Analysis of local scour downstream of bed sills: preliminary results of an experimental work

Bed sills are often used to limit bed degradation, to control bed erosion around bridge piers or downstream stilling basins of dams. In this paper, the local scour that takes place downstream of the bed sill, in addition to the general erosion process, is examined. The data collected during experimental work are used to analyse the applicability of the relationship found in the literature and to define the relation between the maximum scour depth and the flow rate.

Entanglement robustness via spatial deformation of identical particle wave functions

We address the problem of entanglement protection against surrounding noise by a procedure suitably exploiting spatial indistinguishability of identical subsystems. To this purpose, we take two initially separated and entangled identical qubits interacting with two independent noisy environments. Three typical models of environments are considered: amplitude damping channel, phase damping channel and depolarizing channel. This study evaluated the effects of recreational Paracentrotus lividus fishing on average density and size of this edible sea urchin, and its indirect effects on Arbacia lixula on barren substrates of Ustica Island MPA (SW Italy, Mediterranean Sea). Size, single and pooled species densities, density of large individuals (>40 mm long) and small individuals (<20 mm long) of the two species were estimated by scuba diving in autumn 2003, spring and summer 2004 at two sites impacted by P. lividus fishing (Punta Cavazzi and Pagliaro, take zone C) and one control (Cala Sidoti, no take zone).
