Aerobic Metabolism: Benefits from an Oxygenated World

In the preceding chapter, we have emphasized the dangers that the advent of dioxygen presented to the existing anaerobic organisms, and the ways they evolved to deal with the problems. However, this is only part of the story and were it to have ended here, we and the world we know would not exist. What happened instead was quite remarkable; for life seized upon an opportunity presented by the presence of free dioxygen to become many-fold more efficient in extracting energy from foodstuffs. As we shall see, this aerobic, oxidative metabolism opened in turn a multitude of new opportunities for growth and diversification.

Mitochondrial compartment: a possible target of cadmium effects on breast epithelial cells.

Cadmium–breast epithelial cell interactions were studied by analyzing some mitochondria-related aspects of stress response. We treated immortalized non-tumor breast cells with 5 or 50 μM CdCl2 for 24 or 96 h demonstrating that the exposure did not cause a significant mitochondrial proliferation, while it induced a significant increase in the respiratory activity and mitochondrial polarization. In addition, we found that hsp60 was up-regulated while hsp70 and COXII and COXIV were down-regulated. Responses of microbial activity and decomposer organisms to contamination in microcosms containing coniferous forest soil.

Soil respiration from microcosms contaminated with pentachlorophenol, 2-ethanolhexanoate, creosote, CuSO4, and benomyl was measured in order to evaluate usefulness of soil microcosms and microbial respiration rate monitoring as a toxicity test in soils with high organic matter content. Coniferous forest soil and its organisms were used as test objects. Background. Neurological pathogenesis is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and differences in neuronal/glial handling of oxygen and glucose. The main side effects attributed to efavirenz involve the CNS, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Methods. Human cell lines and rat primary cultures of neurons and astrocytes were treated with clinically relevant efavirenz concentration. AbstractPeatlands are carbon dioxide (CO2) sinks that, in parallel, release methane (CH4). The peatland carbon (C) balance depends on the interplay of decomposer and CH4-cycling microbes, vegetation, and environmental conditions. These interactions are susceptible to the changes that occur along a successional gradient from vascular plant-dominated systems to Sphagnum moss-dominated systems. Changes in the proton potential and the cellular energetics of Escherichia coli during growth by aerobic and anaerobic respiration or by fermentation.

The energetic parameters of Escherichia coli were analyzed for the aerobic/anaerobic transition. The electrochemical proton potential (delta p) across the cytoplasmic membrane was determined in the steady state of respiration with O2, nitrate, fumarate, dimethylsulfoxide (Me2SO), and for fermentation. With O2, a proton potential of -160 mV was obtained. For anaerobic respiration with nitrate, fumarate or Me2SO, delta p decreased only slightly by about 20 mV in contrast to earlier assumptions, whereas delta p dropped by approximately 40 mV during fermentation.
