2020

Between the end of the sixteenth century and the first half of the Seventeenth Century, the intense building activity that affected the Maltese archipelago favored the diffusion of the innovations introduced in the projects for Valletta. The construction of new parish churches offered numerous opportunities for the experimentation of Renaissance architectural language, through the use of new decorative repertoires and the models offered by Italian treatises.

Gilding and pigments of Renaissance marble of Abatellis Palace: non-invasive investigation by XRF spectrometry

2012

Most of the artworks constituting the collection of Renaissance statuary of Abatellis Palace in Palermo (Sicily) show evidence of colour layers and fragments of gold foil that probably once covered the whole marble surface. The restoration of some of these statues has allowed to carry out archaeometric studies about the painting technique and to highlight the original materials and inclusion present on the precious marbles by two famous Italian sculptors of the Renaissance, Francesco Laurana and Antonello Gagini. The measurements have been performed in situ through the integrated use of two non-invasive techniques: visible fluorescence stimulated by ultraviolet light and X-ray fluorescence.…

The death penalty in Valencia (1450-1500), numbers, urban spaces and funeral ritualities from the Brotherhood of Innocents and Helpless

2021

Through a combination of documentary s…

Electron Crystallography – New Methods to Explore Structure and Properties of the Nano World

2012

Electron crystallography, as the branch of science that uses electron scattering, developed in the last century into a manifold and powerful approach to study the structure of matter. Major historical milestones of this development are discussed. Especially electron diffraction experienced recently a renaissance and grew into an established method of structure analysis. The techniques of data collection and processing available nowadays are described.

2020

A massive Polish presence in Italy, particularly during the 16th and 17th century, is the fact often referred to when the roots of Polish humanist culture is under discussion. Indeed, Poland has been the only state in Central and Eastern Europe which absorbed on a larger scale the ideals of the Renaissance. However, the assimilation of Italian culture was the case, as it seems, in just a certain number of students, particularly those who had contacts with the University of Padova and the culture which flourished in the Republic of Venice. The element that distinguished the Poles from the others was the idea of struggle, mainly spiritual struggle, in connection with the post-Tridentine cultu…

Pectin: A Long-Neglected Broad-Spectrum Antibacterial.

2020

First reported in the late 1930s and first partly explained in 1970, the antibacterial activity of pectin remained almost ignored until the late 1990s. The concomitant emergence of research on natural antibacterials and on new usages of pectin polysaccharides, including those in medicine widely researched in Russia, has led to a renaissance of research in the physiological properties of this uniquely versatile polysaccharide ubiquitous in plants and fruits. Collecting scattered information, this study provides an updated overview on the subtle factors affecting the behaviour of pectin as antimicrobial. Less degraded pectin extracted via acid-free routes, we argue in the conclusions, will so…
