, AOH + tyrosol decreased (47%) it. Besides, AOH increased…

One of the main olive oil phenolic compounds, hydroxytyrosol (3,4-DHPEA), exerts in vitro chemopreventive activities (antiproliferative and pro-apoptotic) on tumor cells through the accumulation of H2O2 in the culture medium. The CinPO2 is involved in innate immunity and is expressed by inflammatory hemocytes that populate the tunic and pharynx vessels as a response to LPS inoculation. This study focuses on the differences in total phenolic content and its seasonal variations in two temperate brown algae, Cystoseira amentacea (C. Agardh) Bory and Dictyopteris polypodioides (A.P. De Candolle) J.V. Lamouroux, inhabiting respectively the infralittoral fringe and the upper infralittoral zone. Contrasting temperature responses in seasonal timing of cercariae shedding by Rhipidocotyle trematodes

AbstractGlobal warming is likely to lengthen the seasonal duration of larval release by parasites. We exposed freshwater mussel hosts, Anodonta anatina, from 2 high-latitude populations to high, intermediate and low temperatures throughout the annual cercarial shedding period of the sympatric trematodes Rhipidocotyle fennica and R. campanula, sharing the same transmission pathway. At the individual host level, under warmer conditions, the timing of the cercarial release in both parasite species shifted towards seasonally earlier period while its duration did not change.
