Eutopic endometrium from women with endometriosis does not exhibit neurotrophic properties

2012

The role of neurotrophins in eutopic endometrium from endometriosis-patients was investigated in a prospective study using immunofluorescence-staining, Western blot and a neuronal growth assay. The nerve growth factor is expressed in primary endometrial cell culture from women with and without endometriosis. Western blot analysis of endometrial biopsies or uterine fluid from patients with and without endometriosis shows no difference in the neurotrophin expression. We could not find a difference between patients with and without endometriosis with regards to the neurite outgrowth of sensory ganglia when treated with conditioned cultured medium or uterine fluid. This result refutes the assum…

How can droplet formation occur in endodontically treated teeth during bonding procedures?

2008

PURPOSE: The aim of this in vivo study was to clarify how blistering formation occurs along intraradicular dentin bonded interfaces. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients were selected and post space was prepared in vivo in endodontically treated teeth. Post space was etched, dried with ethanol, and bonded with one of the following adhesive systems: All Bond 2, XP-Bond, Clearfil SE Bond, Xeno III. The four adhesives were considered as representative of each bonding system class. An additional group was prepared with phosphoric acid treatment + application of Pre-Bond unfilled resin of All Bond 2, without the use of the primer agent. Etching was avoided for self-etching materials. Replicas of the …

Significant others’ experience of hospitalized patients’ transfer to home: A systematic review and meta-synthesis

2018

Abstract Background Significant others are individuals representing family members or neighbors, friends, colleagues or members of the same household, who act as relatives or surrogates. Significant others play an important role when patients are transferred or discharged after hospitalization. Objective The objective of this review is to identify, appraise and synthesize the best available evidence exploring significant others’ experiences of the discharge or transfer of adult patients after hospitalization. Methods A qualitative comprehensive systematic review and meta aggregation. Types of participants Participants of this review are the ‘significant other(s); persons who are important o…

Mixed methods analysis of Health-Related Quality of Life in ambulant individuals affected with RYR1-related myopathies pre-post-N-acetylcysteine ther…

2020

Purpose: To characterize Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in ambulant individuals with RYR1-RM and to determine if a qualitative PRO tool (subjective self-assessment) complements PROMIS and Neuro-QoL scales to detect changes in HRQoL in ambulant individuals with RYR1-RM post N-acetylcysteine (NAC) treatment. Methods: The study used a mixed methods research (MMR) design applying methodological triangulation. Qualitative data were collected via semi-structured interviews using open-ended questions. Quantitative data were gathered through PROMIS and Neuro-QoL instruments. Additionally, qualitative data were transformed into quantitative data for subjective self-assessment and frequency a…

Effect of biomass features on oxygen transfer in conventional activated sludge and membrane bioreactor systems

2019

Abstract The aim of the present study was to compare the oxygen transfer efficiency in a conventional activated sludge and a membrane bioreactor system. The oxygen transfer was evaluated by means of the oxygen transfer coefficient and α-factor calculation, under different total suspended solids concentration, extracellular polymeric substances, sludge apparent viscosity and size of the flocs. The oxygen transfer coefficient and α-factor showed an exponential decreasing trend with total suspended solid, with a stronger oxygen transfer coefficient dependence in the conventional activated sludge compared to the membrane bioreactor. It was noted that the oxygen transfer coefficient in the conve…

High Pressure Inside Nanometer-Sized Particles Influences the Rate and Products of Chemical Reactions

2021

International audience; The composition of organic aerosol has a pivotal influence on aerosol properties such as toxicity and cloud droplet formation capability, which could affect both climate and air quality. However, a comprehensive and fundamental understanding of the chemical and physical processes that occur in nanometer-sized atmospheric particles remains a challenge that severely limits the quantification and predictive capabilities of aerosol formation pathways. Here, we investigated the effects of a fundamental and hitherto unconsidered physical property of nanoparticles-the Laplace pressure. By studying the reaction of glyoxal with ammonium sulfate, both ubiquitous and important …

Evaluation of aging behavior under salt-fog spray conditions of green sandwich structures

2018

In this paper, the aging resistance of sandwich structures made with cork agglomerate as core and flax-reinforced polymeric laminates as face sheets was investigated for the first time. In order to evaluate their durability in a hostile environment, a sandwich plate was manufactured by vacuum bagging technique and aged under salt-fog spray conditions, according to ASTM B 117 standard. The evolution of the sandwich mechanical properties during the aging exposition was analyzed by carrying out quasi-static flexural tests and Charpy impact tests both on unaged specimens and on specimens aged for 10, 25, and 60 days, respectively. The quasi-static experimental results showed that despite the sa…

Thermodynamic Behavior of Non-Ionic Tri-block Copolymers in Water at Three Temperatures

2006

Apparent molar volumes (V Φ) of aqueous solutions of some copolymers, based on ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO) units, were determined as functions of concentration at three temperatures. Viscosity measurements were also carried out on some of these systems. The effects studied include how the molecular architecture and the molecular weight affect the aggregation of the copolymer, keeping constant the EO/PO ratio. Modeling of the volumetric data yielded the partial molar volume of the copolymer in the standard (V°) and the aggregated (V M) states, as well as the equilibrium constant for micellization and the aggregation number. Analysis of the viscosity data supported the insigh…
