Designed biodegradable hydrogel structures prepared by stereolithography using poly(ethylene glycol)/poly(D,L-lactide)-based resins

2010

Designed three-dimensional biodegradable poly(ethylene glycol)/poly(D,L-lactide) hydrogel structures were prepared for the first time by stereolithography at high resolutions. A photo-polymerisable aqueous resin comprising PDLLA-PEG-PDLLA-based macromer, visible light photo-initiator, dye and inhibitor in DMSO/water was used to build the structures. Porous and non-porous hydrogels with well-defined architectures and good mechanical properties were prepared. Porous hydrogel structures with a gyroid pore network architecture showed narrow pore size distributions, excellent pore interconnectivity and good mechanical properties. The structures showed good cell seeding characteristics, and human…

Recycling of plastics from packaging

1997

Plastic waste coming from the separate collection of packaging film was recycled and characterized. The material is a blend of low density and linear low density polyethylene and after recycling shows mechanical and rheological properties depending on the processing conditions and apparatus. High processing temperature and high residence times strongly enhance the degradation processes and reduce the mechanical properties, in particular the elongation at break. A possible use of this recycled plastic is for the production of low pressure pipes but the properties are lower than those of virgin pipe grade polyethylene. By introducing additives, like antioxidants, inert fillers and impact modi…

Timing effect of intramyocardial hydrogel injection for positively impacting left ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction

2015

Intramyocardial injection of various injectable hydrogel materials has shown benefit in positively impacting the course of left ventricular (LV) remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI). However, since LV remodeling is a complex, time dependent process, the most efficacious time of hydrogel injection is not clear. In this study, we injected a relatively stiff, thermoresponsive and bioabsorbable hydrogel in rat hearts at 3 different time points - immediately after MI (IM), 3 d post-MI (3D), and 2 w post-MI (2W), corresponding to the beginnings of the necrotic, fibrotic and chronic remodeling phases. The employed left anterior descending coronary artery ligation model showed expected infar…

Enhancing Performance of a Bis(arylimino)pyridine‐Iron Precatalyst for Ethylene Polymerization by Substitution with a 2,4‐Bis(4,4′‐dimethoxybenzhydry…

2021

A series of unsymmetrical 2-(2,4-bis(bis(4-methoxyphenyl)methyl)-6-MeC6H2N)-6-(1-(arylimino)ethyl)pyridine-iron halides has been synthesized and characterized. The molecular structure of two representative species was determined by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Activated with either MAO or MMAO, the precatalysts displayed high activity, reaching 2.19×107 g PE (mol Fe)−1 h−1 at 60 °C in ethylene polymerization. The microstructural analysis of the polymers obtained indicates highly linear polyethylene containing a vinyl chain end.

Enhancing performance of α‐diiminonickel precatalyst for ethylene polymerization by substitution with the 2,4‐bis(4,4'‐dimethoxybenzhydryl)‐6‐methylp…

2020

High activities in ethylene polymerization predetermine α‐diiminonickel precatalysts for potential industrial applications. In our study, we have synthesized and characterized a series of unsymmetrical 1‐(2,4‐bis(4,4′‐dimethoxybenzhydryl)‐6‐MeC6H2N)‐2‐arylimino‐acenaphthylene nickel(II) halides. The single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction study of representative compounds reveals distorted tetrahedral geometry. On activation with either Me2AlCl or modified methylaluminoxane, these nickel complexes exhibit high activities of the order of 106 g of PE (mol of Ni)−1 h−1 and produce polyethylene of generic application characterized by high molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution, and mod…

Experimental Investigation for Local Tank Inflow Model

2014

In the present paper the effect of private roof tanks and of the float valve characteristics on apparent losses due to water meter errors was investigated via an experimental study. The tests were carried out at the Environmental Hydraulic Laboratory of the University of Enna (Italy), on a high-density polyethylene (HDPE 100 PN16) looped distribution network. The experimental results showed that network pressure plays an important role in the characterisation of the floating ball valve emitter law, but the tank operating condition is the most relevant aspect to be considered mainly for water meter error evaluation. Impact of contact lens material and design on the ocular surface.

2018

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the impact on the ocular surface of a daily disposable hydrogel contact lens with high water content compared with two silicone hydrogel daily disposable lenses of lower water content. METHODS: The hydrogel lens assessed was made from nesofilcon A and the silicone hydrogel lenses were made of delefilcon A and stenfilcon A. Contact lens thickness was measured to assess material stability during daily wear, and ocular surface parameters such as tear film osmolarity, tear meniscus area and central corneal thickness were also assessed. Optical quality was analysed for all cases by means of wavefront aberrometry. RESULTS: The nesofilcon A was shown to be the thinnest lens…

Small-angle x-ray scattering experiments for investigating the validity of the two-phase model

1973

A New method for evaluating SAXS curves of polymer samples with lamellar structure is applied to two typical scattering curves measured with a solution-crystallized linear polyethylene and a melt-crystallized branched polyethylene respectively. The method permits a rigorous check of the validity of the two-phase model and yields, without additional measurement, the volume fractions of the two phases and the difference in their densities. The densities can than be obtained by measuring the overall density of the sample. The results are: ρc = 0.996 g/cm3,ρa = 0.854 g/cm3, wa = 0.20 for the solution-crystallized sample; ρc = 0.967 g/cm3,ρa = 0.850 g/cm3, wa = 0.36 for the melt-crystallized sam…

Effect of peginterferon alfa-2a on liver histology in chronic hepatitis C: a meta-analysis of individual patient data

2004

Multicenter randomized trials have shown that once-weekly pegylated interferon (peginterferon) alfa-2a is more efficacious than conventional interferon alfa-2a (IFN) in patients with chronic hepatitis C. We performed a meta-analysis of 1,013 previously untreated patients (from 3 randomized trials) with pretreatment and post-treatment liver biopsies to assess the differences between peginterferon alfa-2a and IFN in terms of their effects on liver histology. Reported values were standardized mean differences (SMD) between patients receiving peginterferon alfa-2a and those receiving IFN (post-treatment value minus baseline value for each group). We used a random-effects model to quantify the a…

The antioxidant effect in controlling thermal degradation of a LDPE blow film

2004

It is well known that antioxidants are widely used to prevent thermal degradation of high density and linear low density polyethylene. Antioxidants are not always present in low density polyethylene and only small amounts are usually added to these resins. In this work the effect of an antioxidant system on a low density resin having MFI (190 °C/2.16 kg)=2 g/10′ and density 0.9230 g/cm3 has been studied. Its effect on melt viscosity has been studied by means of a batch mixer and the torque vs time behaviour has been analysed. The results show that a maximum in the torque vs time curve can be seen for the material containing antioxidant. In contrast, the material without antioxidant does not…
