Chronometric evidence for memory retrieval in causal conditional reasoning: The case of the association strength effect

According to many models of conditional reasoning, correct responses to the uncertain forms affirmation of consequent (AC) and denial of antecedent (DA) rely on the retrieval of an alternative antecedent from semantic memory. The main prediction issuing from this hypothesis of online retrieval is that the associative strength of the relevant information in long-term memory affects the latency of its retrieval and then of the correct response of uncertainty to AC and DA. Facilitating Effect of Natural Frequencies: Size Does Not Matter

The question of whether humans are able to work in a Bayesian way is currently a topic of substantial investigation. An important finding, reported by Gigerenzer and Hoffrage in 1995 is that Bayesian reasoning is facilitated when the information format corresponds to natural frequencies. The present concern was whether the facilitating effect of frequencies persists when natural frequencies relate to samples which are not convenient multiples of 10. 150 undergraduates participated as volunteers (42 men, 108 women; M age = 23 yr.). Analysis showed the effect of natural frequency formats was not dependent on size of reference class. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Moral reasoning and moral conflict in patients of the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – Frontotemporal dementia spectrum

The aim of this study was to investigate the moral reasoning and moral conflict in patients of the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – frontotemporal dementia (ALSFTD) spectrum. Ten ALS patients without cognitive impairment, 10 ALS patients with cognitive or behavioral impairment, 10 ALSFTD patients and 23 controls were examined with neuropsychological and behavioral tests as well as with a set of eight well -designed moral dilemmas. Abstract Human brain lesion studies first investigated the biological roots of cognitive functions including language in the late 1800s. Neuroimaging studies have reported correlation findings with general intelligence predominantly in fronto-parietal cortical areas. However, there is still little evidence about the relationship between verbal intelligence and structural properties of the brain. Feelings or cognitions? Moral cognitions and emotions as longitudinal predictors of prosocial and aggressive behaviors

Abstract There is debate regarding the roles of sociomoral cognitions and emotions in understanding moral development. The short-term longitudinal relations among perspective taking, sympathy, prosocial moral reasoning, prosocial behaviors and aggression in adolescents were examined. Participants were 489 students ( M age = 12.28 years, SD  = .48; 232 boys) in public and private schools from predominantly middle class families in Valencia, Spain. Inductive synthesis of dot expressions

We consider the problem of the synthesis of algorithms by sample computations. We introduce a formal language, namely, the so-called dot expressions, which is based on a formalization of the intuitive notion of ellipsis (‘...’). Whilst formally the dot expressions are simply a language describing sets of words, on the other hand, it can be considered as a programming language supporting quite a wide class of programs. Designed Examples as Mediating Tools: Introductory Algebra in Two Norwegian Grade 8 Classrooms

A critical element in the introduction of algebra is to focus student attention on the basic ideas of algebraic reasoning including the use of concepts such as variable and algebraic expression. In the Norwegian classrooms, representing a student-centered instructional philosophy, the teachers utilized examples and problems that they themselves had designed, and the examples involved resources such as concrete objects and body movements in order to make algebra accessible to students. When designing these examples, teachers thus used their own previous experiences of teaching algebra in an attempt to articulate the passage from arithmetic to algebra.
