A method for the probabilistic analysis of nonlinear systems

1995

Abstract The probabilistic description of the response of a nonlinear system driven by stochastic processes is usually treated by means of evaluation of statistical moments and cumulants of the response. A different kind of approach, by means of new quantities here called Taylor moments, is proposed. The latter are the coefficients of the Taylor expansion of the probability density function and the moments of the characteristic function too. Dual quantities with respect to the statistical cumulants, here called Taylor cumulants, are also introduced. Along with the basic scheme of the method some illustrative examples are analysed in detail. The examples show that the proposed method is an a…

Chemo-orientation responses in hymenopteran parasitoids induced by substrate-borne semiochemicals

2013

Hymenopteran parasitoids can utilize substrate-borne semiochemicals released by conspecifics or by their hosts, increasing the likelihood of successful mating and host location. According to the literature, two substrate-borne chemo-orientation patterns can occur: (1) biased random searching, a non-directional reaction toward the chemicals (kinesis), and (2) trailfollowing searching, a directional response toward the source emitting the chemical compounds (taxis). These two different strategies can be adopted by parasitoids to locate hosts and mates. In host location, random searching is induced by allelochemicals indirectly associated with the host, whereas trail-following behavior is indu…

How diffusivity, thermocline and incident light intensity modulate the dynamics of Deep Chlorophyll Maximum in Tyrrhenian Sea

2015

During the last few years theoretical works have shed new light and proposed new hypotheses on the mechanisms which regulate the spatio-temporal behaviour of phytoplankton communities in marine pelagic ecosystems. Despite this, relevant physical and biological issues, such as effects of the time- dependent mixing in the upper layer, competition between groups, and dynamics of non-stationary deep chlorophyll maxima, are still open questions. In this work, we analyze the spatio-temporal behaviour of five phytoplankton populations in a real marine ecosystem by using a one-dimensional reaction-diffusion-taxis model. The study is performed, taking into account the seasonal variations of environm…

Dynamics of Two Picophytoplankton Groups in Mediterranean Sea: Analysis of the Deep Chlorophyll Maximum by a Stochastic Advection-Reaction-Diffusion …

2013

A stochastic advection-reaction-diffusion model with terms of multiplicative white Gaussian noise, valid for weakly mixed waters, is studied to obtain the vertical stationary spatial distributions of two groups of picophytoplankton, i.e., picoeukaryotes and Prochlorococcus, which account about for 60% of total chlorophyll on average in Mediterranean Sea. By numerically solving the equations of the model, we analyze the one-dimensional spatio-temporal dynamics of the total picophytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentration along the water column at different depths. In particular, we integrate the equations over a time interval long enough, obtaining the steady spatial distributions for th…

Approximations in Statistics from a Decision-Theoretical Viewpoint

1987

The approximation of the probability density p(.) of a random vector x∊X by another (possibly more convenient) probability density q(.) which belongs to a certain class Q is analyzed as a decision problem where the action space is the class Qof available approximations, the relevant uncertain event is the actual value of the vector x and the utility function is a proper scoring rule. The logarithmic divergence is shown to play a rather special role within this approach. The argument lies entirely within a Bayesian framework.

0450 Preventing and promoting musculoskeletal health at the workplace through the design and evaluation of an innovative multicomponent intervention:…

2017

Objectives Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are main cause of work absence, reducing sustainability of working trajectories. The objective of INTEVAL_Spain project is to assess the effectiveness of a multifactorial intervention at the workplace to prevent MSD. Methods The intervention comprises evidence-based primary (participatory ergonomics-PE), secondary and tertiary prevention (case management-CM), and health promotion targeted to MSD. All components are integrated and require full coordination. A cluster randomized trial with a late intervention control group is being implemented to evaluate its effectiveness. Quantitative and qualitative information is being obtained from databases of …

The simplex dispersion ordering and its application to the evaluation of human corneal endothelia

2009

A multivariate dispersion ordering based on random simplices is proposed in this paper. Given a R^d-valued random vector, we consider two random simplices determined by the convex hulls of two independent random samples of sizes d+1 of the vector. By means of the stochastic comparison of the Hausdorff distances between such simplices, a multivariate dispersion ordering is introduced. Main properties of the new ordering are studied. Relationships with other dispersion orderings are considered, placing emphasis on the univariate version. Some statistical tests for the new order are proposed. An application of such ordering to the clinical evaluation of human corneal endothelia is provided. Di…

Iterated Conditionals and Characterization of P-Entailment

2021

In this paper we deepen, in the setting of coherence, some results obtained in recent papers on the notion of p-entailment of Adams and its relationship with conjoined and iterated conditionals. We recall that conjoined and iterated conditionals are suitably defined in the framework of conditional random quantities. Given a family \(\mathcal {F}\) of n conditional events \(\{E_{1}|H_{1},\ldots , E_{n}|H_{n}\}\) we denote by \(\mathcal {C}(\mathcal {F})=(E_{1}|H_{1})\wedge \cdots \wedge (E_{n}|H_{n})\) the conjunction of the conditional events in \(\mathcal F\). We introduce the iterated conditional \(\mathcal {C}(\mathcal {F}_{2})|\mathcal {C}(\mathcal {F}_{1})\), where \(\mathcal {F}_{1}\)…

Lower and Upper Probability Bounds for Some Conjunctions of Two Conditional Events

2018

In this paper we consider, in the framework of coherence, four different definitions of conjunction among conditional events. In each of these definitions the conjunction is still a conditional event. We first recall the different definitions of conjunction; then, given a coherent probability assessment (x, y) on a family of two conditional events \(\{A|H,B|K\}\), for each conjunction \((A|H) \wedge (B|K)\) we determine the (best) lower and upper bounds for the extension \(z=P[(A|H) \wedge (B|K)]\). We show that, in general, these lower and upper bounds differ from the classical Frechet-Hoeffding bounds. Moreover, we recall a notion of conjunction studied in recent papers, such that the res…

Existence, uniqueness and comparison results for BSDEs with Lévy jumps in an extended monotonic generator setting

2018

We show existence of a unique solution and a comparison theorem for a one-dimensional backward stochastic differential equation with jumps that emerge from a L\'evy process. The considered generators obey a time-dependent extended monotonicity condition in the y-variable and have linear time-dependent growth. Within this setting, the results generalize those of Royer (2006), Yin and Mao (2008) and, in the $L^2$-case with linear growth, those of Kruse and Popier (2016). Moreover, we introduce an approximation technique: Given a BSDE driven by Brownian motion and Poisson random measure, we consider BSDEs where the Poisson random measure admits only jumps of size larger than $1/n$. We show con…
