Childcare and parental work schedules: a comparison of childcare arrangements among Finnish, British and Dutch dual-earner families
2015
This study examined the association between parental work schedules and non-parental childcare arrangements among dual-earner families in Finland, the Netherlands and the UK. Data from the ‘Families 24/7’ web-survey were used, including 937 parents with children aged 0-12 years. Results showed a negative association between non-standard work and formal childcare across all countries. A similar association was found for using a combination of formal and informal childcare, whereas solely using informal childcare was not associated with work characteristics. Country differences showed that, compared with Finland, the probability of using formal childcare was lower in the Netherlands, whereas …

Linking Facebook to WordPress for educational purposes – a proposed architecture sustaining social learning
2020
Ensuring social educational processes does not only represent a trend in terms of the evolution of e-Learning systems, but also one of the main points of interest targeted by the developers of certain social platforms. In fact, raising awareness with respect to the importance of using Social Media tools in education leads to a two-way approach: both by integrating social tools into e-Learning systems and by integrating learning facilities into Social Media platforms. Over time, the social network Facebook has benefited from intense use at global level, including in e-Learning processes. In order to meet the current needs in terms of teaching and learning, Facebook has provided users with bu…
The global economic crisis as a critical Juncture? The crisis's impact on migration movements and policies in Europe and the US
2016
The current global economic crisis has resulted in the strongest recession in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries since the Great Depression in the early 1930s and the 1970s oil shocks. This special issue sets out to explore how the most recent economic crisis impacted immigration and immigration-related policy in the United States of America and in European countries that are part of the OECD. The crisis of the late 2000s was offset by the collapse of the subprime US housing market, destabilising the financial system and leading to a sovereign debt crisis. The shock was marked by a “sudden […] deterioration of most, or all, key macroeconomic indicator…
A Lesson in Tolerance? Juvenile Justice in Italy
2005
Authoritarian crime control, driven in particular by notions of zero tolerance, appears to be a growing feature of many, if not all, systems of juvenile justice across Europe. Notions of meeting needs and welfare support for marginalised and deprived children seem to have collapsed. This article examines in some detail the case of Italian juvenile justice which appears to have followed a somewhat different path over the past decade. Since a new penal law about juvenile deviance was enforced in 1988, decarceration and significant decreases in daily counts of youth incarceration have been notable trends. How has this been made possible? This article explores how tolerance and leniency are ex…
Children's participatory budgets as a civic learning methodology. An exploratory study on the Spanish experience.
2021
International audience; The present research work aims to analyze, in an exploratory way, the main characteristics of child participatory budgets during 2019 in eight Spanish municipalities. The experiences of child budgeting are not well institutionalized. In general terms, when a participatory process is finished, all informational traces usually disappear. This study uses the comparative methodology with a theoretical framework based on Hart’s participation ladder and democratic civic participation. Three hypotheses have been generated and, among the main preliminary conclusions, it is highlighted that in all the cases analyzed the educational and civic training component prevails, in wh…
Le mérite contre la justice
2019
Administrative Capacity as a Constraint to Fiscal Decentralization. The Case of Romania and Poland
2020
This paper considers the problem of administrative capacity as one of the main requirements that the accession countries seeking EU membership had to meet, and as a prerequisite to the decentralization of their public sectors and public finances. The selected decentralization problems are analyzed using the cases of two countries: Romania and Poland. The results of a theoretical and practical evaluation of administrative capacity as a likely obstacle to fiscal decentralization are presented taking account of the different levels of decentralization in Poland and Romania. A comparative analysis of Romania and Poland shows that administrative capacity can be a constraint for fiscal decentrali…
Interconceptualizing Europe and Peace : Identity Building Under the European Heritage Label
2019
AbstractThis chapter investigates how peace is used in attempts to build a collective identity for the European Union in the context of the European Heritage Label (EHL), a central instrument in the EU’s cultural heritage policy. The official EHL documents and the websites of the EHL sites are analysed using a conceptual approach that particularly focuses on the interconceptualizations between peace and Europe. The ways peace is discussed can be divided into four thematic categories: treaties, institutions, practices, and symbols related to peace. The chapter concludes that heritage related to peace is mainly discussed in a non-contradictory manner, with little space for dissonance.
