Parental experience of a risky environment leads to improved offspring growth rate.

2014

Abstract Parasites (or diseases) are major selective force for the evolution of life history traits and parasite-host evolution. Mothers can show a variety of responses to parasites during pregnancy with different consequences for them or their offspring. However, whether information in the maternal environment before pregnancy can cause a change in the phenotype of the offspring is unknown. To avoid the confounding effect of pathogens and to reduce the risk of direct effect of mother's immune activation, we injected female laboratory mice with lipopolysaccharides (LPS) before mating. In order to provide a constant information on the potential infectious risk of the environment, females wer…

Sparse Dynamic Programming for Longest Common Subsequence from Fragments

2002

Sparse Dynamic Programming has emerged as an essential tool for the design of efficient algorithms for optimization problems coming from such diverse areas as computer science, computational biology, and speech recognition. We provide a new sparse dynamic programming technique that extends the Hunt?Szymanski paradigm for the computation of the longest common subsequence (LCS) and apply it to solve the LCS from Fragments problem: given a pair of strings X and Y (of length n and m, respectively) and a set M of matching substrings of X and Y, find the longest common subsequence based only on the symbol correspondences induced by the substrings. This problem arises in an application to analysis…

XLCS: A New Bit-Parallel Longest Common Subsequence Algorithm on Xeon Phi Clusters

2019

Finding the longest common subsequence (LCS) of two strings is a classical problem in bioinformatics. A basic approach to solve this problem is based on dynamic programming. As the biological sequence databases are growing continuously, bit-parallel sequence comparison algorithms are becoming increasingly important. In this paper, we present XLCS, a new parallel implementation to accelerate the LCS algorithm on Xeon Phi clusters by performing bit-wise operations. We have designed an asynchronous IO framework to improve the data transfer efficiency. To make full use of the computing resources of Xeon Phi clusters, we use three levels of parallelism: node-level, thread-level and vector-level.…

Computer Science Outreach Workshop and Interest Development: A Longitudinal Study

2018

This longitudinal study investigates the impact of an extra-curricular programming workshop in student interest development in computer science. The workshop was targeted at 12–18-year old youngsters. A survey was sent to all previous participants with a known home address; 31.5% responded the survey (n = 197). This data was then combined with pre-workshop survey data, and analyzed with mixed methods. Positive development of interest was discovered for 57% of the respondents, of which nearly all attributed their interest increase to the workshop at least partly (92%). Qualitative inspection revealed that the workshop provided three anchors that facilitated students’ reengagement with progra…

Design on fuzzy control for a class of stochastic nonlinear systems

2014

The problem of Hankel-norm output feedback control is solved for a class of T-S fuzzy stochastic systems. The dynamic output feedback controller design technique is proposed by employing fuzzy-basis-dependent Lyapunov function approach and the conversion on the Hankel-norm controller parameters. Sufficient conditions are established to design the controllers such that the resulting closed-loop system is stochastically stable and satisfies a prescribed performance. The desired output feedback controller can be obtained by solving a convex optimization problem, which can be efficiently solved by standard numerical algorithms Refereed/Peer-reviewed

FPGA Implementation Of Diffusive Realization For A Distributed Control Operator

2010

International audience; We focus on the question of real-time computation for optimal distributed filtering or control applicable to MEMS Arrays. We present an algorithm for the realization of a linear operator solution to a functional equation through its application to a Lyapunov operatorial equation associated to the heat equation in one dimension. It is based on the diffusive realization, and turns to be well suited for fined grained parallel computer architecture as Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA). An effective FPGA implementation has been successfully carried out. Here, we report the main implementation steps and the final measured performances.

A M3G Talking Head for Smartphones

2011

Often customer information services or virtual support guides make use of friendly interface to facilitate human-machine interaction. Indeed, virtual guided tours or helpdesks use a talking anthropomorphic head to communicate with the user. In this paper, we present a talking head for Smart phones, PDAs and, in general, all the mobile devices able to support J2ME and MIDP protocol. The objective of this article is to illustrate how to make such an interface as portable as possible by maximizing the limited computational resources of these devices.

Calorie Restriction in Adulthood Reduces Hepatic Disorders Induced by Transient Postnatal Overfeeding in Mice

2019

International audience; Impaired early nutrition influences the risk of developing metabolic disorders in later life. We observed that transient postnatal overfeeding (OF) in mice induces long-term hepatic alterations, characterized by microsteatosis, fibrosis associated with oxidative stress (OS), and stress-induced premature senescence (SIPS). In this study, we investigated whether such changes can be reversed by moderate calorie restriction (CR). C57BL/6 male mice pups were maintained during lactation in litters adjusted to nine pups in the normal feeding (NF) group and three pups in the transient postnatal OF group. At six months of age, adult mice from the NF and OF groups were randoml…

Blood cell transcript levels in 5-year-old children as potential markers of breastfeeding effects in those small for gestational age at birth

2019

BackgroundNutrition of the newborn during the early postnatal period seems to be of capital importance and there is clinical evidence showing the protective effect of breastfeeding compared with formula feeding on childhood obesity and its comorbidities. Infants born small for gestation age may be more sensitive to the type of feeding during lactation. Here, we aimed to analyze the impact of birth weight and the type of infant feeding on the expression levels in peripheral blood cells of selected candidate genes involved in energy homeostasis in 5-year-old children, to find out potential early biomarkers of metabolic programming effects during this period of metabolic plasticity.MethodsFort…
