Techno-Economic Case Study of Micro-Grid System at Soccer Club of Skagerak Arena Norway
2020
The photovoltaic system and battery energy storage can be used in a microgrid system for reducing peak demand from the grid and it enhances overall techno-economic performance of the system. In this work, a functioning micro-grid of 800 kWp photovoltaic system and 1 MWh lithium ion battery, located at Soccer Club of Skagrek Arena (Norway), is used for techno-economic analysis and operational load from years 2015 to 2018. The system performance has been analyzed for understanding the techno-economic operation, and contributions from the PV and battery energy storage for reducing peak demand from the grid. In this study, it has been observed that the integration of PV and battery energy stora…
On the classification of Kim and Kostrikin manifolds
2006
International audience; We completely classify the topological and geometric structures of some series of closed connected orientable 3-manifolds introduced by Kim and Kostrikin in [20, 21] as quotient spaces of certain polyhedral 3-cells by pairwise identifications of their boundary faces. Then we study further classes of closed orientable 3-manifolds arising from similar polyhedral schemata, and describe their topological properties.
Sample preparation and analysis of gangliosides and phospholipids from plasma by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry
2016
Gangliosides (GG) and phospholipids (PL) are two classes of complex and polar lipids exhibiting a wide structural heterogeneity. LC/MS offers an access to this huge diversity but also faces some challenges. Efficient extraction and purification sample methods are thus required to perform accurate and reliable analyses. To this end, GG and PL were extracted from human plasma with three solvent mixtures (CHCl3/MeOH/H2O) of increasing polarity, in comparison with the reference Folch method. GG were further purified with a Phree Phospholipid Removal column, whose sorbent is designed to selectively remove PL. GG and PL classes were then separated under HILIC conditions before analysis using a Qq…

Comprehension of complex animation : cueing, segmentation and 2D / 3D presentations
2011
The goal of our studies was to test the effect of segmentation, cueing, and 2D/3D presentations to foster complex animation rocessing. The material was an upright mechanical piano system. We used an eye tracking system which provides information about learners’ attention direction during the animation processing. We analyzed the effect of the format presentations and the eye movements during learning. Based on animation and multimedia research background, four experiments were conducted. In the first experiment the effect of the presentation of simplified external representations on learning from complex animation was investigated. Experiment two and three aimed at studying the cognitive pr…
Immune surveillance of neural stem cells
2022
Antigen presentation through major histocompatibility complexes and the subsequent immune surveillance by cytotoxic T lymphocytes is considered a preventive mechanism against damaged or infected cells. At the same time, the central nervous system has long been considered an isolated territory where immune responses could not be fully developed. However, in the light of recent findings, these assumptions need to be revisited. On one hand, it has been demonstrated that quiescent adult stem cells down-regulate antigen exposure and evade immune surveillance in the hair follicle and the muscle. On the other hand, the identification of lymphatic routes for the drainage of brain-derived antigens h…

Economic assessment of sicilian loquat orchards
2015
The majority of Italian production of loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) derives from the Palermo province, along the northern Sicilian coast. However, this area is characterized by family orchards, traditional cultural techniques, and inadequate commercial organization. These appear to affect negatively the production costs and reduce the farmersâ income, decreasing the competitiveness of Sicilian loquat orchards. This study evaluates the economic viability of Sicilian loquat orchards by means of cost-benefit analysis (CBA). In particular, for the investment assessment some financial indicators have been calculated such as net present value (NPV), discounted payback time (DPBT), and internal r…
A model study for the progressive disruption of CA1 firing properties during Alzheimer’s disease
2011
Several independent studies show that β-Amyloid (Aβ) peptides accumulation, one of the characteristic hallmark of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), can affect the normal neuronal activity in different ways causing an increase or a decrease in neuronal membrane excitability. For example, experimental evidence for a negative impact on neuronal membrane in animal models of AD has been obtained in dual patch recordings in rat hippocampal tissue slices, in which Aβ blocked K channels in pyramidal cell dendrites, causing an increase in dendritic membrane excitability. The resulting increased Ca2+ influx and excitoxicity may lead to dendritic degeneration. However, further experimental evidence suggests t…
