European Politics of Food Origin. A Semiotic Analysis of Geographical Indications

2021

This chapter investigates the relationship between food products and origin places within the European Union food policies. In the 1990s, the EU established a Geographical Indication (GI) system, constituted of a set of food quality brands and a legal framework for food, wine and spirits. This system, defined as a sui generis model by insiders, entails a strong EU government participation in the typical food symbolic and material modelling. The sui generis model establishes a government monopoly on the place-based labels registration and institutes an atypical kind of intellectual property based on geographic marks. By proposing a semiotic approach toward the analysis of European Geographic…

Food Processing and Foodborne Illness

2015

Food processing means manipulation of raw materials from plants or animals into food. Since agriculture and animal husbandry were established postharvest procedures were necessary to preserve for a longer time the increasing food supplies coming from the fields and domesticated animals. Food is one of the best culture medium for a lot of microorganisms and preventing food spoilage caused by enzymes and microorganisms is crucial. Deterioration of food is caused mainly by three natural processes: 1. Oxidation – vegetables after harvesting or meat after animal slaughtering get in contact with the oxygen in the air that makes them rancid and unpleasant. 2. Enzyme action – all food contains natu…

Grammar based content completion method using Lua LPeg.re module

2014

A grammar based content completion method for Lua programming language and its LPeg.re module environment is described in this paper. The use of our method is not demanding in computing resources, as well as it is easy to add the content completion functionality to any target language grammar. We report on the application of our method for OWL Manchester syntax expression grammar, as well as custom database-to-ontology mapping language.

On the Non-uniform Redundancy of Representations for Grammatical Evolution: The Influence of Grammars

2018

The representation used in grammatical evolution (GE) is non-uniformly redundant as some phenotypes are represented by more genotypes than others. This article studies how the non-uniform redundancy of the GE representation depends on various types of grammars. When constructing the phenotype tree from a genotype, the used grammar determines Bavg, the average branching factor. Bavg measures the expected number of non-terminals chosen when mapping one genotype codon to a phenotype tree node. First, the paper illustrates that the GE representation induces a bias towards small trees. This bias gets stronger with lower Bavg. For example, when using a grammar with Bavg = 0.5, 75% of all genotype…

Prediction of the difficulty level in a standardized reading comprehension test : contributions from cognitive psychology and psychometrics

2013

Bioactive Phytochemicals from Grape Seed Oil-Processing By-Products

2022

Winemaking leads to by-products with high added value, which can be used for new productions in different fields. The reuse of grape seed is addressed in the production of oil and related oil-processing by-products. The main residue from seed oil processing is represented by grape seed flour. A focus on grapeseed oil and health by literature quantitative research analysis is presented. Chemical composition, bioactive compounds, and biological and functional properties ofgrape seed oil and oil-processing by-products are described, and databases containing data and information on grape seed by-products are highlighted. Due to their contents of nutrients and bioactive molecules, grape seed oil…

A Graph Database Approach to Wireless IIoT Workcell Performance Evaluation

2020

The workcell is considered a main building block of various industrial settings. Hence, it is examined as a primary testing environment for studying wireless communication techniques in factory automation processes. A new testbed was recently designed and developed to facilitate such studies in workcells by replicating various data flows in an emulated production environment. In this paper, an approach to storing and analyzing network performance data from a manufacturing factory workcell is introduced. A robotic testbed was constructed using two collaborative grade robot arms, machine emulators, and wireless communication devices. A graph database approach was implemented to capture networ…

Robust Graph Topology Learning and Application in Stock Market Inference

2019

In many applications, there are multiple interacting entities, generating time series of data over the space. To describe the relation within the set of data, the underlying topology may be used. In many real applications, not only the signal/data of interest is measured in noise, but it is also contaminated with outliers. The proposed method, called RGTL, infers the graph topology from noisy measurements and removes these outliers simultaneously. Here, it is assumed that we have no information about the space graph topology, while we know that graph signal are sampled consecutively in time and thus the graph in time domain is given. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm h…

GPU-laskennan optimointi

2013

Näytönohjaimet, grafiikkasuorittimet, tarjoavat rinnakkaisen laskennan alustan, jossa voidaan suorittaa ohjelmakoodia satojen ydinten toimesta. Tämä alusta mahdollistaa matemaattisesti työläiden ongelmien ratkaisemisen tehokkaasti. Grafiikkasuorittimen rinnakkainen suoritusympäristö kuitenkin eroaa suuresti tietokoneen suorittimen peräkkäisestä suoritusympäristöstä. Ongelmien ratkaisemiseksi tehokkaasti rinnakkaisympäristössä on noudettava ohjelmointimenetelmiä, jotka soveltuvat erityisesti rinnakkaisympäristöön. Tässä työssä tarkastellaan rinnakkaisen laskennan perusteita, miten erilaiset ohjelmointimenetelmät vaikuttavat ohjelman suoriutumiseen grafiikkasuorittimella sekä miten voidaan sa…

Adiabatic invariants drive rhythmic human motion in variable gravity.

2019

Voluntary human movements are stereotyped. When modeled in the framework of classical mechanics they are expected to minimize cost functions that may include energy, a natural candidate from a physiological point of view also. In time-changing environments, however, energy is no longer conserved---regardless of frictional energy dissipation---and it is therefore not the preferred candidate for any cost function able to describe the subsequent changes in motor strategies. Adiabatic invariants are known to be relevant observables in such systems, although they still need to be investigated in human motor control. We fill this gap and show that the theory of adiabatic invariants provides an ac…
