Application of propolis extract, nanovitamin C and nanovitamin E to prevent alveolar osteitis after impacted lower third molar surgery. A randomized,…
2020
Background Propolis has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and healing properties. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a gel containing 2% of propolis extract, 0.2% of ascorbic acid and 0.2% of tocopherol acetate is effective in preventing surgical complications related to impacted lower third molar extractions. Material and Methods A randomized, double-blind, split-mouth study was performed. Fifteen patients were recruited who needed bilateral impacted lower third molar extractions with a similar surgical difficulty. A test or placebo gel was administered randomly inside post-extraction sockets. Each patient was instructed to apply the gel 3 times/day in the surgical wound for a w…
Penetration of Streptococcus sobrinus and Streptococcus sanguinis into dental enamel.
2015
Abstract The aim of this pilot study was to assess the difference in virulence of acidogenic and aciduric oral streptococci in an in vitro caries model using their penetration depths into dental enamel. 30 caries-free extracted molars from 11- to 16-year-olds were cleaned ultrasonically for 1 min with de-ionized water and, after air-drying, embedded in epoxy resin. After 8-h of setting at room temperature, the specimens were ground on the buccal side with SiC-paper 1200 (particle size 13–16 μm). Enamel was removed in circular areas sized 3 mm in diameter; the mean depth of removed enamel was 230 ± 60 μm. 15 specimens each were incubated anaerobically under standardized conditions with 24 h-…
Hemostatic agents in endodontic surgery of maxillary molars : a randomized controlled pilot study of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) strips as an adju…
2019
Background Hemostasis is of critical importance in endodontic surgery. Studies on bleeding control in maxillary molars are scarce. The present study compares the efficacy of two hemostatic techniques in controlling bleeding in endodontic surgery. Material and Methods A randomized two-arm pilot study involving 30 patients with peri-radicular lesions in maxillary molars (first and second molars) was carried out including the following hemostatic agents: polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) strips as an adjunct to epinephrine impregnated gauze (test group; n = 15) and aluminum chloride (Expasyl™) (control; n = 15). Bleeding control was independently assessed by the surgeon and by two blinded observe…
Antibacterial suture vs silk for the surgical removal of impacted lower third molars. A randomized clinical study.
2015
Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and microbiological impact of an antibacterial suture (Monocryl® Plus) in the surgical removal of I3M. Material and Methods A “split-mouth”, prospective pilot clinical study was designed involving 20 patients programmed for the surgical removal of I3M. Each side was randomly sutured with Monocryl® Plus or silk suture and removed for microbiological study 72 hours and 7 days after surgery. Presence of SSI, wound bleeding and the degree of discomfort associated with each type of suture material (scored by means of a visual analog scale) were evaluated. The level of contamination of each material was observed under the scanning elec…

2014
A smooth projective complex curve C is called rationally uniformized by radicals if there exists a covering map C \rightarrow P^1 with solvable Galois group. C is called algebraically uniformized by radicals if there exists a finite covering C^{\prime} \rightarrow C with C^{\prime} rationally uniformized by radicals. Abramovich and Harris posed the following problem in [D. Abramovich and J. Harris, Abelian varieties and curves in $W_{d}(C)$, Compositio Math., 78 (1991), pp. 227–-238]. \vspace{1ex} Statement S(d, h, g): \textit{Suppose C^{\prime} \rightarrow C is a nonconstant map of smooth curves with C of genus g. If C^{\prime} admits a map of degree d or less to a curve of genus h or less…
Effect of C/N shock variation on the performances of a moving bed membrane bioreactor.
2015
Abstract The effect of a sharp variation of C/N ratio in a moving bed membrane bioreactor (MB-MBR) pilot plant treating high strength wastewater has been investigated. The experimental campaign was divided into two periods, each characterized by a different C/N ratio (namely, 2.5 and 15, Period 1 and Period 2, respectively). The MB-MBR system was analyzed in terms of organic carbon removal, nitrification efficiency, biokinetic activity and fouling behavior. The results showed that the nitrification process was severely affected by lower C/N value and by high concentration of ammonia. It was noticed an extensive stress effect on the autotrophic bacteria. Furthermore, it was observed an incre…
Capillary electrophoresis enhanced by automatic two-way background correction using cubic smoothing splines and multivariate data analysis applied to…
2005
Mixtures of the surfactant classes coconut diethanolamide, cocamido propyl betaine and alkylbenzene sulfonate were separated by capillary electrophoresis in several media containing organic solvents and anionic solvophobic agents. Good resolution between both the surfactant classes and the homologues within the classes was achieved in a BGE containing 80 mM borate buffer of pH 8.5, 20% n-propanol and 40 mM sodium deoxycholate. Full resolution, assistance in peak assignment to the classes (including the recognition of solutes not belonging to the classes), and improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio was achieved by multivariate data analysis of the time-wavelength electropherograms. Cubic s…
Towards unsupervised analysis of second-order chromatographic data: automated selection of number of components in multivariate curve-resolution meth…
2007
A method to apply multivariate curve-resolution unattendedly is presented. The algorithm is suitable to perform deconvolution of two-way data (e.g. retrieving the individual elution profiles and spectra of co-eluting compounds from signals obtained from a chromatograph equipped with multiple-channel detection: LC-DAD or GC-MS). The method is especially adequate to achieve the advantages of deconvolution approaches when huge amounts of data are present and manual application of multivariate techniques is too time-consuming. The philosophy of the algorithm is to mimic the reactions of an expert user when applying the orthogonal projection approach--multivariate curve-resolution techniques. Ba…
Una scuola che orienta nella formazione del progetto di vita
2019
The vocational training project is studied, within the wider life project, towards the end of adolescence. It is identified in the absence of planning, the main cause of the high number of young people who do not study, do not work and are not trained. To encourage a vocational training project by the students, teachers, in carrying out educational activities, should always bear in mind the educational and cultural profile of the young people at the end of high school.
Influence of sample preparation on analytical results: drug analysis [GC/MS] on hair snippets versus hair powder using various extraction methods
1997
The comparison of aqueous extraction methods and hair extraction by organic solvents performed on hair powder as well as on hair snippets of the same sample revealed different qualities of the procedures. Qualitative and quantitative results by the same derivatization step and GC/MS detection demonstrated, that the risk of missing a drug substance is higher using hair snippets than after drug extraction on pulverised hair. Drug recovery for opiates, cocaine and benzoylecgonine from hair was found to be best in aqueous solvents or in methanol extracts. The results are discussed under the aspects of solid-phase extraction, the hair sample representing an inhomogenous material. The localisatio…
