Structure-properties relationships of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) filled PS nanocomposites

The polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) additivated polystyrene (PS) based nanocomposites were pre- pared by melt processing and the structure-properties relationships of the POSS-PS systems were compared to those of the neat PS. In order to investigate the effect of these structural parameters on the final properties of the polymer nanocompos- ites, five different kinds of POSS samples were used, in particular, POSS with different inorganic cage and with different organic pendent groups. Thermodiffusion of sodium polystyrene sulfonate in a supporting electrolyte

Thermodiffusion, or the Soret phenomenon, is well understood in simple systems, but in multicomponent and polyvalent electrolyte systems the process becomes more complicated due to the coupling of fluxes. We experimentally investigate the time evolution of a concentration gradient generated by thermodiffusion of a polyelectrolyte (poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate), NaPSS) in a 1:1 supporting electrolyte. We also derive and solve the transport equations that are used to extract the Soret coefficient from the experimental observations. It is shown that NaPSS thermodiffusion in NaCl is strongly dependent on concentration, with almost 100% thermal separation in concentrations below 15 nmol L−1. …

Particulate fillers are often used to improve the dimensional stability of polymeric items obtained through processing techniques such as injection molding, deep drawing, hot stamping, etc. In these operations the material undergoes large multiaxial deformations which result in molecular orientation and remain as frozen-in stresses during cooling of the material. Once the formed objects are exposed to sufficiently high temperatures, various degrees of spring-back take place and subsequent changes in shape and dimension occur (1).

The in vitro effect of the addition of ion exchange resins on the bioavailability of electrolytes in artificial enteral feeding formulas Objective: To determine in vitro free ion concentration in three standard artificial enteral feeding formulas following the addition of ion exchange resins. Method: Three standard types of AEF were chosen: Osmolite HN®, Nutrison Standard® and Isosource Standard®. Abstract The photo-stability of Polystyrene-Polybutadiene-Polystyrene (SBS) based nanocomposites containing bare multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanotubes bearing carboxylic functional groups (CNTs-COOH) in comparison to that of pristine SBS has been studied. The photo-oxidation of pristine SBS occurs through crosslinking reactions and oxidized species formation and both these processes begin at early stage of exposure. Azoxybenzene rearrangement catalyzed by solid acids

Abstract For the first time, the potential of acidic cation-exchange resin (sulfonated polystyrene) to catalyze the Wallach rearrangement of azoxybenzene into 4-hydroxyazobenzene has been proved. This finding reveals an alternative reaction path possible in a heterogeneous process using solid acids and may help to clear some doubts concerning the rearrangement mechanism postulated so far. The resin-induced reaction was found to proceed exclusively in a non-polar medium. Reasonable yield was obtained particularly in isooctane due to favorable distribution of azoxybenzene throughout the resin's matrix.
