Experimental and fluid dynamic study of continuous supercritical water gasification of glucose

2016

Abstract The supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of glucose as a model compound for H 2 production is studied in term of process development at 25 MPa and 650 °C. Gasification has been investigated using a laboratory scale continuous plant comprising a continuous down flow reactor with a volume of 200 cm 3 , a heat recovery section and pre-heat of the biomass to simulate more closely an industrial design. Feed streams (pure water and glucose solution) are introduced at the top of the vessel and products are extracted from the bottom. The reactor is equipped with various inlet points that allow to modify the inlet position of reacting streams in order to study the effect of stream mixing…

Study on a photocatalytic membrane reactor for water purification

2000

Abstract Some results obtained in a photocatalytic membrane reactor, to be used for degradation of toxic organic species dissolved in water, are reported. The catalyst, TiO 2 P25 Degussa, was immobilised by means of a flat sheet polymeric membrane and 4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) was used as a model molecule to evaluate the reactor performance. A preliminary investigation of the stability, under UV irradiation, of some eligible polymeric membranes was carried out by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (OM), determinations of water permeation flux (WPF) and total organic carbon (TOC). These tests showed that commercial membranes made of fluoride + PP (FS 50 PP-Dow), polysulp…

CO2 conversion in a photocatalytic continuous membrane reactor

2016

The reduction of CO2 with water by using photocatalysts is one of the most promising new methods for achieving CO2 conversion to valuable hydrocarbons such as methanol (MeOH). In this work, prepared TiO2-Nafion (TM)-based membranes were used in a photocatalytic membrane reactor, operated in continuous mode, for converting CO2 to methanol. By using the membrane with the best TiO2 distribution, a MeOH flow rate/TiO2 weight of 45 mu mol (g(catalyst) h)(-1) was measured when operating at 2 bar of feed pressure. This value is higher than those reported in most of the literature data to date. Moreover, methanol production is considered as a relevant advance over the existing literature results wh…

Aerobic granular sludge treating shipboard slop: Analysis of total petroleum hydrocarbons loading rates on performances and stability

2018

Abstract The work focuses on the feasibility of treating slop with aerobic granular sludge. For this purpose, a 3.5 L granular sequencing batch reactor was activated and it was monitored for 156 days. The experimental campaign was divided into two periods, named Period I (100 days) and Period II (56 days). Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration in the slop was, on average, equal to 6.8 ± 1.5 mg L−1 and 13 ± 1.5 mg L−1 in Period I and Period II respectively. The obtained results during the first experimental period indicated that about 80 days were required to reach steady state with mature granules, when TPHs removal efficiency was approximately 90%. The results indicated that both…

In situ generation of Co(II) by use of a solid-phase reactor in an FIA assembly for the spectrophotometric determination of penicillamine

2005

[EN] A flow injection analysis (FIA) manifold for the determination of penicillamine in pharmaceutical preparations is proposed. The manifold includes a solid-phase reactor for the in situ production of the derivatizing reagent, Co(II) ion, which forms a coloured complex with penicillamine in an alkaline medium. The reactor is prepared by natural immobilization of cobalt carbonate on a polymer matrix, which endows it with a high mechanical and microbiological stability. The cobalt released by passage of a 5 x 10(-4) Mol l(-1) sulphuric acid stream at a flow-rate of 2.3 ml min(-1) is merged with a volume of 314 mu l of sample containing penicillamine in ammonium-ammonia buffer at pH 9.5 to m…

Anaerobic thermophilic (55°C) treatment of TMP whitewater in reactors based on biomass attachment and entrapment

1999

Abstract Thermomechanical pulping (TMP) whitewater was treated in thermophilic (55°C) anaerobic laboratory-scale reactors using three different reactor configurations. In all reactors up to 70 % COD removals were achieved. The anaerobic hybrid reactor, composed of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) and a filter, gave degradation rates up to 10 kg COD/m 3 d at loading rates of 15 kg COD/m 3 d and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 3.1 hours. The anaerobic multi-stage reactor, consisting of three compartments, each packed with granular sludge and carrier elements, gave degradation rates up to 9 kg COD/m 3 d at loading rates of 15–16 kg COD/m 3 d, and HRT down to 2.6 hours. Start-up with or without inoculum? Analysis of an SMBR pilot plant.

2010

This study analysed a submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) start-up with the purpose of determining the best conditions to carry it out. In order to do this, a hollow fibre membrane module was installed in a submerged configuration in a pilot aerobic reactor. The experiment was then divided in two phases, lasting 65 days each. During phase 1, the pilot plant was started-up without inoculum of activated sludge and no sludge, withdrawal was performed. Conversely, in phase 2, the MBR pilot plant was started-up with sludge inoculum and the sludge concentration was kept constant. In both phases, the volumetric loading rate applied to the pilot plant was kept constant. The authors analysed the di…

Further improvements of the water-cooled Pb–17Li blanket

2001

Abstract The water-cooled lithium–lead (WCLL) blanket is based on reduced-activation ferritic–martensitic steel as the structural material, the liquid alloy Pb–17Li as breeder and neutron multiplier, and water at typical PWR conditions as coolant. It was developed for DEMO specifications and shall be tested in ITER. In 1999, a reactor parameter optimization was performed in the EU which yielded improved specifications of what could be an attractive fusion power plant. Compared to DEMO, such a power reactor would be different in lay-out, size and performance, thus requiring to better exploit the potential of the WCLL blanket concept in conjunction with a water-cooled divertor. Several new ap…

On the thermo-mechanical behaviour of DEMO water-cooled lithium lead equatorial outboard blanket module

2017

Abstract Within the framework of EUROfusion R&D activities an intense research campaign has been carried out at the University of Palermo, in close cooperation with ENEA Brasimone, in order to investigate the thermo-mechanical performances of the DEMO water-cooled lithium lead breeding blanket (WCLL). In particular, attention has been paid to the most recent geometric configuration of the DEMO WCLL outboard equatorial module, as designed by WCLL project team during 2015, endowed with an attachment system based on the use of radial pins, purposely outlined to connect the module back-plate to its back-supporting structure, that have been properly considered to simulate more realistically the …

Numerical study of the growth conditions in an MOCVD reactor: application to the epitaxial growth of HgTe

2002

Abstract In order to analyse the epitaxial growth by metalorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) of mercury telluride, HgTe, a 2D numerical model has been developed to simulate the gas flow in a horizontal MOCVD reactor. This model takes into account the Navier–Stokes equations coupled with the heat transfer and mass transport of chemical species. For the mathematical resolution of the governing equations a commercial solver, which can be run in a conventional personal computer, has been used. The study carried out presents a discussion about the dominant growth regime in a MOCVD growth as a function of different parameters: substrate temperature, total flow, partial pressure of precurs…
