Convective and stratiform precipitation: A PCA-based clustering algorithm for their identification

2020

The increasing occurrence of flood events in some areas of the Southern Mediterranean area (e.g., Sicily), over the last few years, has contributed to raising the importance of characterizing such events and identifying their causes.

Phosphoproteinphosphatase activity in sea urchin embryos

1964

Purification of a nuclease from human serum.

1981

The purification procedure for a nuclease from human serum is described. It includes ammonium sulfate precipitation, chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex and on Sephacryl-S 200, and preparative electrophoresis. The enzyme, purified about 2000-fold, is homogeneous in a sodium dodecyl sulfate electrophoretic system, where it has a mol. wt of 78,000. The pH optimum lies around pH 6.5; it is a sugar-nonspecific endonuclease.

Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide-Dependent and Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide-Independent Lactate Dehydrogenases in Homofermentative and Heterofe…

1971

Three homofermentative ( Lactobacillus plantarum B38, L. plantarum B33, Pediococcus pentosaceus B30) and three heterofermentative ( Leuconostoc mesenteroides 39, L. oenos B70, Lactobacillus brevis ) lactic acid bacteria were examined for the presence or absence of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)-dependent and NAD-independent d - and l -lactate dehydrogenases. Two of the six strains investigated, P. pentosaceus and L. oenos , did not exhibit an NAD-independent enzyme activity capable of reducing dichlorophenol indophenol. The p H optima of the lactic dehydrogenases were determined. The NAD-dependent enzymes from homofermentative strains exhibited optima at p H 7.8 to 8.8, whereas va…

Biosilicification of loricate choanoflagellate: organic composition of the nanotubular siliceous costal strips of Stephanoeca diplocostata.

2010

SUMMARY Loricate choanoflagellates (unicellular, eukaryotic flagellates; phylum Choanozoa) synthesize a basket-like siliceous lorica reinforced by costal strips (diameter of approximately 100 nm and length of 3 μm). In the present study, the composition of these siliceous costal strips is described, using Stephanoeca diplocostata as a model. Analyses by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), coupled with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), indicate that the costal strips comprise inorganic and organic components. The organic, proteinaceous scaffold contained one major polypeptide of mass 14 kDa that reacted with wheat germ agglutinin. Polyclonal antibodies were raised that allowed …

Modelling biological and chemically induced precipitation of calcium phosphate in enhanced biological phosphorus removal systems

2011

The biologically induced precipitation processes can be important in wastewater treatment, in particular treating raw wastewater with high calcium concentration combined with Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal. Currently, there is little information and experience in modelling jointly biological and chemical processes. This paper presents a calcium phosphate precipitation model and its inclusion in the Activated Sludge Model No 2d (ASM2d). The proposed precipitation model considers that aqueous phase reactions quickly achieve the chemical equilibrium and that aqueous-solid change is kinetically governed. The model was calibrated using data from four experiments in a Sequencing Batch Rea…

Plasma pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution study of cajaninstilbene acid in rats by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry

2010

Cajaninstilbene acid (CSA; 3-hydroxy-4-prenyl-5-methoxystilbene-2-carboxylic acid) is a major active constituent of pigeonpea leaves, has been proven to be effective in clinical treatment of diabetes, hepatitis, measles and dysentery. A rapid and sensitive liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed and validated for the determination of CSA in rat plasma and various tissues (brain, heart, lung, liver, spleen, small intestine and kidney) of rat for the first time. Rat plasma and tissue distribution pre-treated by protein precipitation with acetoacetate was analyzed using LC-MS/MS with an electrospray ionization (ESI) interface, and isoliquiritigenin was us…

A local post-retrieval tool for satellite precipitation estimates

2012

As illustrated by several literature case studies spread around di erent geographic locations, satellite precipi- tation estimates, obtained by means of consolidated algorithms, often result being considerably biased. Moreover observed bias is related to geographic location since particular features such as latitude, presence of coastal areas and climatological and weather regime, a ect performances of satellite estimates. Bias adjusted products that make use of global ground-based precipitation estimates, are available as well but still these datasets may show a relevant bias level. In this study a procedure to bias-adjust satellite precipitation estimates has been devel- oped for the loca…
