Green composites for fertilizer controlled release produced by compression molding and FDM

2023

Excessive fertilization causes ecological problems due to leaching issues. To solve this problem and promote agriculture sustainability an innovative green composite for controlled release fertilizers was produced by adding NPK fertilizer flour to a biodegradable polymer with or without Opuntia Ficus Indica (OFI) particles. Six formulations were produced and employed for the fabrication of devices both for compression molding (CM) and fused deposition modeling (FDM). Both fillers displayed a good dispersion in the composites, excellent adhesion with the polymeric matrix and effectively acted as reinforcement. The decrease of NPK release rate (up to 30 days) was achieved using whole composit…

Lactate level and handgrip test in migraine and fibromyalgia after self-myofascial release treatment

2019

The Aim of the study was to determine the effect of self-myofascial release (SMFR) treatment on handgrip test score in patients with fibromyalgia and migraine, investigating also if the lactate levels influenced the result. Twenty-five subjects affected by migraine (age 49.7±12.5; height 164.9±6.62 cm; weight 68.6±16.9 kg) and ten subjects affected by fibromyalgia (age 43.7±21.2; height 158±5.65 cm; weight 70±28.9 kg) were enrolled in the study. The assessments included a handgrip test, in order to evaluate isometric strength of both hands and forearm muscles and the lactate levels evaluation. The treatment was performed in the three most painful trigger points indicated from subjects as to…

Multicomponent Antibiofilm Lipid Nanoparticles as Novel Platform to Ameliorate Resveratrol Properties: Preliminary Outcomes on Fibroblast Proliferati…

2023

The well-being of skin and mucous membranes is fundamental for the homeostasis of the body and thus it is imperative to treat any lesion quickly and correctly. In this view, polyphenols might assist and enhance a successful wound healing process by reducing the inflammatory cascade and the production of free radicals. However, they suffer from disadvantageous physico–chemical properties, leading to restricted clinical use. In this work, a complex mixture of PEGylated lipid, Glyceryl monoester, 18-β-Glycyrrhetinic Acid and Menthol was designed to entrap Resveratrol (RSV) as the active ingredient and further produce lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) by homogenization followed by high-freq…

Enzyme-responsive intracellular-controlled release using silica mesoporous nanoparticles capped with ε-poly-L-lysine.

2014

The synthesis and characterization of two new capped silica mesoporous nanoparticles for controlled delivery purposes are described. Capped hybrid systems consist of MCM-41 nanoparticles functionalized on the outer surface with polymer epsilon-poly-L-lysine by two different anchoring strategies. In both cases, nanoparticles were loaded with model dye molecule [Ru(bipy)(3)](2+). An anchoring strategy involved the random formation of urea bonds by the treatment of propyl isocyanate-functionalized MCM-41 nanoparticles with the lysine amino groups located on the epsilon-poly-L-lysine backbone (solid Ru-rLys-S1). The second strategy involved a specific attachment through the carboxyl terminus of…

Protein delivery based on uncoated and chitosan-coated mesoporous silicon microparticles

2011

Mesoporous silicon is a biocompatible, biodegradable material that is receiving increased attention for pharmaceutical applications due to its extensive specific surface. This feature enables to load a variety of drugs in mesoporous silicon devices by simple adsorption-based procedures. In this work, we have addressed the fabrication and characterization of two new mesoporous silicon devices prepared by electrochemistry and intended for protein delivery, namely: (i) mesoporous silicon microparticles and (ii) chitosan-coated mesoporous silicon microparticles. Both carriers were investigated for their capacity to load a therapeutic protein (insulin) and a model antigen (bovine serum albumin) …

Transdermal and Skin-Targeted Drug Delivery

1997

Background: The application of therapeutic agents to the skin addresses three general objectives: (a) the treatment of a variety of dermatologic diseases; (b) the “targeted” delivery of drugs to deeper subcutaneous tissues, with a concomitant reduction in systemic exposure; and (c) socalled transdermal administration to elicit a systemic pharmacologic effect. Objective: Recently, significant progress towards all three goals has been recorded and the level of research and development activity remains high. We aim to discuss these advances from mechanistic and clinical standpoints. Results: For the topical treatment of skin disease, novel vehicles (e.g., stabilized, supersaturated systems and…

Polysaccharide/polyaminoacid composite scaffolds for modified DNA release.

2009

Abstract In this work composite polymeric films or sponges, based on hyaluronic acid (HA) covalently crosslinked with α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)(2-aminoethylcarbamate)- d , l -aspartamide (PE), have been prepared and characterized as local gene delivery systems. In particular, HA/PE scaffolds have been loaded with PE/DNA interpolyelectrolyte complexes, employing PE as a macromolecular crosslinker for HA and as a non-viral vector for DNA. In vitro studies showed that HA/PE films and sponges have high compatibility with human dermal fibroblasts and they give a sustained DNA release, whose trend can be easily tailored by varying the crosslinking ratio between HA and PE. Fatigue crack growth in welds based on a V-notch model for the short crack propagation at the toe

2018

Abstract This work presents a new fatigue crack growth prediction model for non-load-carrying fillet welded steel joints. For this joint configuration the fatigue cracks will emanate from the weld toe region. Due to the presence of a V-notch in this region the crack initiation point becomes a point of singularity for the stress field. This may in many cases make it difficult to determine the Stress Intensity Factor Range (SIFR) for small cracks by conventional methods based on Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM). The present approach solves this problem by using the Energy Release Rate (ERR) to determine the SIFR in the small crack growth regime. The model is fitted to crack growth cur…
