Revisiting the role of embedding in Systemic Functional Linguistics : Construing depth in “big texts”

This paper is concerned with exploring the role of embedded genres in expanding the meaning potential of long texts, focusing especially on complex tertiary assignments. A significant body of work has evolved in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) on modelling “big texts” as macrogenres since Martin (1994: 29) posed the question how texts “get bigger than a page”. However, based on detailed genre analyses of high-scoring undergraduate business country reports, this paper illustrates that not all big texts are macrogenres made up of elemental genre complexes. The title tripeptide, C17H23N3O6, contains a nonproteinogenic C-terminal amino acid residue, norvaline, which is an isomer of the amino acid valine. Norvaline, unlike valine, has an unbranched side chain. The molecule has a Gly–Gly segment which adopts an extended conformation. The norvaline residue also adopts an extended backbone conformation while its side chain has ag+tconformation. In the crystal lattice, N—H...O and O—H...O hydrogen bonds stabilize the packing. Molecules translated along the crystallographicaaxis associate through an N—H...O hydrogen bond. The remaining three hydrogen bonds are between molecules related by a21screw axis.

North/south differences among Italian emerging adults regarding criteria deemed important for adulthood and life satisfaction

The main goal of this study was to compare Northern and Southern Italian emerging adult university students, regarding the importance attributed to criteria for adulthood and the levels of life and education satisfaction. Self-report questionnaires were filled by 475 Northern and Southern Italian University students (Age M = 22.91, 76% females, n = 359). Multivariate analysis of variance revealed that Southern emerging adults were more likely to place importance on family capacities, norm compliance, interdependence and role transitions as criteria for achieving adulthood than Northern emerging adults. The title compound, C16H23BrCl2O, was synthesized in three steps from β-himachalene (3,5,5,9-tetramethyl-2,4a,5,6,7,8-hexahydro-1H-benzocycloheptene), which was isolated from the essential oil of the Atlas cedar (cedrus atlantica). The molecule is built up from two fused six- and seven-membered rings, each linked to a three-membered ring. The six-membered ring has a screw-boat conformation, whereas the seven-membered ring displays a twist-boat conformation. The absolute structure was established unambiguously from anomalous dispersion effects.

In the crystal, molecules are connected into inversion dimers by pairs of N—H...S hydrogen bonds. The dimers are linked by weak π–π interactions, with centroid-to-centroid distances of 3.723 (11) Å, forming chains parallel to [110].
