Abstract α−galactosylceramide, a natural killer T cell ligand, and its synthetic homolog, KRN7000, consistently influence IFN-γ and TNF-α release, both mediators of LPS-induced shock. To modify the course of endotoxin shock, we injected KRN7000 at different time points of experimental systemic Shwartzman reaction. Mice treated with KRN7000 survived when it was injected within 2 h before and after LPS challenge. Mice survival was associated with low levels of T helper 1 (Th1) cytokines, such as IFN-γ and TNF-α. The generalized Shwartzman reaction in mice which had been primed and challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) depends on interleukin (IL)-12-induced interferon (IFN)-gamma production at the priming stage. We examined the involvement in the priming mechanism of the unique population of Valpha14 natural killer T (NKT) cells because they promptly produce IFN-gamma after IL-12 stimulation. We report here that LPS- or IL-12-primed NKT cell genetically deficient mice were found to be resistant to LPS-elicited mortality. McArdle's disease is an autosomal recessive glycogenosis due to mutation in the myophosphorylase gene (PYGM) resulting in a pure myopathy. The clinical onset typically occurs in childhood with cramps, myalgia, and intolerance to physical exercise, although late onset forms are also reported. We describe a case of a 17-year-old male complaining of cramps and myalgia following brief and intense exercise. The patient reported marked improvement in muscle fatigability few minutes after starting aerobic exercise. The Hikikomori Phenomenon of Social Withdrawal: An Emerging Condition Involving Youth's Mental Health and Social Participation.

The objective of this editorial is to raise awareness on the burden and risks faced by adolescents developing this emerging form of social withdrawal. The hikikomori phenomenon is part of the group of new morbidities causing children and adolescents to limit their activity owing to a chronic health condition with attendant psychological problems. We further emphasize the importance of including new morbidities involving mental health and social participation in formal pediatric training, to enable new generations of pediatricians to identify and properly manage these disorders.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the value of microvascular obstruction (MO) and infarct size as a percentage of left ventricular mass (15%LV), as measured by contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance, in predicting major cardiovascular adverse events (MACE) at 2 years in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction reperfused by primary percutaneous coronary intervention. SHG efficiency of the poled guest - host polymer system is proportional to the concentration and orientation degree of NLO active molecules (chromophores). Corona poling realized at elevated temperatures could cause concentration decrease of NLO- active molecules due to centrosymmetric crystallization. Our studies showed that number density of crystallites is depending on orientation procedure.
