Regulations and Practices of Polymer Recycling in NATO Countries
1998
Environmental policy in all European NATO countries, with reference to legal regulations about recycling, are nearly the same as the environmental policy in European Community, EC.
Forest operations in coppice: Environmental assessment of two different logging methods
2016
Wood is a renewable resource and it actively contributes to enhance energy production under a sustainable perspective. However, harvesting, transport and use of wood imply several consequences and impacts on environment. There are different ways for managing forests dedicated to wood production and a sustainable approach is fundamental to preserve the resource. In this context, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a useful tool for estimating the environmental impacts related to renewable resources. Traditional coppice is a common approach for forest management in several areas, including southern Europe and, specifically, Italy, Spain and the Balkans. Due to different terrain conditions, differe…
<title>Tradeoff between environmental impacts and economic benefits?: A case study of the Finnish and British pulp and paper industries</tit…
2001
Due to the increased used paper collection rates in Western Europe, more recycled fibre will be used in the manufacture of paper. This will affect both the environmental and economic performance of the pulp and paper industry. The potential for the increase of the collection rate varies significantly in different countries in western Europe. In some countries the collection rate is already close to 70% (Austria, Germany) and in others it is around 45% (Italy, United Kingdom). With the increased demand for recycled fibre also the collection will increase. When the collection of waste paper is increased something has to be done with the collected paper. Different utilisation modes results in …
Strategic Vision of a Euro-Mediterranean Port City: A Case Study of Palermo
2013
Italian harbours assume a decisive role in order to develop a Euro-Mediterranean web for maritime transportation. The geostrategic position of the Italian peninsula can be seen as a logistic platform at the centre of the maritime trades in the Mediterranean area, giving to its port cities the role of gateway of economic flows. The port poles, meant as hubs, are able to attract investments and create economic growth and territorial development through new operative models of urban usage and management. The management policies have to consider the environmental characteristics and distinctive features, respecting the identity of the places as concrete evidence of history, a source of intellec…
A Method to Evaluate Voltages to Earth During an Earth Fault in an HV Network in a System of Interconnected Earth Electrodes of MV/LV Substations
2008
An easy and swift method to evaluate, in a system of interconnected earth electrodes, earth potentials on earthing systems of medium-voltage/low-voltage (MV/LV) substations, in an event of single-line-to-earth fault inside a high-voltage/medium- voltage (HV/MV) station, is presented. The advantage of the method is the simplicity of the mathematical model for solving complex systems of any size with a sufficient accuracy for practical purposes. This paper shows the results of simulations, performed on networks with different extensions and characteristics, organized in easy-to-read graphs and tables. A comparison of these results with the values obtained according to the procedure explained …
Investigating the effect of distributed generators on traditional protection in radial distribution systems
2013
The recent changes in power network structure, development in green energy technologies and increased attention on environmental concerns have led to increase the installation of renewable energy based distributed generations (DG) in distribution networks. The increasing penetration of distributed generation in the distribution power system creates new technical and economical challenges; protection is one important topic of these challenges. High penetration of DG will have unfavorable impact on the traditional protection methods; the impact depends on the number, location and size of injected DG. To ensure safe and selective protection devices coordination, the impact of DG should be take…
Laws, Regulations, Standards, and Guidelines for the Protection of Man Against Mechanical Vibration
1986
Regulations that serve to protect workers from the dangers arising from mechanical vibration have been established by the legislators and agencies responsible for work protection, such as ministries of labor and social affairs and industrial insurance organizations. Furthermore, international agreements have also established such protective measures. The corresponding laws, rules or agreements relate to: 1. Occupational diseases 2. Criteria for the evaluation of risk from mechanical vibration and the establishment of exposure limit values 3. Guidelines for the measurement and evaluation of vibration 4. Medical examinations before employment and regular health examinations 5. Technical and o…
Passive-damping design for vibration control of large structures
2013
In this work, a systematic strategy to design passive damping systems for structural vibration control is presented. The proposed design methodology is based on the equivalence between decentralized static velocity-feedback controllers and passive damping systems. By using recent developments in static output-feedback control, the design of passivedamping systems can be formulated as a single optimization problem with Linear Matrix Inequality constraints. Moreover, this optimization problem can be efficiently solved with standard numerical tools, even for large dimension systems. Due to its computational effectiveness, the proposed methodology can be applied to the design of passive damping…
Renewable energy sources to fulfill the global energy needs of a country: The case study of Malta in Mediterranean Sea
2016
The paper shows the advantages using different energy resources for the islands of Malta. Moreover, this work is focused on the analysis of the wave energy potential along Malta's coasts. This important resource can be exploited to produce electrical energy using an innovative Point Absorber based on a new generator prototype realized by University of Palermo. The use of renewable source will reduce greenhouses emissions and increase the energy independence of Malta. The procedures applied in the present article, as well as the main equations used, are the result of previous applications made in different technical fields that show a good replicability [1]-[7].
Experimental evaluation of an hybrid communication system architecture for smart grid applications
2015
In this paper a new communication system architecture is proposed for the development of a SCADA system which can remotely monitor and control intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) connected to the low voltage distribution networks, i.e low voltage smart meter (SM), interface protection devises (IPS). New distributed metering systems and interface devices, together with a proper communication infrastructure (HiperLAN and narrowband power line communication (NB-PLC) on low voltage network), have been developed to allow monitoring the whole power system and controlling the distributed generators of a Smart Grid also in the presence of harmonic distortions. In this way, the electrical energy d…
