Volatility Weighting over Time in the Presence of Transaction Costs

2019

Numerous empirical studies demonstrate the superiority of dynamic strategies with a volatility-weighting-over-time mechanism. These strategies control the portfolio risk over time by adjusting the risk exposure according to updated volatility forecasts. Yet, to reap all the benefits promised by volatility weighting over time, the composition of the active portfolio must be revised rather frequently. Transaction costs represent a serious obstacle to benefiting from this dynamic risk control technique. In this article, we propose a modified volatility-weighting strategy that allows one to reduce dramatically the amount of trading costs. The empirical evidence shows that the advantages of the …

Visions for regenerative medicine: interface between scientific fact and science fiction.

2006

This article gives a brief overview of the authors' views on the future development of tissue engineering with respect to the challenges both to the materials and life sciences. Emphasis will be placed on the advantages of three-dimensional bioresorbable polymers in combination with relevant molecular cues and the application of autologous stem or progenitor cells. There is a requirement for much more diversity in the synthesis of so-called "intelligent" materials, which respond to external stimuli, as well as the development of novel drug and gene delivery systems. In addition, much more basic research is necessary in developmental biology and the application of modern cell and molecular b…

Mechanisms of polymer crystallization from flowing solutions

1978

The recent experimental results on flow-induced crystallization by Pennings and coworkers show that extremely rigid polyethylene fibers can be obtained in a shear flow. On the other hand, the mechanism by which these flow-induced crystals are produced is still open to investigation. In this work a few aspects of fibrous crystal growth are theoretically investigated. The molecular dynamics of chains partly attached to the crystal and partly immersed in the solution is considered. The influence of temperature and of geometrical factors is also discussed.

Synthesis of oligomers and polymers doped with porphyrins for solar energy conversion

2017

The aim of this thesis was to elaborate new electron donor materials for organic solarcells. This emerging photovoltaic technology is rapidly expanding, and has yet already reached the limit for its large-scale commercialization. The low manufacturing cost of organic photovoltaic devices make then competitive face to well-established inorganic technologies. Their biggest advantage is their weight and their mechanical properties which make them flexible. They should play a key role in future as a complement to classic solar cells, with their use in specific applications. We developed polymers by using different chomophores, well-known for their interesting photophysical properties: the porph…

Detoxification of Copper and Chromium via Dark Hydrogen Fermentation of Potato Waste by Clostridium butyricum Strain 92

2022

The accumulation of various types of waste containing both organic and inorganic metal-containing compounds is extremely hazardous for living organisms. The possibility of polymer degradation, biohydrogen synthesis, and metal detoxification via the dark fermentation of model potato waste was investigated. For this purpose, the strict anaerobic strain was isolated and identified as Clostridium butyricum. The high efficiency of dark hydrogen fermentation of potatoes with yield of hydrogen in 85.8 ± 15.3 L kg−1 VSpotato was observed. The copperand chromium salts solutions were added to the culture fluid to obtain the concentrations of 50, 100, and 200 mg L−1 Cu(II) and Cr(VI) in the active pha…

New Microbe Killers : Self-Assembled Silver(I) Coordination Polymers Driven by a Cagelike Aminophosphine

2019

New Ag(I) coordination polymers, formulated as [Ag(μ-PTAH)(NO3)2]n (1) and [Ag(μ-PTA)(NO2)]n (2), were self-assembled as light- and air-stable microcrystalline solids and fully characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS(±), elemental analysis, powder (PXRD) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Their crystal structures reveal resembling 1D metal-ligand chains that are driven by the 1,3,5-triaza-7-phospaadamantane (PTA) linkers and supported by terminal nitrate or nitrite ligands; these chains were classified within a 2C1 topological type. Additionally, the structure of 1 features a 1D!2D network extension through intermolecular hydrogen bonds…

Antioxidant Activity and Release Kinetics of Caffeic and p-Coumaric Acids from Hydrocolloid-Based Active Films for Healthy Packaged Food

2017

International audience; Sustainable hydrocolloid-based films containing natural antioxidants, caffeic and p-coumaric acids at different concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 5%, and 10% w/w of polymers, were designed for packing fatty foods. Antioxidant activities and kinetics for all film formulations were assessed using radical scavenging activity (DPPH), reducing power, and iron chelating ability. Release kinetics of the antioxidants from the films into a food simulant (96% ethanol) were analyzed. The intermolecular interactions between antioxidants and polymers chains were assessed by Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) and related to the film properties. Antioxidan…

Toward the Decarbonization of Plastic: Monopolymer Blend of Virgin and Recycled Bio-Based, Biodegradable Polymer.

2022

Decarbonization of plastics is based on two main pillars: bio-based polymers and recycling. Mechanical recycling of biodegradable polymers could improve the social, economic and environmental impact of the use of these materials. In this regard, the aim of this study was to investigate whether concentrations of the same recycled biopolymer could significantly affect the rheological and mechanical properties of biodegradable monopolymer blends. Monopolymer blends are blends made of the same polymers, virgin and recycled. A sample of commercially available biodegradable blend was reprocessed in a single-screw extruder until two extrusion cycles were completed. These samples were exposed to gr…
