Beta-adrenergic blocking activity and haemodynamic effects in man of K 1313, a new beta-adrenergic antagonist
1971
The beta-adrenergic blocking activity and haemodynamic effects of o-[2-hydroxy-3-(isopropylamino)-propoxy]-benzonitril (Ko 1313) have been studied in 22 patients. Antagonism of isoproterenol-induced tachycardia was used as a measure of the beta-adrenergic blocking activity. Ko 1313 1.0 mg had its maximum beta-adrenoceptor blocking effect 5–30 min after intravenous injection. Ko 1313 10.0 mg produced maximum betablockade 1–4 h after oral administration. 1.0 mg Ko 1313 injected intravenously had approximately the same beta-adrenergic blocking effect as 1.0 mg propranolol also given intravenously. After intravenous administration Ko 1313 was 3–4 times as potent as the same dose given orally. A…
The Association of Mediterranean Diet during Pregnancy with Longitudinal Body Mass Index Trajectories and Cardiometabolic Risk in Early Childhood.
2019
Objective To evaluate the associations between maternal adherence to the Mediterranean diet during pregnancy and their offspring's longitudinal body mass index (BMI) trajectories and cardiometabolic risk in early childhood. Study design We included mother-child pairs from the Infancia y Medio Ambiente (INMA) longitudinal cohort study in Spain. We measured dietary intake during pregnancy using a validated food frequency questionnaire and calculated the relative Mediterranean diet score (rMED). We estimated offspring's BMI z score trajectories from birth to age 4 years using latent class growth analyses (n = 2195 mother-child pairs). We measured blood pressure, waist circumference, and cardio…
Comparison of high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and Griess reagent-spectroscopic methods for the measurement of nitrate in serum from health…
2008
Bioavailability of NO can be estimated by measuring the concentration of nitrate (NO(3)) in serum. However, the methods used for the measurement NO(3) in plasma or serum show a great degree of variation. Therefore, we compared two analytical methods for the measurement of NO(3) in serum. The concentration of NO(3) in 600 serum samples collected from healthy individuals was determined by the HPLC and by the Griess reagent-spectroscopic method. The concentration of NO(3) in the samples was 29.4+/-16.1 micromol/L and 26.2+/-14.0 micromol/L (mean+/-SD) measured by HPLC and Griess reagent-spectroscopic method respectively (p0.0001). We detected a significant correlation between the two methods (R=…
Physical fitness profile in female horseback riders.
2019
BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to examine the levels of endurance and neuromuscular performance variables in female horseback riders. METHODS: 52 female Finnish riders were involved (age 29.4±8.9 yrs, height 1.68±0.06 m, weight 67.5±10.0 kg), 19 show-jumping riders (SJ) and 33 eventing riders (E), riding-time minimum of 4 times/week, jumping level of minimum 1.06±0.11m. The measurements were maximal bilateral isometric leg press force (MVCLP), maximal unilateral isometric knee extension (MVCKE) and flexion forces (MVCKF), countermovement jump (CMJ), maximal isometric force of the trunk extensor and flexor muscles (MVCE, MVCF), weight distribution of the body (WD), handgrip…
Increase in Nocturnal Blood Pressure and Progression to Microalbuminuria in Type 1 Diabetes
2002
Patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and microalbuminuria often have elevated blood pressure while they are asleep, but it is not known whether the elevation develops concomitantly with microalbuminuria or precedes it.We monitored 75 adolescents and young adults who had had type 1 diabetes with normal urinary albumin excretion and blood pressure for more than five years. Ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring was used to assess blood pressure at the initial evaluation and about two years later, at which time all subjects had normal urinary albumin excretion. Subsequently, subjects were monitored for the development of microalbuminuria.Microalbuminuria developed in 14 subjects, whereas the o…
Influence of early life risk factors and lifestyle on systemic vascular resistance in later adulthood : the cardiovascular risk in young Finns study
2021
Purpose: There are limited data available concerning the effects of lifetime risk factors and lifestyle on systemic hemodynamics, especially on systemic vascular resistance. The purpose of the study was to evaluate how lifetime cardiovascular risk factors (body mass index (BMI), high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, systolic blood pressure, blood glucose) and lifestyle factors (vegetable consumption, fruit consumption, smoking and physical activity) predict systemic vascular resistance index (SVRI) and cardiac index (CI) assessed in adulthood. Materials and Methods: Our study cohort comprised 1635 subjects of the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study followed …
Acute Endocrine and Force Responses and Long-Term Adaptations to Same-Session Combined Strength and Endurance Training in Women
2015
This study examined acute hormone and force responses and strength and endurance performance and muscle hypertrophy before and after 24 weeks of same-session combined strength and endurance training in previously untrained women. Subjects were assigned 1 of 2 training orders: endurance preceding strength (E + S, n = 15) or vice versa (S + E, n = 14). Acute force and hormone responses to a combined loading (continuous cycling and a leg press protocol in the assigned order) were measured. Additionally, leg press 1 repetition maximum (1RM), maximal workload during cycling (Wmax), and muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) were assessed. Loading-induced decreases in force were significant (p < 0.01–…
Neonatal outcome following long-distance air travel for fetoscopic laser coagulation treatment of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome
2011
Abstract Objective To investigate the impact of undertaking long-distance air travel to a specialized medical center while pregnant in order to undergo fetoscopic laser coagulation (FLC) for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted of women with TTTS who travelled by air (n = 16) or land (n = 61) to the Centre of Perinatal Diagnosis and Microinvasive Fetal Surgery, Mainz, Germany, between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2010. All women underwent FLC on arrival at the study center. Neonatal outcome, postoperative neonatal survival rates, and rates of adverse effects were recorded. Results The postoperative survival rate for a single twin …
Studies on the mechanism of mineralocorticoid-induced blood pressure increase in man.
1979
1. To gain insight into the mechanism of mineralocorticoid-induced blood pressure rise in man we performed haemodynamic studies in six normotensive volunteer subjects before and during administration of the synthetic steroid 9α-fluorocortisol (0·8 mg daily) for a period of 6 weeks. In a further study, performed in seven subjects, plasma noradrenaline concentration and reactivity to exogenous noradrenaline were determined before and during administration of the mineralocorticoid. 2. Within the first week of steroid administration an increase in mean arterial blood pressure could be demonstrated, which was due to an increase in cardiac output. After the sixth week the elevated blood pressure …
