Entrepreneurship Training and Self-Employment among University Graduates

2012

In economies characterized by low labor demand and high rates of youth unemployment, entrepreneurship training has the potential to enable youth to gain skills and create their own jobs. This paper presents experimental evidence on a new entrepreneurship track that provides business training and personalized coaching to university students in Tunisia. Undergraduates in the final year of licence appliquee were given the opportunity to graduate with a business plan instead of following the standard curriculum. This paper relies on randomized assignment of the entrepreneurship track to identify impacts on labor market outcomes one year after graduation. The analysis finds that the entrepreneur…

Understanding Decision Support in Large-Scale Disasters: Challenges in Humanitarian Logistics Distribution

2017

Disasters are characterized by conflicting, uncertain, or lacking data. Nevertheless, humanitarian responders need to make rapid decisions. This is particularly true for the immediate response to a sudden onset disaster. Since most humanitarian decision support systems (DSS) make important assumptions on data availability and quality that are often not fulfilled in practice, decision-makers are largely left to their experience. In this paper, we identify three major challenges for an operational DSS to support distribution planning: (i) deep uncertainty; (ii) reflecting field conditions and constraints; and (iii) rapid humanitarian logistics modeling. We review the relevant theories and pro…

Delay-oriented data traffic migration in maritime mobile communication environments

2012

Maritime ship-to-shore communication has to satisfy different user requirements while suffering dynamic communication circumstances. Satellite networks are the primary means to communicate between ship and shore. The idea of compensating the deficiency of satellite communication with other terrestrial networks is not new. However, focus was often on how to keep users always best connected, without considering respective application needs or the potential disconnections. In this paper, we propose a delay-oriented satellite data traffic migration solution, exploiting the route repetitiveness and predictability of ships, leveraging the delay tolerance of many communication applications, with t…

Nutrients associated with diseases related to aging: a new healthy aging diet index for elderly population

2018

Drivers, barriers and impacts of digitalisation in rural areas from the viewpoint of experts

2022

Abstract Context: The domain of rural areas, including rural communities, agriculture, and forestry, is going through a process of deep digital transformation. Digitalisation can have positive impacts on sustainability in terms of greater environmental control, and community prosperity. At the same time, it can also have disruptive effects, with the marginalisation of actors that cannot cope with the change. When developing a novel system for rural areas, requirements engineers should carefully consider the specific socio-economic characteristics of the domain, so that potential positive effects can be maximised, while mitigating negative impacts. Objective: The goal of this paper is to sup…

Optimal deadline assignment for periodic real-time tasks in dynamic priority systems

2006

Real-time systems are often designed using a set of periodic tasks. Task periods are usually set by the system requirements, but deadlines and computation times can be modified in order to improve system performance. Sensitivity analysis in real-time systems has focused on changes in task computation times using fixed priority analysis. Only a few studies deal with the modification of deadlines in dynamic priority scheduling. The aim of this work is to provide a sensitivity analysis for task deadlines in the context of dynamic-priority, pre-emptive, uniprocessor scheduling. In this paper, we present a deadline minimisation method that achieves the maximum reduction. As undertaken in other s…

Diferencias territoriales en el concepto de cooperativa protegida y especialmente protegida

2013

[EN] Following several studies on regional differences in fiscal impact produced by the application of tax law (Law 20/90) in Spanish cooperatives because of the existence of very different substantive regional law, we have considered to investigate only the requirements for the application of the special tax regime. These requirements, as set forth in Articles 6 and 13, refer to the substantive law, with significant turbulence and some important differences in taxation. So it would be convenient to consider to improve greater homogenization in future legislative for equity’s sake. Even for the more special scheme, the requirements set out in Articles 8 to 12, that are in a greater degree i…

Optimization on ports activation towards energy efficient data center networks

2018

Nowadays, Internet of thing including network support (i.e. checking social media, sending emails, video conferencing) requires smart and efficient data centers to support these services. Hence, data centers become more important and must be able to respond to ever changing service requirements and application demands. However, data centers are classified as one of the largest consumers of energy in the world. Existing topologies such as ScalNet improves the data center scalability while leading to enormous amounts of energy consumption. In this paper, we present a new energy efficient algorithm for ScalNet called Green ScalNet. The proposed topology strikes a compromise between maximizing …

The public procurement of information systems: dialectics in requirements specification

2017

When acquiring information systems, public entities face a dilemma. On the one hand, they want to procure the system that best suits their needs, which often requires lengthy dialogues with vendors. At the same time, they are restricted by government regulations that mandate limited dialogue in the interests of transparency and equal opportunities for all vendors. To examine how public entities deal with this, we followed three procurement projects in Norway. We show that this dilemma manifests itself as a dialectic between the thesis of getting the system requirements right and the antithesis of strictly adhering to regulations. Public entities search for a resolution of this dialectic thr…

General model for boring tool optimization

2016

Optimizing a tool (and therefore those for boring) consist in improving its performance through maximizing the objective functions chosen by the designer and/or by user. In order to define and to implement the proposed objective functions, contribute numerous features and performance required by tool users. Incorporation of new features makes the cutting tool to be competitive in the market and to meet user requirements.
