The Isgur-Wise function from the lattice

We calculate the Isgur-Wise function by measuring the elastic scattering amplitude of a $D$ meson in the quenched approximation on a $24^3\times48$ lattice at $\beta=6.2$, using an $O(a)$-improved fermion action. Fitting the resulting chirally-extrapolated Isgur-Wise function to Stech's relativistic-oscillator parametrization, we obtain a slope parameter $\rho^2=1.2+7-3. We then use this result, in conjunction with heavy-quark symmetry, to extract $V_{cb}$\ from the experimentally measured $\bar B\to D^*l\bar\nu\,$\ differential decay width. We find $|V_{cb}|\sqrt{\tau_B/1.48{\mathrm ps}}= 0.038 +2-2 +8-3, where the first set of errors is due to experimental uncertainties, while the second …
Bayesian Analysis of a Future Beta Decay Experiment's Sensitivity to Neutrino Mass Scale and Ordering

Bayesian modeling techniques enable sensitivity analyses that incorporate detailed expectations regarding future experiments. A model-based approach also allows one to evaluate inferences and predicted outcomes, by calibrating (or measuring) the consequences incurred when certain results are reported. We present procedures for calibrating predictions of an experiment's sensitivity to both continuous and discrete parameters. Using these procedures and a new Bayesian model of the $\beta$-decay spectrum, we assess a high-precision $\beta$-decay experiment's sensitivity to the neutrino mass scale and ordering, for one assumed design scenario. Josephson-junction-based axion detection through resonant activation

We discuss the resonant activation phenomenon on a Josephson junction due to the coupling of the Josephson system with axions. We show how such an effect can be exploited for axion detection. A nonmonotonic behavior, with a minimum, of the mean switching time from the superconducting to the resistive state versus the ratio of the axion energy and the Josephson plasma energy is found. We demonstrate how variations in switching times make it possible to detect the presence of the axion field. An experimental protocol for observing axions through their coupling with a Josephson system is proposed.

Synthetic phenomenology, in the sense of Chrisley, mainly focuses on the analysis of simplified perceptual signals with small or reduced dimensionality. Instead, we claim that synthetic phenomenology should be analysed in terms of dynamic perceptual signals with huge dimensionality. We claim that forms of dimensionality reduction of the perceptual signals, as done e.g. in typical robot vision applications, are characteristics of automatic “unconscious” processing. The renewed interest in metaphysics in the areas of both analytic and conti-nental philosophy and the plurality of metaphysics arising from the different conceptions of metaphysics worked out in the various investigative fields make it necessary to ask what metaphysics can be practised today. In its origin from Aristotle metaphysics has an eidetic essence which makes metaphysics highly compatible with phenomenology. Such an eidetic structure supports the project of a phenomenological metaphysics which is able to respond to the needs of philosophical research of today in both the ontological and gnose-ological spheres.
