La memoria fotografica dell’architettura : restituzioni prospettiche e ricostruzioni
2023
This book explores perspective restitution from photographs for the reconstruction of buildings and urban sites that no longer exist or have suffered many alterations over time. Digital drawing and modelling tools overcome many of the limitations that, in the past, made perspective restitution from photographs inaccurate and inconvenient. Traditional drawing tools made perspective restitution from photographs difficult, especially when vanishing points appeared at a great distance from the image frame. The results of perspective restitution were either 1D or 2D objects, i.e. points, segments, angles, planar figures and profiles, that were revolved into the picture plane. By contrast, digita…
Visual Culture and Cultural Heritage: ViC-CH a Synthesis Between Digital Representation and Heritage Experience
2019
The dissemination possibilities offered by digital technologies provide multiple ways of reading and fruition of the cultural heritage. In order to define a visualization and communication strategy through images, the paper shows some of the results of the ViC-CH Visual Culture and Cultural Heritage workshop, which involved the University of Trento and the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. The graphic elaborations focused on the Library of the Priest Seminar in Brixen; photomodelling, short films with drone shots and virtual visits have been some of the ways of manipulating the image for the animation and realistic visualization of a cultural heritage not easily accessible to date (The pape…
The Development of Visuo-spatial Memory: How to Remember Location
1992
Recent studies on developmental differences in spatial memory have reported equivocal results. Some found an age-dependent improvement of memory performance whereas others did not. The two studies reported here investigate age differences in memory for visual-spatial information. A picture reconstruction task with simultaneous presentation of scene-like visual-spatial arrangements was used. Subjects had to recognise objects and to reconstruct the initial spatial arrangement. The first study with 5to 10year-olds produced the typical age-dependent improvement in recognising visual material as well as in remembering the locations of specific objects. No effect for age was obtained in memory f…
Sistemi integrati per la visualizzazione immersiva
2015
$$PO^2$$ - A Process and Observation Ontology in Food Science. Application to Dairy Gels
2016
This paper focuses on the knowledge representation task for an interdisciplinary project called Delicious concerning the production and transformation processes in food science. The originality of this project is to combine data from different disciplines like food composition, food structure, sensorial perception and nutrition. Available data sets are described using different vocabularies and are stored in different formats. Therefore there is a need to define an ontology, called \(PO^2\) (Process and Observation Ontology), as a common and standardized vocabulary for this project. The scenario 6 of the NeON methodology was used for building \(PO^2\) and the core component is implemented i…
Conceptual graph operations for formal visual reasoning in the medical domain
2014
International audience; Objective - Conceptual graphs (CGs) are used to represent clinical guidelines because they support visual reasoning with a logical background, making them a potentially valuable representation for guidelines.Materials and methods - Conceptual graph formalism has an essential and basic component: a formal vocabulary that drives all of the other mechanisms, notably specialization and projection. The graph's theoretical operations, such as projection, rules, derivation, constraints, probabilities and uncertainty, support diagrammatic reasoning. Results - A conceptual graph's graphical user interface includes a multilingual vocabulary management, some query and decision-m…

Codebook is an effective image representation method. By clustering in local image descriptors, a codebook is shown to be a distinctive image feature and widely applied in object classification. In almost all existing works on codebooks, the building of the visual vocabulary follows a basic routine, that is, extracting local image descriptors and clustering with a user-designated number of clusters. The problem with this routine lies in that building a codebook for each single dataset is not efficient. In order to deal with this problem, we investigate the influence of vocabulary sizes on classification performance and vocabulary universality with the kNN classifier. Experimental results in…
Ontology languages for the semantic web: A never completely updated review
2006
This paper gives a never completely account of approaches that have been used for the research community for representing knowledge. After underlining the importance of a layered approach and the use of standards, it starts with early efforts used for artificial intelligence researchers. Then recent approaches, aimed mainly at the semantic web, are described. Coding examples from the literature are presented in both sections. Finally, the semantic web ontology creation process, as we envision it, is introduced.
Rethinking Political Representation from the Perspective of Rhetorical Genres
2019
This article is a thought experiment. It constructs ideal types of political representation in the sense of Max Weber. Inspired by Quentin Skinner and others, the aim is to give a rhetorical turn to contemporary debates on representation. The core idea is to claim an ‘elective affinity’ (Wahlverwandschaft, as Weber says following Goethe) between forms of representation and rhetorical genres of their justification. The four ideal types of political representation are designated as plebiscitary, diplomatic, advocatory, and parliamentary, corresponding to the epideictic, negotiating, forensic, and deliberative genres of rhetoric as the respective ways to plausibly appeal to the audience. I dis…
Domain Specific Knowledge Representation for an Intelligent Tutoring System to Teach Algebraic Reasoning
2012
Translation of word problems into symbolic notation is one of the most challenging steps in learning the algebraic method. This paper describes a domain-specific knowledge representation mechanism to support Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) which focus on this stage of the problem solving process. The description language proposed is based on the concept of a hypergraph and makes it possible to simultaneously a) represent all potential algebraic solutions to a given word problem; b) keep track of the student's actions; c) provide automatic remediation; and d) unequivocally determine the current state of the resolution process. An experimental evaluation with students at a public school su…
