Measured and predicted light attenuation in dense coastal upslope fog at 650, 850, and <inline-formula><math display="inline" overflow="scro…

2008

Free-space optics FSO has gained considerable importance in this decade of demand for high-bandwidth transmission capabilities. FSO can provide the last mile solution, but the availability and reliability issues concerned with it have received increasing attention and need thorough investigation. In this work, we present our results on fog attenu- ation measurement and prediction at wavelengths 650, 850, and 950 nm with peak values up to 500 dB/km. For the attenuation measurement, optical wavelengths are transmitted over the same path of fog in free air to a receiver, measuring the power at every wavelength. The measure- ment of fog attenuation was performed at the France Telecom RD free-sp…

Designing Precoding and Receive Matrices for Interference Alignment in MIMO Interference Channels

2017

Interference is a key bottleneck in wireless communication systems. Interference alignment is a management technique that align interference from other transmitters in the least possibly dimension subspace at each receiver and provides the remaining dimensions for free interference signal. An uncoordinated interference is an example of interference which cannot be aligned coordinately with interference from coordinated part; consequently, the performance of interference alignment approaches are degraded. In this paper, we propose a rank minimization method to enhance the performance of interference alignment in the presence of uncoordinated interference sources. Firstly, to obtain higher mu…

Efficient Simulation of Orthogonal Multicarrier Transmission over Multipath Fading Channels

2011

Filterbank orthogonal multicarrier transmission schemes, such as OFDM/OQAM, are currently under intense study for their spectral efficiency and suitability for the physical layer of Cognitive Radio. Nonetheless, the mathematical description of the signal is cumbersome, and closed form expressions for performance figures are not available, so performance analysis on fading channels has to be performed by means of simulations. We propose an algorithm for simulating the received signal over multipath frequency selective fading channels, based on Taylor series expansion of the channel transfer function. The proposed method is compared to the state-of-the-art FFT-based method in terms of computa…

An OFDM Receiver Exploiting Multipath Diversity

2008

We propose a novel receiver structure, to be employed with standard Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing transmitters, capable of exploiting the multipath diversity of wireless channels. The proposed technique is based on cancellation of inter-block interference arising in the guard interval and linear detection techniques. It features a low implementation complexity and is easily generalized to MIMO systems and non-linear detection techniques.

Modulation of surface plasmon coupling-in by one-dimensional surface corrugation

2008

Surface plasmon-polaritons have recently attracted renewed interest in the scientific community for their potential in sub-wavelength optics, light generation and non-destructive sensing. Given that they cannot be directly excited by freely propagating light due to their intrinsical binding to the metal surface, the light-plasmon coupling efficiency becomes of crucial importance for the success of any plasmonic device. Here we present a comprehensive study on the modulation (enhancement or suppression) of such coupling efficiency by means of one-dimensional surface corrugation. Our approach is based on simple wave interference and enables us to make quantitative predictions which have been …

Beer-Lambert law for optical tissue diagnostics: current state of the art and the main limitations.

2021

Abstract. Significance: Beer–Lambert law (BLL) is a widely used tool for contact and remote determination of absorber concentration in various media, including living tissues. Originally proposed in the 18th century as a simple exponential expression, it has survived numerous modifications and updates. The basic assumptions of this law may not be fulfilled in real measurement conditions. This can lead to mistaken or misinterpreted results. In particular, the effects to be additionally taken into account in the tissue measurements include anisotropy, scattering, fluorescence, chemical equilibria, interference, dichroism, spectral bandwidth disagreements, stray radiation, and instrumental eff…

Quantum walks as simulators of neutrino oscillations in a vacuum and matter

2016

We analyze the simulation of Dirac neutrino oscillations using quantum walks, both in vacuum and in matter. We show that this simulation, in the continuum limit, reproduces a set of coupled Dirac equations that describe neutrino flavor oscillations, and we make use of this to establish a connection with neutrino phenomenology, thus allowing to fix the parameters of the simulation for a given neutrino experiment. We also analyze how matter effects for neutrino propagation can be simulated in the quantum walk. In this way, important features, such as the MSW effect, can be incorporated. Thus, the simulation of neutrino oscillations with the help of quantum walks might be useful to explore the…

Measurement of the p(e,e′π+)n reaction close to threshold and at low Q2

2017

The cross section of the $p(e,e'\pi^+)n$ reaction has been measured for five kinematic settings at an invariant mass of $W = 1094$ MeV and for a four-momentum transfer of $Q^2 = 0.078$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$. The measurement has been performed at MAMI using a new short-orbit spectrometer (SOS) of the A1 collaboration, intended for detection of low-energy pions. The transverse and longitudinal cross section terms were separated using the Rosenbluth method and the transverse-longitudinal interference term has been determined from the left-right asymmetry. The experimental cross section terms are compared with the calculations of three models: DMT2001, MAID2007 and $\chi$MAID. The results show that we …

Can the Caper (Capparis spinosa L.) Still Be Considered a Difficult-to-Propagate Crop?

2021

As a perennial xerophytic shrub, characterized by plesiomorphic features, the caper (Capparis spinosa L.) is naturally spread throughout the Mediterranean basin and occupies an important ecological role, as well as an economic one, in traditional and specialized systems for commercial production. This species, in spite of its wide diffusion, is currently considered at risk of genetic erosion, mainly due to overgrazing and overharvesting for domestic uses and for trade. This situation is made more serious because of the lack of efficient propagation techniques, determining the caper as a “difficult-to-propagate species”. In this review, we report the main available sexual and vegetative prop…

Iron Determination in Fertilizers by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry: Study of Spectral and Interelement Effects at Different…

1996

Abstract Four analytical wavelengths of iron (238.204, 239.562, 259.940, and 240.488 nm) were tested for determination of Fe in fertilizers by inductively cou pled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP AES). Variations in measurements were caused by the changing interference pattern at different wave lengths evaluated by multiple linear regression. Thus, results obtained with different wavelengths are not comparable. Ca, P, and K were typical ele ments causing interference in almost all examined Fe wavelengths. Wavelength Fe II 238.204 nm is the best wavelength for determination of Fe in fertiliz ers by ICP-AES. Method accuracy is ± 8% at the ex amined Fe levels in fertilizers.
